Good morning, it’s Friday, January 28, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
Hulu is now considering transforming itself into a “virtual cable operator” offering live linear channels and VOD content to paying subscribers, according to an in-depth piece in the WSJ that cuts to the heart of many issues TV networks, the owners of Hulu, are facing as they balance the desire to develop new digital business with the need to protect their core businesses. Other Revelations include:
- New News Corp. President and COO Chase Carey, who worried that a whole new generation was being trained to find free TV online, was the impetus behind Hulu Plus
- Hulu CEO Jason Kilar threatened to leave the company if Hulu Plus didn’t lower its price from $10 to $5/mo.; a comprise was reached at $7.99/mo, equal to what Netflix charges for its streaming-only plan
- ABC, a late entry to the Hulu family, ruffled feathers when it launched its own full episode iPad app and is now working on developing its own digital subscription offering
- As Hulu begins negotiations to renew its content licenses, networks are considering requiring a two-week delay before new episodes can appear on the free Hulu service
MTV broke records streaming of full episodes of Jersey Shore on its website last week, attracting more than 1.6 million uniques and racking up 15 million streams in a single week, per Mediapost. The network has seen an increase of 32% in streaming volume this year over last, with Jersey Shore attracting 39% more uniques and 52% more streams.
Former Beverly Hills 90210 star Jason Priestly is participating in a Live Chat hosted on Hallmark Movie Channel‘s Facebook Page an hour before the original movie he stars in, “Goodnight for Justice,” premiers at 8 pm ET/PT on the channel. Livestream is powering the chat.
~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
Comcast is utilizing its on demand and xfinity.com platforms to work with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children to spread information about missing kids. Public service messages will featured on demand and online, with each video providing relevant details about individual children’s cases.
Telecommunications was the top vertical for mobile advertising in Dec. driven by carriers and device manufacturers that doubled their mobile buys doing the holiday season, according to as network Millennial Media‘s Dec. SMART report. Six verticals experienced triple-digit growth year-over-year, with Automotive growing by 623%, Retail & Restaurants growing by 572% and Entertainment up by 274%. Nearly half of mobile campaigns were designed to drive consumers to a website and another 16% were designed to drive app downloads.
Google made two more acquisitions this week. YouTube swallowed up social media site Fflick, a research service/recommendation engine that combs through Twitter tweets to determine how audiences are receiving new movie releases. Palo Alto-based SayNow builds voice-based social applications that allow users to send and receive voice messages to single or multiple users, integrated with popular social networking platforms and smartphone apps.
Time Warner Cable continued hemorrhaging basic video subscribers during Q4, even as it tested a lower-cost package to appeal to cost-cutting households in select markets. The company lost a net 141,000 video subscribers, but saw revenues increase 5.9% from Q4 of 2009 to $4.8 billion, partly from price increases, an uptick in DVR homes and the addition of 94k new internet customers.
Leading motion picture 3D technology provider RealD expanded its deal with Regal Entertainment, the U.S. largest theater chain, to double the exhibitor’s footprint of 3D screens from 1,500 to 3,000.
As promised, Netflix released a chart ranking the nation’s speediest ISPs as a way to point their customers in the direction of the best streaming video options. Charter Communications ranked as the top network averaging 2.667 kbps, followed by Comcast, Cox and Time Warner. 4G WiMax network Clearwire ranked dead last. Rogers leads in Canada with an impressive 3,020 kbps average.
Living Social’s hugely popular Amazon deal ($10 for a $20 gift certificate) helped the Groupon rival’s surge by 80% last week, according to Experian Hitwise. LivingSocial purchased the certificates from Amazon at an undisclosed cost (the company reportedly took a loss on the offer) and then resold them through its email service. Groupon’s traffic declined 20% during the same period.
Following up on the portable PSP and Nintendo’s game changing glasses-free 3DS, Sony unveiled a new handheld gaming device, codenamed the “NGP” (Next Generation Portable), equipped with a 5-inch LED touchscreen, front and rear-facing cameras and 3G network access. The device, due out by Q4 of 2011, will be capable of playing some PlayStation games that have been adapted for smartphone and tablet platforms including Android.
Showtime has adapted its mobile app for Android, enabling fans to get news on the network’s original series, movies, specials and sports programming. Users can check program schedules, review detailed episode guides, and watch full sample episodes. The network reports that its iPhone app has been downloaded over 600k times to date.
Here Media, publisher of LGBT-themed The Advocate and Advocate.com, has reached a deal with Thumb Media Group to distribute a free, ad-supported app for the magazine for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry. The app will feature web content in the categories of News, Entertainment, Features, Travel and Health, as well as video episodes of the news program “The Advocate,” which is currently repurposed for the NBC News Channel service.
TV Studios Global Entertainment hired former Viacom & Saban senior consumer products executive Jean-Philippe Randisi to serve as EVP & Director of Consumer Products, a newly created position. He reports to Maria Kyriacou, Managing Director, ITV Studios Global Entertainment.
CNN.com tapped Amy Cox, writer of the site’s Afghanistan Crossroads blog, as World Editor, one of 4 new positions announced. Amar Bakshi will also serve as the site’s new World Producer; Krisi Keck Ramsey will take over the role of Weekend Editor; and Dan Gilgoff has been upped to Religion Editor on CNN.com’s enterprise reporting team.

Facebook has developed another ingenious way for marketers to lift their brand above the clutter with the launch of “Sponsored Stories,” which essentially takes a post you make by “checking in” or “Liking” a product in your news feed and places in the right hand column of your friends’ pages. Marketers will bid for the privilege, with rates varying depending upon how far reaching their effort is. The idea is that seeing brands being utilized by your friends is much more powerful than a direct pitch. (This video from Facebook Marketing Solutions explains how it works, promising huge lifts in ad recall and likeliness to recommend a product.) As creepy as this may sound, the social networking site is on to something here – marketing is perhaps most effective at reaching young web-savvy viewers when it doesn’t appear to be marketing at all. But again, the site opens up itself up to another backlash as, per usual with its new privacy-eroding features, you can’t opt out.
Clarification: Showtime is not involved with Createasphere’s Saturday webcast, part of series which includes Q&A’s with the creators of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, FX’s Sons of Anarchy and Fox’s Glee.
