As an ongoing feature, Cynopsis will be including a series of Q&As asking interesting people in our industry five questions. This new feature begins today with Robert DeBitetto, President/GM at A&E Network and BIO Channel.
Thank you for speaking with us, Robert. You have been with A&E since January 2003 and under your leadership the network has transformed into a top 10-rated one. Please relate a pinnacle moment for you.
Back in the “early days” of our reinvention, 2004, we wanted to do something provocative, something unexpected that would shake it up, get the attention of the viewers and the industry and signal that everything you thought you knew about A&E was about to change. At that time, the average age of the A&E viewer was 61 (no, that’s not a typo!) which was our first great challenge. I felt I knew how to do entertainment programming, how to develop and produce shows that would appeal to a much younger audience. What I didn’t know was whether the patient was too far gone. Was the audience so old that it would be impossible to use the platform to speak to a younger generation?
Well, in summer of 2004 we made our play, and premiered two “reality” series: Dog the Bounty Hunter and Growing Up Gotti. The impact was immediate and explosive. Both series debuted to massive audiences, something like 4 times the then-average; even more important, the delivery of adults 18-49 and 25-54 was huge, multiples of what the network had ever seen. And, the median age overnight for those two shows hovered around 40 years old!
That was my “ah-ha” moment. The patient was alive, it wasn’t too late, and we never looked back. It was just like Field of Dreams… “If you build it, they will come… “
A&E was born in 1984 originally as a commercial counterpart to PBS then a shift occurred to attract younger viewers which ushered in reality programming. A renewed push back to original scripted dramas is currently underway (A&E has The Glades, Longmire and the recently announced Bates Motel). What will A&E’s programming lineup be comprised of in the next few years?
Scripted series are an important, strategic and growing part of our overall program strategy. Executed well, these shows drive CPM increases, serve as key real estate for sales packaging and smart integrations, and in success can be powerful brand builders. As we know, they usually get a (sometimes, anyway) unfair share of the media’s attention. They’re also critical to our effort to attract “blue chip” dollars away from broadcast. This has contributed to our exceptional ad sales growth in recent years. And, I love a well-written and well-acted drama!
Having said that, the real backbone of A&E’s success has and will continue to be great non-fiction (“reality TV” if you like) series: Intervention, First 48, Storage Wars, Duck Dynasty, and so on, and so on. Today, the top reality series (Jersey Shore, Pawn Stars, Storage Wars) are absolutely among the top-rated original series in all of cable. And, with a cost structure and ownership model that’s far more attractive than that of the studio-produced scripted hours, you can see what a powerful part of our business these shows are.
Going forward, I expect that our prime schedule will be made up of about 90% non-fiction series, and possibly up to 10% original scripted dramas, maybe up to 4 series in any 12 month period. And, not to bury the lead, by sometime next year A&E will have gotten out of the syndicated or “rented” series business in primetime for the first time ever! We’d rather invest our dollars in original, exclusive, branded entertainment that we own and control.
We know you have a personal interest in art, especially in contemporary works. If you could take up a paintbrush how would you, figuratively speaking, interpret the landscape of commercial cable TV in the years to come? (Would it come out like Edvard Munch’s The Scream or become a more serene landscape like Monet’s Water Lilies?)
Wow… that may be the most creative question I’ve ever been asked! Sitting through some development meetings, I definitely do feel like screaming, like I’m trapped in Munch’s masterpiece!
The TV business has become incredibly dynamic; change is really the only constant. The growth of time-shifted viewing, non-linear consumption, “over-the-top” players, authentication, second screen use, watch apps and social media all present enormous challenges and stress on the traditional economic model, but also enormous opportunity. It’s definitely an exciting and creative time to be in the business, but it’s not for the faint of heart. Look at the late 15th Century masterpiece by Hieronymus Bosch, “The Garden of Earthly Delights,” which really depicts an insane version of Heaven and Hell. That’s our business today!
Robert, you graduated Phi Betta Kappa with honors from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and you also hold a law degree from the UCLA School of Law. Did you have a different career path in mind and what attracted you to television and more specifically to cable TV?
First, if I’m being honest, I never really had a career path or a “plan.” Still don’t! But, I always loved film, great writing and acting (I studied acting/drama a bit in school: actually wasn’t too terrible. It comes in handy in my job as a network head sometimes in fact!). I went to law school primarily to put off getting a real job. I suppose it was inevitable that over time I would migrate to first film and then television. I love both mediums. However, today, television can be a remarkably solid business; not sure I can say the same for the movie business right now. Cable, to me, really represents the best of what’s possible in television right now. It’s where I feel the most creative work is being done. We’re better at building brands than broadcast, and if you can marry great branding with great programming, great entertainment, you can really super-serve your fans and viewers. If you do that in a disciplined business model, the results can be lucrative as well.
As an L.A. transplant living in NYC now for many years, you have found things and places to love about NYC – after a typical work-week, how do you unwind on a Friday night?
