Good morning, it’s Friday, January 25, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

After offering just a smattering of videos to Verizon’s VCast service and to browser compatible phones via m.youtube.com, YouTube has now optimized a vast majority of its videos for the mobile space. The WAP-based site has also been revamped to include more personalization and community features, allowing users to subscribe to channels and upload videos directly from their handsets. The service still requires a 3G network and is quite data intensive – meaning it could cost an arm and a leg depending on the data plan you’re saddled with.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Video entertainment site Veoh.com and horror-themed Fear.net announced a content and ad revenue sharing deal, giving Veoh.com’s 23 million monthly users access to its original and acquired content. Veoh will launch a branded channel featuring frightening Sony Pictures Television and Lionsgate titles, the studios launched FearNet with Comcast a year ago last Halloween.
 
The Weather Channel launched a new mobile website featuring new interactive maps, current ski conditions, pollen counts and boat and beach information. Weather Channel Mobile is one of the top five mobile internet sites on the web, according to Nielsen Mobile, averaging more than 6 million unique monthly users.
 
NHL.com will stream the 2008 NHL All Star Game live for the first time this year, courtesy of Cisco, and feature more than 20 webcasts leading up to and following the event. Additional coverage includes dressing room interviews as well as pre- and post-game analysis.
 
MTV Network’s Logo launched a selection of Gay themed video blogs available on its family of websites including LOGOonline.com, AfterEllen.com, AfterElton.com, VisibleVote08.com and NewNowNext.com. There’s a little bit of everything here – politics, fashion, gaming, technology and of course Two Gay Guys “Passing Judgment” on the latest films and TV shows.
 
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
The granddaddy of interactive serial dramas lonelygirl 15 wraps its second season today with a four-part cliffhanger. The lead up included a live event held earlier this week in San Francisco that invited fans to become extras in the drama and even post their own videos of the action. Expect new twists, turns, character deaths and interactive elements in season 3, to premiere immediately following the season 2 finale.
 
Banking on the adage that a picture is worth a thousand words, Tampa, FL.-based Redzee.com introduced a new visual search engine that replaces all text results with pictures. The system still utilizes text-based search tools to scan metadata tags embedded within web pages, but screen grabs of the web pages are displayed instead of the text snippets.
 
Metacafe integrated its video content with European mobile social platform Nareos and U.S. & Spanish mobile entertainment aggregator Zed, allowing supported users to stream or download selected videos to their handsets.
 
Outside.in announced a partnership with Washingtonpost.com to provide a “ buzz map” of the DC area. The interactive map highlights places being written about by both local bloggers and Post reporters.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Following suit with Apple TV, Vudu slashed the price of its broadband connected movie set-top by $100 to $295. (But that’s still $60 more than the Apple box.)
 
Gemstar-TV Guide
filed a lawsuit against Virgin Media in the UK, claiming three of its European IPG patents were infringed upon in Virgin set tops.


~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Norton security software maker Symantec signed on to become the first advertiser to utilize Tivo‘s interactive tags and product placements. The ads will be embedded in TivoCast broadcasts of CNET‘s weekly technology show; CNET viewers can use the Tivo remote’s “thumbs-up” button to request more info. about Norton products.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~
 

International online and mobile digital music accounted for $2.9 billion in sales worldwide in 2007, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), an increase from $2.1 billion in 2006. Digital sales represented 15% of total industry sales, which were down another 10% from a year ago to $17.6 billion as CD sales continued to drop. Digital album sales totaled 50 million in the U.S., up 54%, accounting for 10% of the U.S. album market. The best selling digital album was Maroon 5’s It Wont Be Soon Before Long, selling 252,000 units.
 
Nielsen launched NORA, its Nielsen On Demand Reporting & Analytics service, aggregating anonymous VOD usage based on real time transactions collected from set tops. The new web-based tool will also provide integrated data sets from other Nielsen measurement services including Nielsen EDI and Nielsen VideoScan. Comcast set tops will be proving data for NORA.
 
The “Top Friends” widget ranked the highest in engagement among Facebook users, according to comScore’s Nov. 2007 Widget Metrix report, while MySpace.com accumulated the largest web viewing audience.

Former Corporate VP at Time Warner Cable Bruce Haymes joined Nielsen Co. to lead the new Nielsen Digital Media Manager service, established to monitor profits from digital distribution of traditional media.
 
Online and VOD kids entertainment service Kabillion named Rebecca Agbe-Davies as Director of Programming and Development. She will be part of Kabillion’s first contingent to NATPE next week.
