Good morning. It’s Friday, December 6, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
SiriusXM and the NBA are launching an exclusive league channel that will tip off on Monday, December 9, and is designed to cover the league “24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and bring fans closer to the game.” SiriusXM NBA Radio will live on Channel 217 and feature exclusive interviews throughout the day including NBA Commissioner David Stern, NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, Los Angeles Lakers head coach Mike D’Antoni, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving, and more. In addition, the channel will offer fans more than 14 live NBA games each week as well as a daily schedule of NBA-focused news and talk from the likes of Kenny Smith and Steve Kerr; Stacey King; Lionel Hollins; Mike Dunleavy, Sr., and Sam Mitchell; Nancy Lieberman; and Mateen Cleaves.
FOX Sports announced a new executive management structure, handing David Nathanson and Bill Wanger with new responsibilities. Nathanson was named General Manager & Chief Operating Officer, FOX Sports 1 and FOX Sports 2, a newly created position, while Wanger will now serve as Executive Vice President, Programming, Research & Content Strategy. Reporting to Nathanson, as the senior management team guiding both national sports channels, are Scott Ackerson, who becomes Executive Vice President, News; George Greenberg, whose title is now Executive Vice President, Content Integration & Presentation; and Michael Bloom, who remains FOX Sports’ Senior Vice President, Original Programming.
NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France offered a state of the union for the organization in Las Vegas, telling reporters that its upcoming deal with NBC could be a game-changer. “Right away, we’re going to get a lot more attention simply because it’s their focus,” he said. “They’re going to use the assets within the (NBC) Universal platform, the E Channel, things that we don’t think about every day, to cross-promote day in and day out. And when you create interest levels that hopefully go up, we match that with even better racing than we have today, (that’s) our goal.”
NBA TV added former NBA executive and head coach Stu Jackson to its ranks, where he will serve as a contributor on league-related topics including rules clarifications, discipline, and general league operations. His first in-studio appearance is slated to take place on NBA GameTime on Friday, Dec. 13. He will also contribute across NBA Digital’s portfolio, including answering questions from fans via Twitter @StuJackson32 – and providing insights on NBA.com. His first Twitter chat will be Friday, Dec. 6.
Deportes Telemundo announced that Honduran presenter Ana Jurka was joining the on-air team as reporter and co-host for a number of network properties, including current events segments featured on Futbol Estelar and Barclays Premier League on Telemundo, mun2 as well as the brand’s digital platform. The Pac-12 Networks are gearing up for Championship Week with a bevy of programming surrounding the game, including the Pac-12 Football Championship Coaches Press Conference today, as well as the Pac-12 Championship Pregame Show on Saturday featuring host Mike Yam and analysts Rick Neuheisel and Curtis Conway. Pac-12 Networks also programmed other NCAA postseason coverage this week with live coverage of the 1stand 2nd round volleyball matchups, as well as quarterfinal action from the men’s soccer tournament.
Saturday’s Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale main card ranked as the second most watched UFC show on Fox Sports 1, according to MMA Torch, as well as the sixth most watched program ever on the young network. The telecast averaged 1,129,000 viewers.