You’re right, I consider both coasts home, and I think I’m maybe the exception to the rule in that I take both LA and NYC on their own terms, love both, and try to enjoy what each has to offer. Now that we spend most of our time in downtown Manhattan (we live in TriBeCa), on most Friday nights you can find me with my wife, Caroline, sitting at one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants (nothing too fancy, maybe Odeon in TriBeCa or Sant Ambroeus in the West Village), always sitting outside whenever we can, drinking a shamelessly good bottle of red wine, and watching the show that is New York walk by… Cheers!
Four cable operators gained approval from the US Department of Justice on its $3.9 billion sale of wireless spectrum to Verizon Wireless. Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks agreed in December to sell their 122 Advanced Wireless Spectrum licenses, held in a separate entity called SpectrumCo, to Verizon. The deal also included a co-marketing component between the cable operators and Verizon valued at $3.6 billion. In a separate deal, Cox Communications also agreed to sell its AWS spectrum to Verizon for $325 million. As part of the deal, Verizon had to agree to several concessions. One example has Verizon agreeing to not sell cable products in markets where Verizon Communications’ FiOS TV service is sold. Another concession example has Verizon agreeing to form a technology research and development joint venture with the cable operators. The FCC is expected to approve the deal.
A retransmission agreement in principle over fees has been reached between Dish Network and Sinclair Broadcast Group. The agreement will have Dish delivering TV content of Sinclair’s to its customers. This deal came before Thursday when Dish customers were warned they could lose access to some of their channels such as ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX. This new agreement in principle extends their existing deal for two weeks after which both entities are expected to hammer out a long-lasting solution. Dish serves 14.1 million TV subscribers in the US while Sinclair owns or services 74 broadcast TV stations in 45 markets.
Apparently, Apple has talked with Time Warner Cable and other large cable operators about creating an Apple-developed set-top box that would allow subscribers access TV programming, according to The Wall Street Journal. Apple has to date not made any deals with any MSOs, says WSJ.
Nationally syndicated Dog the Bounty Hunter, distributed by Trifecta Entertainment & Media will move from a weekend hour to a strip format for the 2012-23 broadcast season beginning this September. Dog the Bounty Hunter can also be stacked on weekends. The program has been cleared on stations in more than 80% of US television households. Stations airing the program include WCBS-WLNY/New York, KDOC/Los Angeles, WCIU-WCUU/Chicago; Tribune stations KDAF/Dallas, KIAH/Houston and WXIN-WTTV/Indianapolis; Lin Broadcasting has cleared the strip on WCTX-WTNH/Hartford, KWBQ-KASY/Albuquerque, KXAN-KBVO/Austin and WPRI-WNAC/Providence; Hearst stations KCRA-KQCA in Sacramento, WKCF-WESH/Orlando and KCWE/Kansas City have also licensed the series. Other station groups clearing the series are Sinclair Broadcast Group, Weigel Broadcasting, Local, Gannett, Roberts and Newport. Trifecta Entertainment & Media also handles all ad sales for Dog the Bounty Hunter.

Starring Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids), Family Tree centers on a recently jobless and single 30-something guy who begins investigating his family lineage after receiving a mysterious box from a great aunt he never met. This uncovers a number of unusual stories about his ancestors which help him establish an identity. Guest and co-EP Jim Piddock will appear on the series which will also air on BBC2. Karen Murphy is also on board as co-producer. HBO has not stated when Family Tree will premiere.
AMC has two new unscripted original series in the works, both sporting working titles, with one referred to as Untitled Taxidermy Series and the second one is using the title Venice Beach Freakshow. AMC also renewed its unscripted series The Pitch for a second season that focuses on advertising agencies as they prepare for a campaign pitch to win a major account. Produced by Studio Lambert, The Pitch was approved for eight one-hour episodes for season two which will debut in second quarter 2013.
Production has commenced on GMC TV’s The Bulloch Family Ranch, a docu-drama about the Bulloch family who raises 25 teenagers in need. Former Monk star Tony Shalhoub has joined the cast of CBS’ now untitled comedy (formerly Ex-Men) from How I Met Your Mother EP Rob Greenberg. The plot is about a charming young man (Chris Smith) who after being left at the altar by his fiancée moves into a short-term housing complex and makes friends with the group of divorced guys who live there. Shalhoub will play Frank, a four-time divorced man who still thinks he is attractive to the ladies.
For the second season of BET’s Reed Between the Lines three have been added to the cast that is headlined by Malcolm-Jamal Warner as Alex. Joining are Tony Rock, Charlie Robinson and Michole White. Rock will play Julius Darren, Alex’s oldest friend; White will play Simone Winters, a single doctor who is tired of hearing how she intimidates men; and Robinson will play Alex’s nonsensical father, Monroe Reed.
Toronto-based Proper Television has commenced production on a new original competition series, Last Car Standing for Discovery Channel Canada. Filming will happen until next month in Ontario and the series will premiere in winter 2013.
