The U.S. market for PC shipments had its second-worst year ever in 2011, dropping 5% (75 to 71.3 million) from 2011, according to the latest data from IDC. The report attributes the decline in the market to weak demand, a difficult competitive landscape and the shortage of hard disk drives (HDD) in 4Q 2011. The lone exception was Apple, which saw an 18% jump in Mac sales in 4Q 2011 year-over-year. While the global market did not suffer a drop, it did slow down due to similar technological and competitive constraints. In fact, IDC expects the global market to slow down even more in the first quarter of 2012 due to the HDD supply shortage. However, it’s not all bad news as IDC forecasts the global market to eventually recover and grow more than 15% in the fourth quarter of 2012. In fact, it currently projects worldwide annual shipments in 2012 to hit 371 million, which would be a 5.4% increase over 2011.


Microsoft is shelving discussions it has had with media companies over the last year in regards to potentially launching an over-the-top TV subscription service, reports Reuters. Ideally, Microsoft had hoped to launch it in the coming months. However, per the sources cited in the report, that is now on hold as Microsoft believes licensing costs for such a service are currently too high. The company’s sought to offer current shows and live-TV channels (along with on-demand content) on its service, which would have proved to be a direct competitor to TV packages from cable and satellite service providers.

In a deal reminiscent of its streaming agreement with Microsoft for the Xbox 360, Verizon Communications will stream over 10,000 video-on-demand titles, as well as 26 live HDTV channels to owners of LG Electronics’ connected TVs and Blu-ray players. Among the live HD channels to be offered as part of this agreement include Nickelodeon, HBO, Cinemax, MTV, TNT, TBS and more. The VOD content will be available through the company’s Flex View TV Everywhere platform. The streaming service will be delivered via the Verizon FiOS TV app for LG connected devices and will not require a set-top box. The service is expected to be launched in the first half of 2012. As an interesting side note, LG’s connected TVs are compatible with the company’s Magic Remote, which offers a gesture-, text-, point-and-click-, and in some cases, voice-based browsing experience.

Bright House Networks will offer out-of-home wireless services to its broadband customers in Florida, for no extra charge, reports Multichannel News. The MSO has set up more than 2,000 Wi-Fi hotspots in the state, and hopes to add over 2,000 more by the end of 2012. The network is available to every Bright House Road Runner subscriber; non-subscribers will be charged a fee to access the operator’s Wi-Fi service.

All of comedy website Funny Or Die’s original content is now available on the latest version of Google TV, which launched last October, through its new Google TV Spotlight App. The humor website attracts more than 12 million unique visitors per month, generating over 60 million video views.


eMarketer predicts revenues from ad-supported mobile music, games and videos will grow 52.7% in 2012 to $433.8 million, a year after jumping 81.9% in 2011. By 2015, the forecast says revenues from ad-supported mobile content will surpass $1 billion. As a matter of fact, by 2015, eMarketer indicates that 30% of all revenue from ad-supported mobile content will come from ads. As a point of comparison, that number was less than 20% in 2011. The reason for such positive predicted growth is both the increasing number of people who own phones capable of hosting high-quality mobile content and existing mobile formats looking more toward ads as a source for funding.


Microsoft and LG Electronics have come to a patent agreement, covering LG devices, including tablets and smartphones, powered by the Android or the Chrome operating system. “Together with our 10 previous agreements with Android and Chrome OS device manufacturers, including HTC, Samsung and Acer, this agreement with LG means that more than 70% of all Android smartphones sold in the U.S. are now receiving coverage under Microsoft’s patent portfolio,” said Horacio Gutierrez, corporate VP and deputy general counsel, Intellectual Property Group, Microsoft, in a statement. Specific terms of the deal were not disclosed.


After nipping at its heels in November, Microsoft’s Bing finally eclipsed Yahoo! in the U.S. online search market in December 2011. In the last month of 2011, Bing carved up a 15.1% share of the Explicit Core Search market, jumping just 0.1% from the previous month. Meanwhile, Yahoo! fell from 15.1% in November to 14.5% in December. Google, of course, stood dominant at the top, raising its share from 65.4% to 65.9% between the two months. Explicit Core Search excludes contextually driven searches where the user has no intent to interact with the search results page.

eBay is also putting its hat in the 2012 mobile commerce prediction game. At a CES event in Las Vegas, eBay CEO John Donahoe predicted that mobile commerce will reach $8 billion in merchandise sales in 2012, which would be a 60% increase over 2011, reports AllThingsD. It’s a good outlook for a company that has achieved over 65 million downloads of its mobile app, and saw over 890,000 new eBay users in 2011 make their first eBay purchase through the company’s mobile app (a 113% increase over 2010).

E! Online reports having its best year ever in terms of web traffic. The entertainment news website averaged nearly 11 million unique monthly visitors (excluding mobile); achieved a total of almost 2 billion page views over the whole year; and witnessed 700 million video starts across the web, according to numbers from Omniture Site Catalyst. The good news extends to the mobile platform as the site’s mobile properties ended 2011 with a combined average of 7 million monthly mobile visitors and 145 million total mobile page views in December alone.
