Good morning. It’s Friday, February 1, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

FOX Sports Digital appointed a new head honcho, naming Pete Vlastelica as Senior Vice President of Digital. Vlastelica was formerly Senior Vice President of Product Strategy, and will now oversee content, product strategy, and operations for FOX Sports Digital, including FOXSports.com, FOX Sports NEXT, FOX Sports Local, Yardbarker, and WhatifSports.com. Jeff Husvar, Executive Vice President and General Manager of FOX Sports Digital since December 2009, will shift away from his current day-to-day responsibilities into a new role in which he will work on special projects and business development.

Super Bowl Notes

CBS evening news Anchor and Managing Editor Scott Pelley will interview President Barack Obama live from the White House at 4:30p during pre-game coverage on The Super Bowl Today on Sunday.

CBS Sports is teaming with Queen and Helmut VonLichten to re-mix the iconic rock classic “We Will Rock You” with The NFL on CBS’s theme music to create a new anthem to be featured in the opening tease and during the network’s coverage of the Super Bowl. VonLichten has previously written themes for the network that include programs such as Cold Case, The NFL Today and the US Open Tennis Championships.

ESPN revealed its plans for Super Sunday, featuring a four-hour Super Bowl XLII edition of Sunday NFL Countdown starting at 10a. Host Chris Berman will be joined by analysts Cris Carter, Mike Ditka, Tom Jackson and Keyshawn Johnson on the main set at Jax Brewery in the heart of the French Quarter. Suzy Kolberand analysts Tedy Bruschi, Trent Dilfer, Merril Hoge, Ron Jaworski and Steve Young will appear from a second set.

Coca-Cola made peace with the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee over its Super Bowl spot that the group considered racist, according to Reuters. The ad featured an Arab walking through a desert with a camel during the race for the beverage. After a “productive conversation” with the group and explaining the character, the group will not change the commercial and will continue as planned.

FedEx has been recruiting NFL stars during Super Bowl week to team up with New Orleans students and open a pop-up lemonade stand in the Super Bowl Media Center as a way to teach the youths about small business. The stunt also marks the company’s 10th year in sponsoring the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week awards.

On the Air

Golf Channel earned its most-watched January in the history of the network, according to Nielsen. The channel drew an average of 105,000 viewers per minute for Total Day viewing, marking a 22% year-over-year spike over January 2012. During the month, Golf Channel had 14.6 million unique viewers, which includes three telecasts with million-plus audiences.

The network also revealed the first slate of celebrities lined up next week for the relaunch of Morning Drive. Among the guests in-studio on Monday will be 2011 PGA Champion Keegan Bradley, who is making his first appearance in-studio, and 2010 U.S. Open Champion Graeme McDowell. Monday’s edition will also feature a sit-down with Golf Channel co-founder Arnold Palmer.

This week’s Atlantic Coast Conference meetings will look to shape the future of the league, as athletic directors and faculty reps discuss a potential alliance with the Big 12 and how it could bolster the prospects of an ACC Network, according to CBS Sports. The ACC has met with the Wasserman Media Group to mull the launch of a conference-branded channel, which would likely involve ESPN, due to the structure of the conference’s current media deal. “The concept is to explore some options with the Big 12, find out what we can and can’t do together, then take that to the market — ESPN — and see what kind of value it has,” one ACC source told the site.

Speaking of the Big 12, conference commissioner Bob Bowlsby confirmed reports that the league likely will seek permission from the NCAA to hold a championship game despite now having 12 members, which is now required under the current rules. The AP reports that Bowlsby told reporters the league “probably will” ask for a waiver from the NCAA to bend the rules.

NBA TV will commemorate black history month in a new episode of Open Court, on Tuesday, Feb. 5, following that night’s NBA Fan Nightgame. The special edition of the show will focus on topics ranging from race relations and segregation to how sports have helped bring ethnicities together. Studio host Ernie Johnson moderates the panel with Hall of Famers Charles Barkley and Reggie Miller, five-time NBA Champion Steve Kerr, four-time NBA Champion Shaquille O’Neal, two-time NBA Champion Kenny Smith, five-time NBA All-Star Chris Webber and NBA Champion Steve Smith.

NBC Sports Network kicks off its 2013 Rugby Sevens telecast season with two hours of coverage of the Hertz Sevens tournament on Saturday at 5p. The Hertz Sevens tournament marks the fourth of nine stops on the 2012-13 HSBC Sevens World Series. Bill Seward will serve as the play-by-play announcer for the telecast and will be joined in the booth by former USA Sevens captain and USA Rugby World Cup participant Brian Hightower.

beIN Sport announced that American fans won’t have to miss out on David Beckham, who signed a five-month contract to play with Paris Saint-Germain. The channel has exclusive live coverage of France’s Ligue 1 and will televise what will likely be Beckham’s first match with the club on Friday, Feb. 8 at 2:15p on the English-language channel of the beIN SPORT network.

Last chance to enter without paying late fees! Now is the time to submit for our 2013 Cynopsis Sports Media Awards. The deadline is February 1 and we want to see your best work from the past year. Don’t let someone else take your trophy! Click here for entry information.

Major League Baseball revealed the top 52 fans vying for a slot in the 2013 MLB Fan Cave. All of the video submissions are available for voting at MLBFanCave.com through Feb. 13. This year’s slate of candidates include the likes of “recent college grads, journalists, bloggers, comedians, musicians, rappers, a chef, and a piano teacher,” according to the league. The MLB Fan Cave returns for its third year in the same location this season at Fourth Street and Broadway, although the digs are being redesigned this time around.

Anheuser-Busch inked a 10-year deal with the 49ers that will make the company a founding partner of the team’s new venue. The agreement makes Bud Light the official malt beverage partner of the team at the 68,500-seat facility, according to local reports.

Head & Shoulders, the official shampoo of MLB, is calling up All-Star pitcher C.J. Wilson of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as the brand’s newest athlete to join the brand’s “Mane Man” ambassador team. Wilson now joins the likes of Troy Polamalu and Brett Keisel of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Olympian Michael Phelps.

Quicken Loans Inc., is once again partnering with Michigan International Speedway to sponsor the Quicken Loans 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Sunday, June 16. Along with its renewed sponsorship of the Quicken Loans 400, Quicken Loans is the primary sponsor of Stewart-Haas Racing’s No. 39 team and driver Ryan Newman for 18 Sprint Cup races.

Former NFL player Bill Romanowski is now on team NASCAR. The athlete signed on as a minority-owner of Swan Racing and inked a deal for his health supplement company Nutrician53 as the primary sponsor for ten Sprint Cup races this season.

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association and SnowSports Industries America honored POC Sports, supplier of helmets, goggles and alpine accessories, with the Doc DesRoches Award. The award is presented annually by SIA and the USSA to recognize a national team supplier for innovation in marketing the team’s brands and athletes. POC Sports was cited for its support and marketing around elite team athletes as well as its educational outreach to USSA’s local clubs around the country as well of its support of both clubs and athletes at that vital development level.

The NHL formally announced that the league has renewed its North American partnership with BlackBerry. The deal will see BlackBerry continue to support NHL media platforms including NHL Network and NHL.com as well as league broadcast partners. The agreement also locks in BlackBerry as the presenting sponsor of the Trade Deadline show airing on NHL Network and makes the NHL GameCenter app available for the new BlackBerry 10 platform.

Electronic Arts revealed that the 25th Anniversary edition of Madden NFL will be released on Aug. 27. Although fans expected the game to be dubbed Madden 14, this year’s release will actually be called Madden 25 to mark the occasion.

The Main Event

Super Bowl XLII on CBS at 6:30p.
