Good Morning, it’s Friday, January 5, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Just days before the NATPE convention, another syndicated series bites the dust, and thereby opening up possible time periods for a new show. Twentieth Television will stop production on the syndicated weekday series Geraldo at Large in mid-January. But fear not for Geraldo, he has a multi-year deal with Fox New Channel, and At Large with Geraldo Rivera will air on Fox News Saturday and Sunday evenings, after the syndicated series ends. Geraldo at Large averaged a 0.7 A18-49 rating season-to-date. Roger Ailes attributes the cancellation to several factors, including “the soft ad marketplace, the lack of an early news lead-in for his show in several cities and the timeline for financial success” all leading to its early demise.
Tonight’s Premiere:
E!: Starveillance at 1030p
Tonight’s Finales:
BBC America: Hardware at 11p and Black Books at 1130p
MGM, in its first collaboration with New Line Television, will distribute two Comedy Central series, Reno 911! and Chappelle’s Show, and will also handle all national ad sales. Both shows will be available for U.S. syndication this fall. Comedy Central recently ordered up a 5th season of Reno 911!, and the show has been adapted into a feature film, titled RENO 911!: Miami, scheduled to be released next month. Comedy Central’s Chappelle’s Show began airing in January 2003, and in its second season it was the #1 show in its time period among M18-34.
Bravo’s Top Chef, with its original “Supersized” episode that aired Wednesday night at 10p, served up 2.2 million total viewers, 1.62 million A18-49 viewers (the network’s largest A18-49 audience to date) and 1.64 million A25-54 viewers. The two-part season finale of the culinary competition show is scheduled for January 24 and January 31.
TV Land will debut a new six-part half-hour series called TV Land Myths and Legends on January 10 at 10p. Each episode will explore mysteries and Hollywood myths of past TV series, stars, films and music using original interviews, archived footage and celebrity appearances. The series is produced by Gay Rosenthal Productions.
Aloha from MTV! The network will premiere a new reality drama series set in Hawaii called Maui Fever from Asylum Entertainment on January 17 at 1030p. The series follows the lives of seven young Maui locals who must juggle the constant flux of tourist turnover while maintaining stable lives for themselves in sunny paradise.
TV Guide Channel plans on covering the Award Season ’07 with as much spectacle as a major political election and it will offer its viewers news coverage and originals totaling more than 30 hours of programming. TV Guide’s Red Carpet shows that surround each Hollywood award show will include Live with Joan and Melissa, TV Watercooler, The 411, Watch This and The Fashion Team.
The New York Times Company has an agreement to sell its nine station group to Oak Hill Capital Partners for a total of $575 million, subject of course to the usual regulatory approval. The deal is expected to close by 2nd qtr 2007. The stations owned by New York Times company are WTKR/Norfolk, WHO/Des Moines, WREG/Memphis, WQAD/Moline, KFSM/Ft. Smith, Ark., WHNT/Huntsville, KFOR & KAUT/Oklahoma City, and WNEP/Scranton.
Fox Soccer Channel has made a change with its nightly sports news program as Fox Sports World Report becomes the Fox Soccer Report, starting January 8. Airing at 10p Monday through Sunday, the one-hour program will focus completely on soccer and feature hosts Jeremy St. Louis, Carlos Machado, Mitch Peacock, along with Max Bretos and Bobby McMahon. Fox Soccer Report is co-produced by Fox Soccer Channel and Global Television’s Fox Sports World Canada and is based at Global’s headquarters in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
WorldLink, a full-service media sales firm, has formed a new alliance with the Hispanic television network Azteca America, to be the exclusive direct response spot sales rep. WorldLink started its WorldLink en Español division eight years ago serving clients in the U.S. and Latin America in the area of Spanish-language DR sales.
Next New Networks is a new consumer media company that will launch micro TV networks on the web, each targeted to unique online communities with a range of both original and user-generated content. The company is expected to launch some time in the next couple of months. Ad-supported network content from Next New Networks will be available to download to iPods as well as other mobile devices. Heading up the company is former President/Nickelodeon Networks Group and Vice-Chairman/MTV Networks, Herb Scannell as CEO. Digital media venture capital firm Spark Capital has committed $8 million in funding for Next New Networks.
