It seems the Canadian entertainment industry is putting aside its differences to meet and discuss the best way to defend itself against a common enemy – Netflix. Friday’s pow-wow, organized by the Canadian Media Production Association (CMPA), will include local broadcasters, cable and satellite TV services, indie producers and various unions and guilds, according to THR. Netflix launched a streaming-only service in Canada last Sept., charging $7.99/mo (Canadian) for unlimited streaming of movies and TV shows with no revenue sharing agreement in place with the Canadian industry. In more Canadian media news, the Canadian Radio-Television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) launched a public initiative yesterday seeking comments on technical and regulatory measures that might be employed to quell loud TV commercials. ~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
DVD Kiosk operator Redbox is getting closer to finding a partner with a “a lot of quality entertainment rights” to go in on a video streaming offering, President Mitch Lowe told analysts this week. The plan is to market a Netflix-style subscription service that will allow users to watch unlimited movies on computers or multiple connected devices to its kiosk DVD customers. Wal-Mart and Amazon.com, which has reportedly been in talks with Hollywood Studios to launch its own subscription-based streaming service, are both on the short list, per the Seattle Times.
 
Recognizing Hispanic’s love of social networking, NBCU’s Hispanic broadcast network Telemundo is launching a new social media division dubbed “Social@Telemundo,” dedicated to delivering web, Facebook & Twitter interactive experiences tied to its shows and novelas. Hispanics over-index vs. the general population in having a broadband connection, watching video online and spending time on Facebook and Twitter, according network research.
 
NBC News is teaming with Perseus Books to launch an e-book around the classic miniseries Roots, featuring video from the NBC News Archives, rare Haley family photos, recordings from the Haley Estate and commentary from NBC News Special Correspondent Tom Brokaw. 

 
~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
YouTube is pitching an interesting arrangement to Hollywood celebrities who would like to cut out the middleman and begin producing their own content for the site, reports New York Magazine. The site will help celebs fund 3-minute video segments for their own branded YouTube channel, videos the talent would ultimately retain ownership of, in exchange for a share of the ad revenue generated on the channel. The Google subsidiary is offering to put up as much as $5 million per channel.
 
UK-based music streaming service Spotify, which is working hard to launch its service stateside, has just lined up EMI in a U.S. distribution deal, per AllThingsD. The company also finalized a deal with Sony last month.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Barcode advertising specialist Jagtag has come out with a new QR code offering designed to reach a broader array of phones. Instead of requiring a QR code-reading app on users’ smartphones, those with a feature phone can now snap a picture of a Jagtag QR code and mail or MMS it in to receive video, images audio or text. The multimedia message is sent to the phone’s inbox, instead of appearing as a link.
 
Pre-roll ads continue to dominate on the YuMe ad network, representing 96.7% of YuMe’s overall volume during Q4, with :15 second spots remaining the dominate length – making up 57% of all impression served. The 25-54 demo was the most requested group by advertisers while the Female audience continues to have a higher video completion rate, at 74% versus 67% for Males.
 
For the fourth straight quarter, video-related formats topped the performance list for interaction rates, with videos that included menu bars featuring expanded options performing best, according to Unicast‘s Q4 2010 US Analytics Benchmark Report. The home improvement category emerged as the top interactive ad performer for the first time in 2010, followed by Media and Entertainment/Music.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Cisco Media Solutions Group announced updates to the Cisco Eos video platform that brings the ability to play video and digital content across all mobile and desktop platforms with support for HTML 5 and Flash 10.1. The Eos platform recently launched on its 100th live site.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Broadcasters led all online publishers in 2010 serving up 1.7 billion total minutes of video streaming, retaking the top position from newspapers with the start of the fall TV season and coverage of the World Cup, fall elections and other events. But newspapers saw the biggest growth in the number of videos uploaded (1.2 million titles for Q4- up 147% quarter-over-quarter) according to the Q4 Online Video & Media Industry Report from TubeMogul and Brightcove. U.S. newspapers also enjoyed the highest number of video player loads by far, suggesting the availability of players across more pages. Other findings included:

  • Brands saw an impressive 98% jump in engagement during the quarter, reaching 2:03 minutes on average compared to 1:03 minutes watched the prior quarter and suggesting that brands are improving the quality of their creative
  • Facebook and Twitter accounted for the highest engagement rates across all media categories. Brands saw highest video engagement when referred by Yahoo!, which has had success syndicating content
  • Broadcast content viewers from the United States had the highest minutes watched per view (3:53) with European viewers close behind (3:34)

 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim has branched out with its own iPhone app featuring clips and full-length episodes from many of its best shows including Robot Chicken, The Venture Bros, Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Children’s Hospital. The free app takes an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach, throwing in a clock, a calculator, wallpapers, weather info and other surprises.

AOL’s $315 million deal to acquire aggregated news site The Huffington Post has raised more than a few eyebrows as pundits wonder how a site that relies on appropriating content from other sites to populate its pages can be worth that much. (AOL investors are still asking the same question about UK-based social networking site Bebo, which AOL paid $850 million for in 2008 – before dumping it for less than $10 million to a VC firm two years later.)  Stephen Colbert took issue with HuffPo‘s practices in his Tip of the Hat/Wag of the Finger segment on Wednesday night in hilarious fashion – namely the practice of making ad revenue off his content without paying a dime for it. To prove his point, The Colbert Nation launched The Colbuffington Re-Post, simply the Huffington Post with a new border around it. His plan is to sell it for $316 million.
