Ever since lonelyGirl15 proved that we’d watch Web video, programmers have been striving and failing to create a breakout digital hit. But the 24 star is now fronting The Confession, an online video series launching in March that stars Sutherland as a hit man confessing to a priest, played by John Hurt. The online video production firm and ad network DBG is creating the 10-episode series. An advertiser is not attached yet. The show will run on Hulu, across the DBG network and on DBG’s Facebook hub. DBG tells Cynopsis it’s having talk with other properties for ancillary distribution. DBG reaches 90 million uniques in the United States across its network of 2600 sites. VH1.com plans to live stream its 16th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Red Carpet Pre-Show at CriticsChoice.VH1.com tonight at 8 p.m. ET before the on-air telecast. During the telecast itself, Web viewers can check out the live viewing party online featuring interviews and backstage footage as well as red-carpet streaming. To honor the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s presidency, Comcast and the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum are launching a video-on-demand series today that includes speeches, newsreels, campaign commercials, documentaries and films. In honor of the 15th Winter X Games at the end of this month, ESPN plans to carry “dozens” of hours of live coverage on ESPN3.com and ESPN Mobile TV to give fans more multimedia access to the sporting event. PBS‘s four-part NOVA series NOVA’s Making Stuff with David Pogue is now offering a sneak peek of the first full-length episode a week in advance on the iPad, iPhone and iTouch via PBS’ new app. Additional episodes will be made app-available the day after broadcast. David Pogue is the renowned tech columnist from the New York Times and the show premieres on-air on January 19. Got a great idea for a business? The 2011 We Media PitchIt Challenge is offering $50,000 in seed funding to launch two “innovative media and tech startups.” The deadline is February 4 to enter and finalists will pitch their ideas to judges and attendees at the We Media conference in NY on April 6. ~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
Online video programmer Clevver Media paired up with media company Alloy Media + Marketing in a deal that calls for Alloy to handle all ad sales and promotions across Clevver’s teen entertainment properties. The partnership expands Alloy’s reach and gives Clevver access to Alloy’s marketing clout. On YouTube, ClevverTV delivers about 30 million views per month. Digital media advertising entity Cox Digital Solutions acquired the business and ad sales group of Internet Broadcasting. Cox provides services for national, regional and local ad agencies and publishers and said it was attracted to IB for its relationships with publishers and its media sales experience. Social commerce site LivingSocial acquired a majority stake in Groupon-like European shopping site LetsBonus to bolster its international presence. LivingSocial reaches more than 16 million subscribers in more than 170 markets. ~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~
Microsoft’s Bing saw a 5% increase in searches last month, said Experian Hitwise. Bing powered nearly 26% of all searches for the month of December, while Google snagged the lion’s share of about 70%. Yet another research report finds Android-powered phones pulling ahead of Apple. Mobile ad network Millenial Media reports in its monthly update that the Android operating system has surpassed Apple’s iOs with an 8% month over month increase in Millenial Media’s network. Android ad requests grew 141% from the third quarter to the fourth quarter, Millenial said. CBSSports.com-owned high school sports site MaxPreps.com introduced a mobile stat tracker for high school basketball that lets user follow real-time basketball stats on their iPad or other devices. MaxPreps said it will build more apps for other high school sports. NBC Universal-owned iVillage.com launched a celebrity fantasy league game tied into the upcoming Golden Globes and Academy Awards. Dubbed the iVillage Fantasy Celebrity League Game, the social game lets users draft dream teams of celebs, in much the same way fantasy sports leagues operate. Media agency Initiative promoted its digital expert Michael Hayes to the newly created post of President of Initiative Digital where he’ll oversee all digital strategy and operations in an expanded role that now includes worldwide global accounts. The agency also hired David Goodrich as EVP and Director of Digital. He most recently served as SVP and Director of Digital Communications at UM. Targeted TV ad company Simulmedia hired Jack Smith for the new post of Chief Product Officer. His task is to help scale Simulmedia’s TV ad targeting platforms that marry TV audience research with anonymous viewing data from 15 million set-top boxes in the United States. Forbes Media hired Jorge Consuegra as Chief Marketing Officer, a new role in which he’ll be tasked with leading the well-known news brand through a time of digital transition. Let’s enjoy a piece of birthday cake for the site nearly all of us rely on for research because Wikipedia is celebrating its tenth birthday on Saturday January 15. According to Pew Internet & American Life Project, the percentage of adult Americans who look up information on the site rose to 42% in May 2010, up from 25% in February 2007, representing more than half of adult Internet users in the U.S. Interestingly, 69% of Wikipedia users have at least a college degree.
