Cynopsis: DIGITAL
08/05/11

Good morning, it’s Friday, August 5, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

Facebook is looking into making major changes to its all-important News Feed in an effort to help advertisers rise above the clutter, according to a WSJ report. Engineers are working to come up with an unfiltered News Feed that will take into account even more personal information, including brands users gravitate to and moves their friends make. Marketers may also soon be able to bake in their own customizable action options around their content beyond the tiresome “Like” button.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Lionsgate UK has reportedly struck a multiyear streaming media content deal with Netflix as the digital media distributor prepares to expand it service across the pond. Lionsgate’s U.S. arm recently licensed all 7 seasons of the Mad Men to Netflix and has partnered with the company as a member of the Epix streaming movie service.

“Green Lantern” and “Horrible Bosses” will be the first Warner Bros. movies to be integrated with the cloud-based UltraViolet digital video locker service during Q4, according to Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes.

PGA.com will offer live coverage of the 93rd PGA Golf Championship through its broadband channels and iTunes app including multiple live video streams, marquee groups and par-3 coverage. A new 360-degree camera is being rolled out this year, featuring video highlights and live action updates.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Philadelphia-based Monetate has landed $15 million in a round of series B funding led by OpenView Venture Partners. The technology start-up provides e-commerce companies with an easy way to test, target and personalize website content, allowing marketers to run multiple concurrent testing campaigns while monitoring and measuring test results in real time.

Filmmaker Ed Burns’ ultra-low budget “Newlyweds,” which closed this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, will be released during late 2011 – simultaneously on multiple platforms by Tribeca Film including theaters, iTunes and VOD. The movie was shot in 12 days in New York City for around $9,000. Burns’ “Nice Guy Johnny” was given a similar release.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Digital Broadcasting Group has launched it own ad platform to allow third party publishers to syndicate and monetize online video. The “CLiP” library launched yesterday with more than 20k licensed videos with several launch partners on board including Technorati and Ology.

McCann Worldgroup announced the acquisition of UK-based interactive design shop AllofUs for an undisclosed amount, a specialist in the field of user experience.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

DirecTV experienced its smallest subscriber gains in the U.S. in two years during Q2, adding just 26,000 U.S. subscribers, but helped make up for it by adding 476k new Latin American subs. The company, which says it officially surpassed 30 million total customers in both territories, is looking into throwing its hat into the ring for Hulu, according to comments made by CEO Michael White during a conference call with analysts.

Trying to whip up the court of public opinion, Google turned to its company blog to vent about a perceived plot against Android by rivals Microsoft, Apple and Oracle, who are supposedly filing bogus patents to slow up the free platform’s progress. Android still seems to be doing O.K. – more than 550k Android devices are still being activated each day.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

The new Google+ social network has attracted over 25 million users during its first month in operation, according to ComScore, reaching the mark far quicker than rivals Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. (The 25 million mark took Facebook 35 months, Twitter 30 months and MySpace more than 20 months.)

The erosion of traditional pay TV revenues is bound to continue as the fortunes of over-the-top distribution rise, according to a new report from IMS Research. OTT video services will generate $16.4 billion in 2016, topping the $14.7 billion generated from video-on-demand (VOD) services from pay-TV operators. A total of 5.9 billion pay-OTT transactions (including PPV and subscription) will be initiated via fixed in-home devices in 2016, up from an estimated 563 million pay-OTT transactions in 2011.

A total of 78.5 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones during the three months ending in June 2011, up 8% from the preceding three month period, according to ComScore‘s MobiLens service. Google Android grew its leading market share reaching 40% of U.S. smartphone users, up 5.4 percentage points. Apple strengthened its #2 position with 26.6% of the market (up 1.1%), while RIM, Microsoft and Symbian all lost ground. Mobile browsing, text messages, social networking and game playing were all up during the 3-month period.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Endemol Games UK
is set to launch one of the world’s first motion control sensor games not developed around the Xbox Kinect controller. Based on the hit TV show Total Wipeout, the game utilizes motion control technology developed from OmniMotion Technology (OMD), allowing users to use their bodies to control the action through their webcam. It will be available through Facebook, or as a downloadable application from totalwipeout.co.uk.

Sony
has officially delayed the release of its new PlayStation Vita portable console, meaning it won’t be available in the U.S. or Europe in time for the holidays.

VOIP calling service Vonage launched a new iOS Time to Call app that allows Vonage and non-Vonage customers alike to make international calls (via WiFi or 3G) and pay for them through their iTunes account. It’s kind of like a payphone; you pay between $2 and $10 for up to 15 min. of talk time, depending on the country.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Facebook confirmed that Head of Marketing Randi Zuckerberg, sister of founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, is leaving the company to start her own social media firm, as reported by AllThingsD. She is best known to internet audiences for hosting the “Facebook Live” online news show.

WPP’s Kantar Video has hired former AditAll GM Arthur McKinley as VP/Business Development. He will be leading agency and brand relations around the company’s Videolytics Platform, reporting directly to CEO Bill Lederer in New York.

David Bell, Advisor/Investor and Chairman Emeritus at Interpublic Group, and Alan Gould, Executive in Residence at Greycroft Partners venture capital and former co-CEO of IAG Research, have joined online ad measurement platform Vizu‘s Board of Directors.

Ali Kellerman has been named to the newly-created position of Senior Manager, Custom Media Solutions for the Travel Ad Network.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

There are countless online and mobile apps to help you organize your music collection but users have little to choose from when it comes to their video libraries. During his conference call with analysts on Wed., Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes mentioned the new Flixter Collections beta client app, the first of its kind that helps align users’ iTunes, Amazon, Hulu and Netflix accounts in a single dashboard. Flixter was acquired earlier this year by Time Warner and will be tied to the industry-wide Ultraviolet system to help manage digital purchases in the cloud. Aside from offering bonus content such as free extras and free downloads of rarities including TV pilots, the Flixter Collections portal wants to become audiences’ first stop when learning about new releases. It allows you to link to buy tickets, share preferences with friends and look at recommendations based on past viewing. You can certainly learn a lot about viewers’ tastes by looking at their Netflix queue and the movies on their hard drive; it’s just not clear that users will be comfortable giving that kind of control to a movie studio.
