It’s official: Al Jazeera Media buys Current TV and will launch news network later this year Making it official, Al Jazeera Media Network announced yesterday it is launching a new US-based news channel that will offer domestic and international news for American audiences.  Al Jazeera Media Network additionally revealed it has acquired Current TV and the new US-based news channel will be available on Current’s distribution network.  There will be a transition period from existing programming until the new Al Jazeera channel launches later in 2013.  The new network will be based in New York City utilizing the existing Al Jazeera news bureaus in New York, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Miami and Chicago and will further open more bureaus in locations across the US.  The expansion of Al Jazeera will double the network’s US-based staff to more than 300 employees.  DLA Piper advised Al Jazeera Media Network in its acquisition of Current TV. 

~ MORE STUFF ~

A television history first: CBS’ Hawaii Five-O will let fans vote on the ending of an episode in real time via CBS.com or Twitter during the show’s East and West Coast broadcasts on Monday, January 14 at 10p.  The episode involves the team investigating a mysterious death of an O’ahu State University professor and his boss, his teaching assistant and a student who he caught cheating are all suspects.  After each suspect’s motive is revealed viewers will be directed to CBS.com or Twitter to choose either #theBoss, #theTA or #theStudent as the culprit.  The votes will be tallied immediately and the most popular ending will become part of the broadcast.  Separate voting will happen for East/Central and Pacific Time Zone broadcasts.  The three different endings will be available afterwards at CBS.com.  Hawaii Five-O is produced by CBS Television Studios. 

Fans of ABC’s Nashville, starring Connie Britton, Hayden Panettiere and Charles Esten can again watch the drama from season one as CMT will air all previously aired episodes back-to-back beginning this Sunday at 2p.  An all-new episode of Nashville will air January 9 at 10p on ABC.

IFC revealed the stars who will voice characters in the network’s new half-hour original animated series, Out There set to premiere February 22 at 1030p.  From creator Ryan Quincy (South Park), Out There chronicles the coming-of-age misadventures of socially awkward Chad and his brother Jay and their best friend Chris who all live in the small town of Holford.  Quincy will provide the voice of Chad with Kate Micucci as Jay and Justin Roiland as Chris.  Other celebrities voicing characters include Pamela Adlon as Chris’ single mother, Joanie; Fred Armisen as Joanie’s boyfriend, Terry; Linda Cardellini as Chad’s object of affection, Sharla; and John DiMaggio and Megan Mullally as Chad’s conservative parents, Wayne and Rose.  Out There is produced for IFC by 20th Century Fox Television.

National Geographic Channel introduces viewers to the people participating in Oklahoma’s Okie Hand Fishing Invitational in the new series Mudcats, debuting January 13 at 10p.  The series follows defending champ Scooter Bivins and his competitors as they scour brush piles and rock formations in hopes of locating a catfish hideout.  The 10-part series is produced by Original Media for the National Geographic Channel.

A seventh season is in store for DIY Network’s interactive home-building television series, Blog Cabin.  The series invites viewers and fans to design the 2013 Blog Cabin in hopes of winning the completed vacation home located on North Carolina’s Crystal Coast.  Blog Cabin premieres July 29 at 930p and online voting for the home’s renovation elements is now open through the spring at DIYNetwork.com/BlogCabinVote.  Upcoming online voting topics for cabin design features include: January 3-16: Inside and Out Features; January 17-30: Kitchen Features; January 31-February 13: Master Suite Features; February 14-27: Second Floor Family Room Features; February 28-March 13: First Floor Main Living Area Features; March 14-27: Outdoor Features; and April 4-May 17: Cabin Comforts.

TV One made some scheduling tweaks to its first quarter 2013 primetime lineup: season two of Find Our Missing produced by Towers Productions premieres January 9, then moves to its regular time of 9p on January 14; a sixth season of Unsung from A. Smith & Co. opens January 23 at 10p; and the series premiere of TV One’s new comedy Belle’s produced by Gallery Road Productions moves to February 1 at 10p.

