2/09/07

Good Morning, it’s  Friday, February 9, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

The Fox Business Channel will become a reality as the latest News Corp. venture will officially launch in fourth quarter 2007. Headed by Fox News Chairman/CEO Roger Ailes, Fox Business Channel will start with 30 million subscribers as the network has distribution agreements with several cable operators including Time Warner, Comcast, Charter, and satellite operator DirecTV. Based at News Corp. headquarters in Manhattan, Fox Business Channel is expected to be available in major markets across the U.S. on expanded basic cable, including the financial hub of New York City. In addition to Ailes, Neil Cavuto, Fox News SVP/Managing Editor of Business News will supervise business news content, while Kevin Magee, Fox News EVP will manage daily operations of the new network. Alexis Glick, former personality on CNBC, will be the Director/Business News as well as on the air, reporting to Neil Cavuto.

~ MORE STUFF ~

Anna Nicole Smith, 39, died yesterday at a South Florida hospital after collapsing into unconsciousness in her hotel room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, FL. The cause of death is under investigation. The news of her death came late yesterday afternoon, breaking first from Entertainment Tonight. Smith began her career as a model and actress, posing in Playboy magazine and appearing in Guess! jeans commercials, and appearing in a handful of films.  Her true fame came when she married 89 year old Howard Marshall III, and upon his death she was bestowed $474 million, which was later disputed in court by Marshall’s family.  Anna Nicole also had her own reality show on E!, which ran for two seasons.  Last September she gave birth her her daughter, Dannielynne, and a couple of days later her 20 year old son Daniel died.  A formal inquiry into his death is scheduled for next month. There is also a question as to the father of Anna Nicole’s daughter – attorney and business associate Howard K. Stern, or an ex-boyfriend Larry Birkhead.

Two immediate specials about Anna Nicole Smith are scheduled this weekend: tonight ABC’s 20/20 will report on her life and death from 10-11p and The Biography Channel will chronicle Anna’s up and down life on February 10 at 8p.

PBS will air two live primetime presidential forums with Tavis Smiley as moderator. Smiley conceived the idea for these forums based on the book he edited, Covenant with Black America, and each forum will feature three selected journalists of color asking questions. The first forum for Democratic candidates will be held at Howard University in Washington, D.C. on June 28 at 9p, and the second for the Republicans will be September 27 at 9p at Morgan State University in Baltimore.

ESPN will debut NBA Live: Bring It Home on February 11 at 7p, a new reality competition show produced by Roadside Entertainment. With $100,000 at stake, the six-episode series will bring together eight NBA Live gamers from around the world playing in a tournament and trying to gain home court advantage. The tournament finale will be held on the court of the National Champion Miami Heat.

Moniker changes over at Disney.  Touchstone Television, Disney-ABC Television Group’s in-house production company has become ABC Television Studio.  The name change reflects the company strategy, also announced yesterday, to focus on three core brands, Disney, ABC and ESPN.  Also shifting names is the Buena Vista Games unit that will now be known as Disney Interactive Studios.

Wyoming-based Cochise Broadcasting LLC has agreed to buy KFMM-FM and KCUZ-AM, both located in Eastern Arizona, from Wick Communications Company. The deal is pending ownership application transfer approval from the FCC.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Fox has committed to a new project starring Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton, called Action News.  The network has ordered 13 episodes, and according to Variety will pay 20th Century Fox TV a license fee of $1.3 – $1.4 million per episode. The comedy is written by Christopher Lloyd and Steve Levitan.

Casting:

  • CBS has cast David Clayton Rogers in the drama pilot Demons from CBS Paramount Network Television. The plot surrounds a former priest who performs exorcisms and a doctoral candidate (played by Rogers) who researches neurological anomalies with paranormal manifestations.
  • ABC‘s drama pilot Dirty Sexy Money, has engaged Peter Krause to star.  The project is from Touchstone TV, now called ABC TV Studio, who takes on his father’s attorney client list, including a very wealthy and apparently morally pliable family.
  • ABC‘s Cashmere Mafia from Darren Star Prods and Sony Pictures TV revolves around four high-power women executives.  Miranda Otto has been cast as one of the four.
  • Lipstick Jungle, on tap at NBC and from NBC Universal TV Studio, is also about a group of women, tho these wealthy women are searching for more power.  Kim Raver has been added to the cast.

CorrectionChuck, a drama pilot from Warner Bros. TV about a computer geek who is also a secret agent working for the National Security Agency, was misidentified yesterday as an ABC project – it’s for NBC.

~ BROADBAND & DIGITAL ~

CBS has completed a launch of three new web sites geared to mobile users. The first, CBS Mobile Store at www.CBSMobile.com, will include games and voicetones created from CBS programs. Two additional components will include “live wallpapers” using scenes from CBS reality shows that can be downloaded in still images as well as Dave TV – daily video highlights from Late Night with David Letterman. Users can access content from this site through a one-time download charge or via a subscription rate. In addition, CBS Mobile will have two CBS WAP sites at wap.CBSSportsLine.com featuring real-time scores and a place to house fantasy sports teams, and wap.CBSNews.com that will contain full stories, images and almost real-time breaking news coverage of events. Both WAP sites will be ad-supported on most carriers and therefore free to consumers.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Rich Miller has been hired as GM for the media services agency, Media First International.

The LA-based advertising firm, davidandgoliath (dng) has named two executives to its automotive team: Colin Jeffery will be Executive Creative Director and Russell Wager as Managing Partner/Group Client Director.

ABC News has named Taina Hernandez and Ryan Owens as Co-Anchors of World News Now and America This Morning. Both will also contribute reports for Good Morning America as well as other ABC News broadcasts and platforms.

Max Howard, former President of Warner Bros. Feature Animation and SVP of Disney Feature Animation, will head Exodus Film Group as President.
