Cynopsis: Kids!
8/03/07
Good morning. It’s Friday, August 3, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Can you stand more Harry Potter news? Sure you can! Scholastic’s newest sales numbers for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows are in, and in the first 10 days of the seventh and final Potter book’s release the publisher has sold 11.5 million copies in the US. Yes, that is a record. To date, over 350 million copies of the seven books in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series have been sold worldwide.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Paramount and DreamWorks have honed in on May 21, 2010 as the release date for the fourth Shrek movie, The Next Shrek (a working title), according to Variety. That weekend seems to have worked well for the Shrek franchise, with this year’s Shrek The Third, which was released on May 18, 2007, earning $122+ million domestically in its first weekend, not to mention Shrek 2 (May 19, 2004/$108m), and Shrek (May 16, 2001/$42+m). Other movies scheduled for release in spring 2010 include Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Penguin Group publishing is looking for teen readers where teens are online. Penguin Group has inked a partnership with Piczo, the UK-based teen targeted social networking website, for MyPenguin, a contest that launches this week on the site. Penguin asked some top bands to select their favorite classic book, which of course are Penguin books, and teens are asked to design their own cover art for the books that they can then upload to http://www.piczomypenguin.piczo.com. The bands will be the judges. As for what bands chose what classic novels, here are a few: Ryan Adams selected Dracula; Razorlight’s pick is Great Gatsby; Beck’s is Le Grand Meaulnes; and Dragonette chose Alice in Wonderland.
Nominees and performers for the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards will be announced live on MTV’s TRL, a first, on August 7, 2007, 1-2p. MTV has hinted that someone might perform at the live press conference. The 2007 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from Las Vegas on September 9, 2007 at 9p.
Germany’s RTL II has acquired Nerd Corp Entertainment’s 3D animated comedy/action-adventure series Storm Hawks (52×30), in a deal with rights management company m4e, which holds all rights to the series in German-speaking territories. Targeted to Boys 6-11, RTL II will air Storm Hawks as part of its Pokito action block. Currently airing on in the US on Cartoon Network and in France on France 3, Storm Hawks is set to premiere soon on Canada’s YTV and VRAK and Cartoon Network UK, France, and Latin America. MGM Worldwide Television Distribution has picked up the rights to distribute the series in all territories excluding North America and Western Europe. Spin Master is the master toy licensee for Storm Hawks, and plans to launch the first products this fall 2007.
Entertainment Rights and Compedia, an edutainment publisher and developer, have entered into a partnership to develop and launch a new educational Lassie CD-Rom. Targeted to K4-9, the Lassie CD-Rom includes six interactive games designed to develop cognitive skills. The release is set to roll out for global distribution this fall 2007.
MARKETING/LICENSING
MGA Entertainment has launched a BETA version of its new Be-Bratz ( http://www.Be-Bratz.com) online community, based of course on the Bratz doll line, which coincides with the first Bratz movie opening today. Aimed at girls 6+, the site allows users to create their own Bratz avatar, care for an online pet, chat with others, as well as other customization capabilities. Not unlike Webkinz, to set up a virtual existence on Be-Bratz users will need to make a purchase first. In this case girls need a specific necklace, actually a USB key that provides access to the site, which is available with one of three new Bratz dolls ($30/each) that also come with a pet, working mouse and mouse pad. As for competition for girls, Mattel recently launched its BarbieGirls.com site, and reports having upwards of 3 million registered users, and Viacom has NeoPets, while Disney debuted DisneyFairies.com in January 2007 and now has Club Penguin.
Elsewhere in the virtual world, Smarticlesmart, Inc. also debuts its new social network AnimeMine.com ( http://www.animemine.com) this week. Designed for anime fans, and not specifically aimed at kids, the site offers anime news, reviews and games, and invites users to chat, blog, and upload their own anime-related videos and art.
STONE SOUP
Corrections:
- Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s SVP/Worldwide Sales and Distribution is Ron Scott; as opposed to the name we gave him yesterday.
- The ratings average for Cartoon Network on Saturday, July 21, 2007, 7:30a-1p, should have been K6-11 2.7/16.