Programming Note: Military Channel will air special encore presentations of two programs honoring the career of retired General Norman Schwarzkopf who passed away last week.  On January 8, the network will run Greatest Tank Battles: The Battle of 73 Easting at 8p followed by Inside the Killbox: Fighting the Gulf War at 9p.

Wayne Karrfalt, the original launch editor and daily contributing editor of Cynopsis Digital from March 2007 until July 2010, passed away peacefully and quietly on December 30 after a long battle with cancer.  As a veteran entertainment journalist, Wayne covered the television and technology fields within the industry for a variety of trade and consumer publications before Cynopsis Digital including Broadcasting & Cable, Multichannel News, TV Week, Ad Age and The New York Times. In the 1990s, Wayne lived in Tokyo, Japan and served as the Tokyo correspondent for The Hollywood Reporter and Variety Deal Memo, as well as being a theatre and arts critic for The Japan Times, abook reviewer for The Yomiuri Shimbun, a music writer for The Asahi Evening News and a film critic for Kinema Jumpo, the oldest film magazine in the world. Wayne is survived by his wife Hiroko Sato.

NBCUniversal and National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative (NRTC) forged an affiliation agreement that makes available NBCUniversal’s entire portfolio of broadcast and cable content to NRTC’s members.  The deal includes rights to carry the Olympics in addition to on-demand content from NBCUniversal’s cable and broadcast networks as well as access to live channels across multiple platforms in and out of the home.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis:  FOX topped Saturday night with a mere 0.8/2 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, FOX’s double Cops encore episodes won at an average of 1.0/4 followed by a tie between ABC’s Saturday Movie and TeleFutura’s Cineplex 3 at 0.6/2 each.  ABC’s Saturday Movie led during 9p with a 0.9/3 and Univision’s weekly Sabado Gigante was next at 0.7/2.  CBS then had a turn in the winner’s circle at 10p as a 48 Hours repeat delivered a 1.0/3 and ABC’s Saturday Movie trailed in second with a 0.9/3.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis:  As the regular NFL season came to a close Sunday NBC won the A18-49 viewers with an 8.8/24, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  NBC won the 7p hour with Football Night in America Part 2 at 1.6/5 followed by CBS’ 60 Minutes at 1.5/4.  NBC won at 8p with a combination of Football Night in America Part 3 and NBC Sunday Night Football at an average of 7.6/21 with FOX’s repeat comedies The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers delivering an average of 2.2/6.  NBC’s final Sunday Night Football match between Dallas and Washington was #1 through 9p at 10.2/27 and more animated repeat comedies on FOX came next as the average of Family Guy and American Dad posted a 1.6/5.  NBC’s Sunday Night Football ratings ticked up to a 10.7/28 during 10p and ABC’s Sunday Movie of the Week was a distant second at 0.9/2.

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis:  Univision rang in the New Year as a winner Tuesday by delivering a 1.7/4 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  Univision’s Por Ella Soy Eva did best at 8p with a 1.7/4 followed by a Shark Tank repeat on ABC at 1.5/4.  Univision held its top position through 9p with Amores Verdaderos at 1.9/5 while double Off Their Rockers reruns on NBC came next at an average of 1.7/4.  NBC traded places at 10p as Parenthood won with a 1.7/5 and Univision slid back to second place with Amor Bravio at 1.5/4.

Optimedia named Jason Hoffman to the newly-created position as SVP/Digital to oversee the agency’s New York Digital Operations encompassing Display, Search, Mobile, Video and Analytics.  Jason will report to Adam Seymour, Managing Director/Digital and will additionally work with communications planning and the broadcast teams to integrate digital media strategies for Optimedia’s clients including BBC, British Airways, Joe Fresh, Pizza Hut, Purina, Richemont and ServiceMaster.  Previously, Jason was with OMD where he was Head/US Digital Media and Strategy.
