Cynopsis: Kids!

02/18/11

Good morning. It’s Friday, February 18, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

The Jim Henson Company and Guillermo Del Toro are teaming up with Pathe to develop and produce a 3D stop-motion animated adaptation of Pinocchio, which is based on an edition of author Carlo Collodi’s story that was illustrated by Gris Grimly.  Grimly is set to co-direct the movie with Mark Gustafson (Animation Director/The Fantastic Mr. Fox).  Expected to head into production later this year, the movie features a story developed by Del Toro and collaborator Matthew Robbins, and a screenplay by Robins.  Del Toro will produce with Lisa Henson and Jason Lust of The Jim Henson Company and Allison Abbate (The Fantastic Mr. Fox and Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie). Gary Ungar will executive producer, as will Francois Ivernel and Cameron McCracken for Pathe. Rocker and film composer Nick Cave will serve as music consultant for the production.  The team will develop the puppets and other 3D elements with UK-based MacKinnon and Saunders, which also did the same for The Fantastic Mr. Fox and Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Enamation, an Italian production company, and French animation studio/production company Ellipsanime along with RAI Fiction have inked a deal to co-develop and produce the multi-platform CGI animated series Cross Worlds (26×30).  Cross Worlds is slated to being production this year and deliver in 2012.  The series revolves around five estranged teens who come together despite their differences to rescue a mutual friend, a genius game developer, who is trapped by one of his own creations.  The series will also include digital games, a website to develop Cross Worlds community novels and graphic novels.

Fifteen-year-old actress Cierra Ramirez (The Suite Life of Zack and Cody) is to play the lead role in the coming of age feature film Ansiedad (Anxiety) with Eva Mendes, per VarietyPantelion Films, a new joint venture between Lionsgate and Televisa, will finance and distribute the movie.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney Channel‘s new original music/dance comedy Madison High (working title) show gets cast members and production schedule.  Alyson Reed will reprise her role of Ms. Darbus, the drama teacher from High School Musical (HSM) on TV and film.  Reed has also appeared on Broadway (Dancin’, Dance A Little Closer, Cabaret, among others).  Production on the Madison High pilot begins next month for a potential series that would launch on the network in early 2012.  Madison High follows Darbus and her theatre students as they create musical productions based on their lives.  The pilot features four original songs written by Matthew Gerrard (Hannah Montana, High School Musical), Robbie Nevil (Hannah Montana, HSM), Jamie Houston (HSM), James Dean Hicks, David Lawrence (HSM, HSM 2), Faye Greenberg (HSM 2), Kara DioGuardi (Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam) and J.D. Salbego.  Lester Lewis (The Office) wrote the pilot, which he’ll executive produce with Bill Borden and Barry Rosenbush (HSM and its sequels), and Paul Hoen (Camp Rock 2, Jonas, Jump In, The Troop). Hoen will direct the pilot.  The cast also includes characters played by actors/singers/dancers Luke Benward (Minuteman), Leah Lewis and G Hannelius (Den Brother).  Additional casting announcements are forthcoming.
