Good morning. It’s Friday, August 31, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The NHL announced its television schedule for the upcoming season (provided labor issues are resolved of course). Entering the second year of their deal, NBC Sports Group is slated to feature over 100 games between NBC and NBC Sports Network this year, including Wednesday night exclusive coverage, the first ever Hockey Day in America tripleheader, the second annual Thanksgiving Friday game, the 2012 Discover NHL Thanksgiving Showdown, and the 2013 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. The season launches with a doubleheader on Thursday, October 11 with a Flyers/Bruins contest at 7p, followed by Blues/Avalanche at 10p on NBC Sports Network, which is slated to carry NHL games three consecutive nights each week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
NHL Network will televise 78 live games for its American audience this season, mainly on Thursday nights and Saturdays, including 14 doubleheaders and three tripleheaders. Regular-season coverage gets underway on Friday, Oct. 12, at 7:30p with Nashville/Detroit.
On the Air
CBS Sports will offer the U.S. Open Tennis Championships starting tomorrow at noon, beginning with men’s and women’s third-round action and running through the men’s singles championship on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 4p. CBS Sports is set to broadcast over 36 hours of coverage with newly named lead play-by-play announcer Bill Macatee joining Mary Carillo and John McEnroe in the booth. Jim Courier returns for his fourth year as analyst and calls the action alongside Ian Eagle. Mary Joe Fernandez serves as reporter. Chris Wragge joins this year serving as a contributor. For the first time, CBS Sports Network features U.S. Open coverage with three days of live Labor Day weekend outer-court action showcasing third and fourth-round matches not shown during CBS Sports’ live simultaneous broadcast.
NBA TV will honor TNT analyst Reggie Miller with a one-hour special as part of the network’s Hall of Fame coverage. Overall, the channel will deliver over 150 hours of programming around the annual event including exclusive carriage of the 2012 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony Presented by BBVA on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7:30p featuring Miller, Don Nelson, Ralph Sampson, Jamaal Wilkes, the All American Red Heads and Katrina McClain. NBA TV will also televise a Hall of Fame Red Carpet Show on Friday, Sept. 7, at 6:30p with host Matt Winer, David Aldridge and Rick Kamla. Miller’s special, Looking Back at Reggie will look at Miller’s career on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 7p.
ESPN named Heather Cox as the network’s weekly Saturday Night Football on ABC sideline reporter. Cox will join Brent Musburger and Kirk Herbstreit for the program. She also inked a multiyear extension with the network where she will continue to work college football, men’s and women’s basketball, NBA and WNBA telecasts across various ESPN outlets.
CBS Sports Network announced that it has bolstered programming with live action from the NBA Development League for the 2012-13 season. Coverage will feature 12 live regular-season games, including two from the 2013 NBA D-League Showcase, as well as 2013 NBA D-League Playoffs and Finals action. The channel will also offer coverage of the “3-Point Shootout” and “Slam Dunk Contest” from the 2013 NBA D-League Showcase.
CBS Sports Network opens the channel’s first official NFL programming on Sunday with two roundtable shows featuring NFL ON CBS announcers. The first, Eye on the NFL: Season Preview, will air at 7p with Jim Nantz as host along with analysts Shannon Sharpe, Dan Marino and Dan Dierdorf. Meanwhile, Eye on the NFL: Hot Topics runs Monday at 7p with host James Brown and analysts Phil Simms, Boomer Esiason and Bill Cowher.
NFL Network announced that America’s Game: 2011 New York Giants will now debut on NFL Network at the new time of 9p on Tuesday instead of originally scheduled time of 10p. Instead, the channel revealed that the NFL GameDay Morning crew will now gather to preview the upcoming season in the 10p hour.
The Sunday MLB on TBS window will be filled this weekend at 1p with American League East Postseason contenders Yankees and Orioles.
GolTV appears to be on the verge of being dropped from DIRECTV, according to a report from the Philadelphia Inquirer. The channel confirmed to the paper DirecTV will be dropping its English-language feed from its service effective September 13, apparently due to the recent addition of beINSport to the lineup.
