Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, August 24, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing. 

Adastra Creative, in indie production company, has been commissioned by the BBC’s CBeebies to produce the new live-action series, Grandpa In My Pocket (26×15).  A comedy, Grandpa In My Pocket revolves around the all important grandparent/grandchild relationship, in this case, Jason, an imaginative 7-year-old grandson and his grumpy Granddad who happens to have a magic shrinking cap.  When Grandpa is small, he is a lot more fun, which also means the two find their way into some mischief.  Adastra Creative founders and series creators, Mellie Buse and Jan Page, will produce the preschool-targeted series, which is scheduled to shoot in Cardiff in 2008.  Special effects for Grandpa In My Pocket will be produced by the Welsh company Dinamo Productions.

CBeebies has also picked up the new animated series 3rd & Bird! (52×30).  Created by Josh Selig, founder creator of The Wonderpets and founder of Little Airplane Productions, 3rd & Bird!, follows a young bird named Samuel Lovebird, who is discovering what it means to be part of a community, including family, friends and neighbors.  Slated to premiere in 2008, the series will be co-produced by CBeebies Productions and Little Airplane Productions, using their “photo-puppetry animation” style.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Stardoll, the virtual fashion doll site aimed at girls 9-17, has entered into an exclusive promotional partnership with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and their mary-kateandashley brand.  Under the deal Stardoll members will be able to adorn their avatars with virtual clothing and accessories. Created specifically for the site by mary-kateandashley brand designs, the items will be available at the Stardoll’s newly launched StarPlaza area.  Additionally, the Olsen sisters will serve as judges for an online fashion show as well as take part in a sweepstakes.  Dualstar will also update Stardoll with promotional video, music and photos of the sisters and their brand.  ( http://www.stardoll.com)

To commemorate the 65th anniversary of Little Golden Books, Classic Media is introducing a new merchandising program across the US and Canada this fall 2007 with products based on Little Golden Books titles and characters from licensees including: Brainytoys Limited (electronic toys); Briarpatch Inc. (puzzles, card games); Galison/Mudpuppy Press (block puzzles, mini-cube puzzles); SaraMax Apparel Group, Inc. (loungewear, sleepwear, layettes); and CSS Industries, Inc. (gift wrap, bags, boxes, tags).  On the publishing side, Random House Children’s Books is set to release several titles in celebration of the 65th anniversary, including an anniversary edition of The Pokey Little Puppy and an anniversary anthology, Little golden Books Boxed Set, as well as a history of the company titled, Golden Legacy: How Golden Won Children’s Hearts, Changed Publishing Forever, and Became an American Icon Along the Way (October 2007).

Tennis star Venus Williams and retailer Steve & Barry’s have inked a deal to introduce EleVEn by Venus Williams, a new collection designed of classic, active lifestyle and performance fashions, on-court as well as casual footwear, accessories, etc. The signature item in the line is the “V-Court,” an on-court sneaker. Williams will debut the V-Court during her matches at the US Open next week.  The line, which includes 120 different pieces, will be available exclusively at Steve & Barry’s stores for the holiday season this November.  All items will be prices $19.98 and under. As for the name, Williams said EleVen comes from the address of the home where she first lived in California, together with her family.

RATINGS

CartoonNetwork.com set a new record high in July 2007, when visitors to the site spent an average of 77 minutes on the cable network’s website, up from its previous best of 71 minutes in 2004, per to Nielsen/NetRatings.  Cartoon Network also reports that www.cartoonnetwork.com ranked 26th among all US domains in total time spent in July.  Nielsen/NetRatings recently started reporting the Total Minutes and Total Sessions metrics to NetView, its syndicated internet audience measurement service.
