Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, February 10, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

The TV upfront season got an early start in NYC yesterday as Disney ABC Kids Networks rolled out its multiplatform Mix It Up plan aiming to reach kids, tweens and families, through customizable options on a smorgasbord of broadband services, TV networks, as well as through Radio Disney and Disney Publishing.  The 2006-2007 “brick and mortar” TV season will bring a mix of 849 new episodes from 11 new and returning series and 25 new movies on Disney Channel, ABC Kids Saturday morning programming block, Toon Disney.  The Mix it Up theme was used on the TV side by cross-pollinating their shows on several networks to reach different audiences.  Fall 2006 will also see the launch of the Disney Channel original series Lizzie McGuire and Even Stevens into syndication. The network breakdown and programming for the new season looks like this:

ABC Kids – Fall 2006:
New to the Saturday morning block in September 2006 is the new animated series The Replacements, which will premiere on both ABC Kids and Disney Channel.  Also joining ABC Kids this fall is the live action series Hannah Montana, which premieres next month on Disney Channel.

10:30a That’s So Raven
11:00a Hanna Montana (new series)

Toon Disney – fall 2006:
This fall the Jetix programming block will air only on Toon Disney (it currently airs on ABC Family as well). The fall lineup includes the 15th iteration of the Power Rangers; the new animated series Yin Yang Yo from Disney TV Animation; as well as four acquisitions: Jackie Chan Adventures, Oban Star-Racers, Mon Colle Knights and NASCAR Racers.  And in the cross-pollination column – American Dragon: Jake Long, Lilo & Stitch: The Series and The Buzz on Maggie will join Toon Disney.  These shows are already seen on Disney Channel and/or ABC Kids.

Disney Channel:
The new original live-action comedy Hannah Montana premieres Friday, March 24, 2006.  The show revolves around Miley, a teen girl who moves from Tennessee to Malibu, with her older brother and widowed father, a songwriter.  What the kids at her new school don’t know is Miley is a pop singer named Hannah Montana.  The series stars newcomer Miley Cyrus, Emily Osment, Mitchel Musso, Jason Earles and real-life father of the series lead, country music recording artist Billy Ray Cyrus.   Also coming, three original movies – Cow Belles on March 24, Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior, and The Cheetah Girls 2.

Sony Pictures Television has cleared Beakman’s World, the live-action educational/information series, in 65% of the country, including the Fox O&O stations.  Targeted tweens/teens 13-16 year-olds, Beakman’s World was designed to comply with the Children’s Television Act.  Based on the Universal Press Syndicate comic feature You Can with Beakman & Jax, created by Jok Church, the Beakman’s World TV series was a joint enterprise of Columbia Pictures Television, Columbia TriStar Television Distribution and Universal Belo Productions and debuted in 1992.

BCI, DVD and CD publisher, is set to release the release all 39 original episodes of Ultraman, the Japanese live-action TV series in July 2006.  Ultraman was originally produced by Tsuburaya Productions, and the original episodes were broadcast on Tokyo Broadcasting System from July 1966-April 1967.  An additional 11 Ultraman TV series were produced from 1967-1998.  Ultraman was syndicated on TV in the US by United Artists in the 1970s.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products has awarded Thinkway Toys the global master toy license for the upcoming CGI animated theatrical feature film Happy Feet, which is slated for release November 2006.  Under the agreement, Thinkway Toys will manufacture, market and sell a full line of toys inspired by the movie, including an interactive singing and dancing plush, as well as tap dancing penguin feet, dance mats, a karaoke microphone and other toys based on the film. The line also includes collectible figures, play sets and role-play toys.  These products will be available around the world simultaneously with the release of the movie this fall.  Set in Antarctica, Happy Feet is the story of Mumble, a young Emperor Penguin born without the necessary ability to sing, a trait needed to attract a mate.  However, Mumble happens to be one great tap dancer.  Directed by George Miller, Happy Feet is presented by Warner Bros. Pictures in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, and is a Kennedy-Miller production in association with Animal Logic Film.

More executive moves over at the new MTV Networks Kids and Family GroupJulia Pistor has been promoted to EVP/Nickelodeon Movies.  Pistor will oversee the development, production and release of all feature films produced under the Nickelodeon Movies banner.  Additionally, Michelle Raimo has been named SVP/Production, Nickelodeon Movies. Raimo joins the movie division from Paramount Pictures where she was a Production Executive.

Chris D’Ablemont has been appointed Director/Ad Sales, PBS Kids Sprout.  In his new post, D’Ablemont will be responsible for generating new business overseeing communication with agencies, buying groups and clients and working closely with a range of the channel’s departments.  D’Ablemont was most recently Account Manager/Ad Sales for Nickelodeon and Noggin responsible for ad sales efforts and ad buys for Nick Online, Nick Print, Nick Consumer Products and Nick Recreation.
