Good morning, it’s Friday, January 11, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing, coming to you from the CES convention in Las Vegas.

For a company that doesn’t have an official presence at CES, it’s startling how much buzz Apple is generating at the show. The latest speculation is that Warner Bros. will be among the studios jumping on board the iTunes movie rental model Apple is set to announce next week at MacWorld, joining Fox, Paramount, Disney and LionsGate. Titles are expected to cost $3.99 for 24 hours, according to unnamed sources from Bloomberg, viewable on computers, iPods and large screen TVs via the slow-selling Apple TV (which should get quite a boost from the service.) Meanwhile the rumor that Apple is ready to unveil to a Yellow Submarine version of the iPod, preloaded with the entire Beatles catalogue, has resurfaced once again.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
MySpace launched a Celebrity channel to showcase videos, photos, blogs and profiles of more than 300 famous athletes, actors, musicians and socialites. The idea is to give stars, long fodder for cruel gossip sites all over the web, a more controlled environment in which to interact with fans.
 
News 12 Networks launched a new mobile content service delivering local news, traffic and weather information to local Cablevision subscribers in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Basic and web-enabled handset users can register for the service at news12.com by entering their Optimum user ID and password.
 
TBS.com is conducting a live Q&A webcast following the second season premiere of late-night comedy 10 Items or Less on Jan. 15. The cast will answer questions about what it’s like working on the show, what it takes to be an improvisational actor and what fans can expect during the series’ second season.
 
WSJ.com began the transition from a subscription based to an ad-supported website, offering free access to all editorials and embedding free video clips from NewsCorp.’s Fox News Channel.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
The Phonecasting exhibit at the Sands Convention Center was popular among podcasters this year. Kingwood, Texas-based Phonecasting provides a free ad-supported service allowing users to create and upload voice and video podcasts from a mobile handset or landline. Devotees can then listen to the podcasts via iTunes or from their mobile device. Fox News and CBC television are among the mainstream programmers using the service.
 
Podcasting network Wizzard Media reported distributing 1 billion downloads in 2007 and delivering 10 million ad insertion during Q4.
 
Vimation contracted with Retirement Living TV to design an interactive video site for its website www.rl.tv.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Panasonic
, (which changed its name from Matsushita in its home country of Japan this week) completed an integration with YouTube and Picasa to allow videos and photos to be viewed on Panasonic plasma TVs. The VIERA PZ850 line of broadband-connected HDTVs will launch 2Q of 2008, equipped with an internal processor that improves the grainy appearance of the user generated videos. Sony has similar content deals in place with AOL, Yahoo, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony BMG Music for its Bravia line of internet connected TVs.
 
Meanwhile LG Electronics announced a partnership with Netflix enabling its subscribers to stream movies directly to LG HDTVs through a broadband-connected set top box, due out in the second half of 2008. Netflix is now offering about 6,000 DVD titles on its online rental service.
 
Universal is backing out of its agreement to support HD DVD exclusively, according to Variety, though they are not abandoning the format completely. Paramount and Toshiba have denied that HD DVD is finished, despite Warner Bros.’ decision to back Blu-ray exclusively. 
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
More than a third of mobile phone users in the U.S. (78 million) recalled seeing or hearing advertising on their mobile phones in the last quarter of 2007, according to a new report from Limbo, produced by GFK/NOP Research.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
CNET‘s expert tech editors awarded the Philips 42″ Eco TV its Best in Show award and the Motorola Rokr E8 mobile phone with the People’s Voice Awards at CES. Phillips Eco TV uses far less power than traditional sets by dimming its backlight in response to program material. The new Rokr features a touchpad interface that changes depending on how the handset is being used. The EchoStar TR-50 cordless HD DVR won in the home video category.
 
Traffic to video sharing sites continues to climb, according to a new phone study from The Pew Internet Life project. Nearly half of all internet users say they have been to a video sharing site like YouTube, compared to a third in Dec. 2006. Another 15% of respondents say they used one “yesterday,” meaning the day before they were surveyed. Some 54% of American adults now have a high-speed connection at home, compared to 45% at the same time last year. 
 
BIA Financial Network reported 2007 television revenues as $22.2 billion, a 2% decrease from revenues of $22.7 billion in 2006. A total of 294 stations were sold for an estimated $4.6 billion, compared with 202 sold in 2006 for a price of $18.1 billion (in large part to the sale of Univision and four NBC stations). BIA is predicting 11% Growth in TV stations revenue in 2008 due to strong political spending in close-race DMA markets.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Online syndication network Voxant appointed Marcien Jenckes as its new CEO. Marcien was most recently SVP/Messaging Community at AOL, working with the ICQ and AIM brands.
 
Microsoft hired former COO of networking equipment maker Juniper Networks Stephen Elop as President of its Business Division, which oversees the Office software suite. He also served as President and CEO of Flash creator Macromedia before Adobe bought it in 2005.
 
Christine Luzano was named VP/Sales and Marketing, Americas for interactive mobile and services provider conVISUAL. She will be based in New York and Chicago.

Another terrific gadget oriented site offering exhaustive coverage of CES is Gizmodo.com, whose tagline reads, “so much in love with shiny new toys, it’s unnatural.” There are plenty of cool devices profiled and snarky commentary on the show, including the hilarious “ Ten Reasons We’re Doomed: CES Edition” posting.
