Cynopsis: DIGITAL
01.18.13
Good morning. It’s Friday, January 18, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Google/YouTube is close to purchasing a minority stake in VEVO, according to a report from AllThingsD. Though the deal isn’t finalized, the report states that if it goes through, the dollar amount will be more than the $35 million Google invested in Machinima last year. There’s also a new distribution deal on the table, which includes long-term licenses for VEVO’s library of music video content. VEVO is currently the biggest video content provider/network on YouTube, or at least was last month. comScore’s Video Metrix rankings from earlier this week ranked VEVO as the top YouTube partner channel (in terms of unique viewers) for December 2012, ahead of competitor Warner Music.
CBS‘s plan for Barack Obama’s second inauguration includes live, on-site coverage on Monday, January 21, beginning at 7am ET. On the digital front, the network says it will simulcast CBS’s broadcast coverage of Inauguration Day on CBSNews.com, which will be led by CBS Evening News Anchor and Managing Editor Scott Pelley from 10am to 4pm ET. He will also lead CBS News’ coverage of the official swearing in of President Obama, which is scheduled for Sunday, January 20. Along with the live stream, CBSNews.com will feature a bunch of additional content, including interactive slide shows and analysis of Obama’s first term as well as what’s ahead in his second term.
Actor/comedian Chris Hardwick has been tapped to host the Third Annual Streamy Awards, a co-production from Dick Clark Productions and Tubefilter that looks to honor the best in original online video programming. Hardwick is the creator of The Nerdist, a “nerd culture” brand that spans a podcast, website, BBC America TV series, and an original channel on YouTube. Hardwick is also the host of AMC’s live after-show Talking Dead, which follows the network’s hit zombie drama The Walking Dead. The Third Annual Streamy Awards, presented by Coca-Cola, will take place on February 17, live from the Hollywood Palladium. A live stream will be available for those who are unable to attend.
Streamworks International will live stream the DLD13 (Digital – Life – Design) conference, which has been described to me as Europe’s version of TED. From January 20 through January 22, Streamworks will air 15 hours of live coverage every day from Munich, Germany. Coverage will feature sessions on e-commerce, digital security/privacy, education/social issues, future of entertainment, innovation, digital media, science, and culture. It will also include presentations from speakers such as Arthur Sulzberger, Chairman and Publisher of The New York Times; Peter Thiel, Partner at Founders Fund and the Co-Founder of PayPal; and software security expert Eugene Kaspersky. The live stream will be available here and here starting at 2pm on January 20.
Rich mobile media ad and analytics start-up Celtra has raised $4 million in new financing led by SoftBank Capital. The Boston-based start-up says it will use the funds to expand its engineering presence in the US by bringing product development operations to San Francisco, as well as explore new business opportunities in Japan. Per the deal, SoftBank’s Managing Partner, Ron Fisher, will join Celtra’s Board of Directors. Existing investors GrandBanks Capital and Fairhaven Capital also participated in this round. Celtra’s AdCreator 3 product, which can be used for building, managing, and tracking rich media mobile ads, currently serves agencies, publishers, and ad networks in over 18 countries.
OpenX Software, a provider of online and mobile ad technology, has landed $22.5 million in Series E financing, led by new investor Samsung Venture Investment Corp. Existing investors Accel Partners, Index Ventures, SAP Ventures, Mitsui & Co. Global Investment, and Presidio Ventures also participated in the round. To date, OpenX has raised over $70 million in total. The start-up says it mark the new capital toward growth, financing additional acquisitions, and international expansion.
Video software firm Levels Beyond has received $4.5 million in Series A funding from TVC Capital. Levels Beyond provides video content producers with media management, distribution, optimization, and monetization services. It says it will direct the new funds toward expanding sales, marketing, and business development. Though not naming any names, the start-up says clients of its Reach Engine software include two of the top five MSOs, two of the top five sports leagues, and two of the largest programming networks in the US. As part of TVC’s investment, Jeb Spencer, the growth equity firm’s Founder and Managing Partner, will join the start-up’s Board of Directors.

