Facebook is beginning to make a name for itself on the international stage. The company completed a tie-up with Vodaphone in the UK to allow its 8.9 million mobile subscribers to receive newsfeeds, messages, status updates and “pokes” from their profiles. Also, as part of its Translations project, a Spanish language version of the site is now available – accessible by clicking on the account tab then selecting language. Next week users in Spanish speaking countries will see their profiles in Spanish by default. Finally, Morocco’s state run news agency is reporting that authorities in Casablanca have rounded up the usual suspects and arrested an engineer accused of stealing the identity of Prince Moulay Rachid on Facebook. The prince is the younger brother of King Mohammed VI and second in line to the throne.
Eager to get in front of Facebook’s 60 million+ users, CBS Sports is improving its March Madness Brackets application on Facebook and including a CBS Mobile component this year, allowing users to fill out their brackets and compare results with friends. CBS Sports, CSTV, CBSSports.com and NCAA.com will also provide coverage of the tournament through the application. More than 2.6 million Facebook users participated in a similar feature on the site last year.
Comcast’s Golf Channel.com completed a redesign featuring highlights, stats, instructional videos, equipment reviews and social networking features. It sports a clean, uncluttered look with nice use of white space.
BravoTV.com has launched a web spin-off of Project Runway following the trials and tribulations of former designer and Project participant Malan Breton. This season’s 12 designers will also participate in an online fashion challenge running Feb. 21 – March 6, judged by BravoTV.com users.

Netscape founder Marc Andreessen went against the grain of worry over the potential Microsoft/Yahoo merger in his Pmarca.com blog, arguing the merger would have little impact on the market for start-ups and acquisitions. Venture Capitalists have been voicing concern all week that the removal of Yahoo from Silicon Valley would stifle innovation by taking away one of the more aggressive M&A players.
Video solutions provider TurnHere secured $7.5 million in financing from Venrock and Hearst Interactive Media. TurnHere’s customers include CondeNet, Discovery and Simon & Schuster.
Animation portal MyToons.com launched a branded channel on YouTube to showcase the work of its community of animators.
Firebrand.com, web component to the ION TV commercial show Firebrand TV, is conducting a “Water Cooler” promotion over the weekend, asking users to pick their favorite Super Bowl spots for the chance to win cash prizes. Firebrand TV will air the winning entries on Monday at 11 pm/10 C.
The U.S. Dept. of Justice launched an antitrust investigation into price fixing on the yet-to-launch online subscription music service TotalMusic backed by Universal and Sony BMG, reports MusicAlly. The DoJ also looked closely at Universal and Sony’s former PressPlay as well as the Warner/EMI/BMG’s MusicNet venture with RealNetworks, both of which were eclipsed by iTunes when the iPod took off.
Among Super Bowl advertisers, the fastest growing web site from Super Bowl Sunday to Monday was Fox Interactive Media‘s MySpace.com/SuperBowlAds , according to Nielsen Online, increasing 104% from 441,000 to 900,000 unique visitors. Victoria’s Secret and FOX Sports on MSN also saw significant daily gains, growing 86 percent and 72 percent, respectively. Web traffic increased 24% overall from Sunday to Monday among Super Bowl advertisers collectively.
Super Tuesday web results are trickling in. ABCNews.com reported that page views spiked 53% from a typical day with most of the traffic visiting the Politics section, which featured an interactive map providing real-time results. CNN.com is reporting 97 million page views and 11.9 million unique visitors for the day, both highs since the site relaunched on July 1.
comScore reported revenue of $25.3 million for Q4 2007, an increase of 39% compared to the Q4 of 2006 and an increase of 13% over the previous quarter.
Nielsen has made a strategic investment in NeuroFocus, a firm that specializes in applying brainwave research to advertising, programming and messaging. The two companies will work together in an alliance to develop new forms of measurement and metrics based on the latest advances in neuroscience.
Nielsen’s social networking site Hey! Nielsen recruited over 200 of its members to participate in a live survey for Super Bowl XLII, asking them to score each commercial on a scale from 1 (fumble) to 4 (touchdown) in real-time.

Web video producers 10ton launched the latest online greeting card site this week called carded.tv. The free site draws on a cast of unique characters to convey sentiments sometimes overlooked by the traditional greeting card companies such as “congrats on losing your virginity” or “drunk and thinking of you” and accepts user submissions if you want to join the fun. An audio personalization feature announces the names of the sender and receiver. Check out the Nerds in Love category – perfect for Valentine’s Day.