Transmitting video content and live TV to cellphones and other wireless devices has been challenging for cellular carriers and other technology companies. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, Samsung Electronics Co. claims to have the solution for video on the go: insert chipsets into cellphones so they pick up local TV stations, thus making them portable TV sets that would get the same reception as TVs with antennas. For this to work, local broadcasters would have to transmit separate beams to equipment embedded with a Samsung chipset. The channel line-up could be the same or broadcasters could tailor their own content for the portable devices. Even laptops, in-vehicle TV sets and digital video players could receive these signals with the proper chipset. Samsung has a number of issues to work out before this technology will be available to consumers, but if you’re at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week, Samsung will be demonstrating prototypes.
Just prior to the annual Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas, CBS Research unveiled new data indicating as viewers become more connected to digital media, they also increase their engagement in primetime television programming. The number of people with both a broadband and a digital television connection at home has increased to more than 30% since the fall of 2006, up from the 22% a year prior. The data says the more consumers are connected to digital media, the more likely they are to visit TV web sites and stream full episodes of TV shows online. Furthermore, the research revealed consumers are becoming more aware of the 2009 deadline for broadcasters to switch to full digital transmissions and the percentage of those who will invest in new digital TV sets has increased to 40%.
ABC‘s drama series What About Brian? has added to its regular cast with Tiffani Thiessen. Her role will be as the new boss at KC Gaming, says Hollywood Reporter. Thiessen was formerly on Beverly Hills 90210, as well as appearing in Two Guys and a Girl and Just Shoot Me, among others.
Rob Lowe‘s character on ABC‘s Brothers & Sisters will be hanging out for a while, at least thru to the end of the season, per Variety. Lowe played Senator Robert McCallister and love interest to Calista Flockhart’s character.
Casting Call: A new relationship show from the producers of The Surreal Life and My Fair Brady on VH1 is looking for girls who love to party and are ready to fall in love with a bona-fide rock star. Twenty girls will live in a Hollywood Hills mansion and vie for the attention and love of a famous lead singer of an 80’s/90’s rock band (who is remaining anonymous for now). For those chosen to be on the show, there will be some pay involved. To be considered, girls you must be 21 or older, email your photo, bio and contact information to Brenda Della Casa at [email protected]. Rock on!
Robert Sharenow has been elevated to SVP/Non-Fiction and Alternative Programming at A&E Network, where he reports to Bob DeBitetto, EVP/GM, A&E. In his new role, Robert will supervise the non-fiction programming and development groups and will be in charge of the development and creation of all non-fiction programming for the network.
Comcast Spotlight, the advertising sales arm of Comcast Cable, has added Adrienne Skinner as VP/Online Strategic Sales. In this new position, Adrienne will lead the burgeoning online sales business for the company.
The former MTV Networks Vice Chairman, Herb Scannell has taken the position of CEO at Next New Networks, a new media company that will facilitate video, web sites and content for various online-based communities all under the umbrella of Next New Networks. Scannell co-founded the company with a partner group, which includes: Fred Seibert, founder of Frederator Studios, former President, Hanna Barbara and MTV’s original Creative Director; Emil Rensing, initial member of AOL Greenhouse and creator VOD Cars podcast; Jed Simmons, former COO, Sundance Group and Sr. Exec. for Excite and Turner Broadcasting; Tim Shey, co-founder Proteus and producer of interactive and mobile media.
MTV Networks International has announced two new hires and one promotion in its Viacom Brand Solutions (VBS) Global division based in New York: Mark Jones has been added as VP to head large multiplatform marketing and advertising agreements with U.S.-based global clients; Samantha Maltin has also been hired as VP to develop global partnerships with U.S.-based firms across all Viacom brands; and Eva Hiltner has been upped to VP where she is responsible for VBS Global’s client service. All three executives will report to Marc Weinhouse, SVP, VBS Global.
