Facebook unveiled its new “Places” location-based “check in” feature to U.S. users as promised, already rolling out as part of the newly updated iPhone Facebook app or through any mobile browser at touch.facebook.com. The service allows users to check in to local businesses, a la Gowalla, or to other addresses to share their locations, status updates or photos with their Facebook pals. An optional “People Here Now” feature also allows users to find others who have logged in nearby. Microsoft’s Bing Maps is powering the location feature in Places and Facebook has released a Read API to allow third party developers to build apps around the service. Privacy concerns are already surfacing, however, with the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California complaining that there is no way to completely opt out and prevent your friends from checking you in. (The way the system currently works, you can choose “not now” when someone checks you in, but not “never.”)
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Warner Bros. Television Group’s Studio 2.0 has created a slate of new online shows, being distributed by online video syndication company AlphaBird and featured on Dailymotion‘s video sharing site:

  • Downers Grove” tells the story of four friends in their early 20s who never grew up
  •  “ High Drama 2: Against All Oz” follows the Bethlehem, Pa. Freedom High School Theatre Co. for another season as they stage a production of The Wizard of Oz
  • Exposed ” is a thriller about an Ivy League pre-med student who must suddenly carry out increasingly perilous tasks or risk exposure of his shocking past
  • Chadam ” revolves around a protagonist with unique psychic powers who must save his town from a maniacal serial killer

        
GSN is launching season two of Jerry Springer-hosted “Baggage” with new online features, including a series of digital segments featuring celebrity gossip maven Perez Hilton. Perez will host the complementary Perez Hilton’s Baggage Report, eight weekly segments to be featured online and on air commenting on and highlighting some of the best and worst “baggage featured in season two.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Honk is a new socially aware automotive shopping site that recommends cars based on your likes and lifestyle. In addition to reviews, extensive data and localized pricing info, Honk provides a personalized “Dashboard” that is part discovery engine, part database that takes into account your personal preferences and values to match you with your dream ride. Handy Facebook integration also enables you to solicit feedback from your friends.
 
The WGA, East is hosting its first “Web Series Summer Camp” on Saturday, Aug. 28 in New York as part of its digital media-themed Writer’s Guild 2.0 initiative. The one-day pow-wow, open to WGA members and non-members alike, will provide a crash course on planning, producing, monetizing and distributing a web series.
 
Global digital media company and bilingual content producer Terra announced it is hosting the Terra Music Fest on Oct. 3 with headliners Nelly Furtado and Fefe Dobson. The concert will stream live on Terra’s Live & Loud online music platform.

Blackberry maker Research in Motion is looking to acquire a mobile ad network of its own and has been in talks with Baltimore-based Millennial Media about acquiring the company, per the WSJ.
 
Ad supported free texting app textPlus introduced its “Chartbuster” program designed to help developers improve their apps’ standing and visibility on the Apple iTunes App Store. 
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Intel Corp. announced its biggest takeover in its history with the $7.68 billion acquisition of computer-security software maker McAfee Inc. The company is best known for its antivirus software and has been focusing its recent energies on expanding into the mobile market.
 
Television search and monitoring software company SnapStream Media has restructured its software to enable unlimited recording and storage capacity of television content for media customers. Its latest version removes the former limit of recording 10 television shows at once to allow multiple SnapStream Tuner Nodes to be clustered together, supplying virtually limitless recording bandwidth.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
The iPad took another step toward being the most useful mobile television device since the battery operated black and white. Verizon announced it is working on an iPad app that will allow FiOS TV subscribers to stream live TV to their iPads by connected it to their FiOS set-top boxes. The app will expand upon a service that allows FiOS subscribers to watch on demand shows and movies. Unfortunately, users will have to be within their own home to view the channels. The list of TV apps for the iPad is growing – Netflix, ABC, MLB, Hulu Dish Network, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and HBO have all either launched iPad apps or are working on them.

Data mobility solutions provider Solzon Corporation named Brian Kolek as President and CTO as well as sole owner of the corporation. Brian was previously VP and co-owner of the company and has purchased the equity interest of partner Philip Przybyszewski.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Because everyone likes to see what the hottest viral videos of the moment are in America, YouTube has introduced a new feature called YouTube Charts that tracks the most viewed, most subscribed to and most liked videos of the day, week, month, or of all time. (“All Time” always sounds kind of funny, as if it goes back to the Lumiere Brothers days.) Nevertheless, it’s a very useful resource and a wonderful way to take the pulse of the online video world at any given time. The feature also helps remind viewers that YouTube is the center of the (amateur) video universe on the web, a fact the company is forever cognizant of. Google is always trying to remind producers and audiences alike it appreciates them in a bid to get them to remain loyal to the site. (It strikes egalitarian tones well.) Just yesterday, YouTube reminded Promoted Videos advertisers who create videos to help drive traffic to their content that even they have the chance to make it on the coveted YouTube homepage, which movie studios pay handsomely to appear on. This blog post givens tips on how to make sure your video is considered for this honor.
