Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, January 12, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Best known as an Executive Producer of reality TV shows, Mark Burnett will serve as Executive Producer of the 16th Annual 2007 MTV Movie Awards, which will air live for the first time on Sunday, June 3, 2007.  On the MTV side, as she has for the past 10-years, Sally Frattini will continue as an Executive Producer of the special.  Previously Burnett and Frattini worked together on Burnett’s MTV 1990s series Eco-Challenge.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney Channel programming highlights:

  • The spring the preschool block Playhouse Disney, will get a new look and two new hosts, Ooh and Aah, two monkey puppets.
  • The network has also picked up a second season of the animated Playhouse Disney series Handy Manny (weekdays at 9a, weekends 10:30a).
  • Season four of Kim Possible will bow on the network with a mini-marathon, February 10, 8-10a.
  • What will happen in the next chapter of the TV movie High School Musical?  The network is asking fans to put their fingerprints on select story elements for the sequel, High School Musical 2, by going online and taking the new 10 question poll, High School Musical: Play Your Part, beginning today January 12 through 31, 2007.  Through the questions viewers will help choose a number of elements such as, what sayings will be on Chad’s t-shirts, what is written on Mrs. Darbus’ chalkboard, and what kind of sandwich Zeke takes on his picnic.  Set to being filming this spring, High School Musical 2 will bow on Disney Channel in August 2007 and not long after on its channels around the world.   • Heading into production this month in New Zealand is, Johnny Kapahala: Back on Board the sequel to the TV movie Johnny Tsunami.

As part of a multi-year programming and marketing partnership with The Recording Academy, XM satellite radio will launch Grammy Radio.  Available on XM Live (XM 200) from February 9  11, Grammy Radio will provide coverage of Grammy Week events, including a live broadcast of this year’s pre-telecast Grammy’s, arrival interviews, and performances from Grammy Week events and every nominated song and artist.  The 49th Annual Grammy Awards will be broadcast live on CBS, February 11, 2007, 8-11:30p.

Das Vierte, NBC Universal Global Networks’ German free-TV channel, will launch a new weekday kids programming block, from February 12, 2007, 6-9a.  Targeted to kids/tweens 3-13, the block will feature shows from Your Family Entertainment AG’s (YFE) library including, Timmy Goes to School, Marvin, Tap-dancing Horse, Rotten Ralph, Turtle Island, Rescue Heroes and Adventures of Papyrus. 

In other YFE news, the company has also completed license deals for two of its other series:

  • KI.KA, the ARD/ZDF kid’s channel, has picked up all 26 episodes of Gloria’s House, which it plans to begin airing this year
  • Junior.TV, a pay-TV channel, has acquired the rights to the first season of Dragon Hunters, in a deal that also includes the shows Fix & Foxi, Gnarfs and Generation O!  Produced by Futurikon, the French animation studio/production company, Dragon Hunters will be broadcast on the Premiere platform.

Foothill Entertainment picked up the global TV and home entertainment distribution rights to Hip-Hop Kidz: It’s a Beautiful Thing.  Released straight to DVD, the movie is based on the real-life Hip-Hop Kidz dance group’s drive to produce a video in two weeks for a competition.  The program is exec produced by Mark Bacino and Jim Green.  The film’s DVD was just released in October by Genius Products in addition a soundtrack CD.  Other merchandising and outreach events are in Foothill’s plans for the brand.

BKN International has inked a DVD distribution deal and a broadcast agreement for a number of its properties in Canada.

  • Tele-Quebec, a free-TV broadcaster, has picked six BKN’s CGI HD animated features (6×48′): A Christmas Carol: Scrooge’s Ghostly Tale; Robin Hood: Quest for the King; Jungle Book: Rikki-Tikki-Tavi to the Rescue; The Prince and the Pauper: Double Trouble; Alice in Wonderland: What’s the Matter with Hatter; The Three Musketeers: Saving the Crown.
  • Morningstar Entertainment Inc., a home entertainment distributor, has licensed a group of 14 titles from BKN for distribution across Canada.  Titles included under the pact are: Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves: The Lost Scimitar of Arabia (1×72′); Kong  Return to the Jungle (1×80′); Legend of the Dragon Volumes 1-3 (each 13×24′); Kong: The Animated Series Volume 1 (14×24′) and Volumes 2 & 3 (each 13×24′); as well as BKN’s CGI HD animated movies (6×48′) mentioned above.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Incap Furniture Ltd. has entered into a multi-year deal with LEGO.  According to the agreement Incap has the exclusive rights to market, sell and manufacture kid’s LEGO furniture under the LEGO Playroom banner.

If you are travelling to Las Vegas for the NATPE 2007 convention next week, the average high temperatures for next week are in the low 30’s, with a chance of snow showers. Temperatures only begin to warm up by Wednesday and Thursday when the high’s get into the low 40’s.  Evening temperatures can dip as low as single digits … so don’t leave your winter coat at home this year!  Safe travels!


EXECUTIVE MOVES

Two MTV Networks senior executives, Michael Wolf, President and COO, MTV Networks and Nicole Browning, President/Affiliate Sales and Marketing, to step down from their positions.  Wolf will exit the company next month, having served for just over a year in his positions. With more than two decades working within the MTVN family, the buzz around 1515 Broadway has been that Browning’s exit has been in the works for many months now. While MTVN says that Wolf and Browning will be replaced, there is no word as of yet who might fill those roles.

Christine Davis has been named in-house producer for Cookie Jar Entertainment. She will be based at Cookie Jar’s Toronto offices, Davis will report to Pamela Slavin, VP/Production.  Davis will produce new series the company.  Prior to this Davis was Head of Animation, New Media Marketing and Design, Sullivan Entertainment Inc.  She has served as a producer on a range of projects including Little People, The Wrong Coast, Anne; Journey to Green Gables, Anne of Green Gables, and Sesame Stories.

Michael Ghosh has been upped to Director/Advertising Sales, Jetix UK.  He will report to Managing Director, Boel Ferguson.  In his new position Ghosh will head Jetix UK’s commercial sales division, which includes overseeing airtime sales, online and sales promotions revenues.  He will also work with Jetix Europe’s Commercials Sales Unit.  Prior to this Ghosh was an Account Manager for Jetix UK.

PBS has named Andrew Russell as SVP/PBS Ventures as of February, planning and directing revenue-generating activities for PBS’ content and distribution to support the mission of public broadcasting.  He will oversee partnerships, program video sales, corporate underwriting and on-line sponsorship, Shop PBS, licensing and merchandising.  Andrew will report to COO, Wayne Godwin.