Collective has launched a new product called TVA Channels, which aims to help advertisers retarget TV viewers online. It’s built on top of Collective’s TV Accelerator (TVA) solution, which is designed to help advertisers target specific audiences that have seen or missed TV ads. Collective says TVA Channels allows advertisers to target “high-demand viewers,” as in audiences of top TV shows like American Idol, The Big Bang Theory, and NCIS, as well as those who watch major live events like the Super Bowl, the Oscars, and the Grammys. It’s a way to help marketers enhance their TV ad campaigns by finding and reaching those audiences online before, during, or after their favorite shows. In addition to buying audiences of TV shows and events, TVA Channels also allows advertisers to reach audiences based on show genre, day part, and behavioral segments, according to the company. To pull this off, Collective links its TV audience data, which comes from 13 million STB households in the US, with its Audience Cloud of 200 million active online consumers.
Influencer marketing platform Style Coalition has launched the SCX Influencer Exchange in beta. It’s an automated, subscription-based solution designed to help agencies and brands find, connect with, and manage online influencers and bloggers, as well as analyze data and measure ROI for their marketing campaigns. Style Coalition’s lifestyle network consists of 50 fashion, beauty, and home decor bloggers with a combined reach of over 5 million monthly unique visitors. With the launch of SCX, Style Coalition is also looking to expand into additional content categories, including men’s fashion, food, travel, health, and fitness. The company says it vets every blogger before inviting them to SCX. At the base of SCX is Style’s SC Index score, which evaluates a blogger/influencer’s overall media reach.
Smartphones will account for 50% of all handset shipments by 2014, according to the latest market forecast from ABI Research. By 2018, ABI predicts that smartphones will account for 69% of all handset shipments, with LTE-based handsets representing 35% of all handset shipments and 50% of all smartphone shipments. “Barring an unlikely collapse in Samsung’s business, even Apple will be chasing Samsung’s technology, software, and device leadership in 2013 through the foreseeable future,” says ABI Research’s Senior Analyst Michael Morgan. ABI credits this forecast to Samsung’s growth in the smartphone market over the past couple of years. Since 2010, ABI says Samsung has grown its smartphone market share from 8% to 30% in 2012. It expects Apple’s market share to peak in 2013 at 22% and then remain flat through 2018.

PointRoll, a digital marketing technology company owed by Gannett, has made five new VP promotions across its senior management team: Todd Pasternack has been named VP/Digital Innovation. He will be responsible for developing and fostering next-generation ad tech products and ideas, as well as for “driving innovation through the exploration of emerging technologies in ways that influence products, solutions, and the marketplace overall.” Cristina Westwood has been promoted to VP/Operations. She will help lead the strategic direction, talent management, and client-focused initiatives for PointRoll’s campaign services organization. Then there’s George Thomas, who has been promoted to VP/Product Management. He will continue to manage product definition, product pipeline, and product priorities. Shannon Thompson has been named VP/Publisher Sales. In her new role, she will focus on revenue growth for PointRoll’s publisher partners through the development of customized rich media experiences and other innovative ways to monetize their inventory. And last but not least, we have Tonya Jones, who has been appointed to VP/Finance. While she will continue to manage finance, the company says her promotion signals a larger role in which she will be called on to advise and guide the leadership team on all financial planning items, pro forma modeling, and overseeing the budget.
Tony Dunaif has joined iN DEMAND as its new SVP/Digital Products. In the new role, Dunaif will manage the company’s digital initiatives tied to multiplatform transactional content. He will also lead the development of new products and services. He is based in NY — Brooklyn, to be specific.
Digital promotion platform Ifeelgoods has named Dali Kilani as its new VP/Engineering. In the role, Kilani will be responsible for scaling Ifeelgoods’ platform to “support millions of concurrent users.” He comes from Zynga, where he held a range of senior technology positions including Director/Engineering. At Zynga he oversaw the infrastructure behind apps like Farmville, which at its peak had over 34 million daily active users.
