Good morning. It’s Friday, August 17, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing. 

Viacom’s Nickelodeon announced plans to limit the use of its licensed characters on food packaging to those products “that meet the ‘better for you’ criteria as established by marketing partners in accordance with governmental dietary guidelines,” in a letter to several US congressional representatives and members of the FCC, including Sen. Ed Markey (D  Mass) who also serves as the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet, from Nickelodeon President Cyma Zarghami, per the New York Times.  The plan, which will go into effect from January 2009 as current deals run out, will allow Nickelodeon’s characters to be featured on a limited range of “occasional treats” for special celebratory events such as birthdays and holidays.  While the actual parameters of what will qualify as “better for you” product has yet to be illustrated, many are giving Nickelodeon kudos for the move, which comes on the heals of the almost dozen food/beverage companies that have pledged to cease advertising less healthy food products to kids under 12, as well as comparable commitments from Disney and Discovery Kids.

This week marks the launch of High School Playbook ( http://www.highschoolplaybook.com ), Hearst-Argyle Television’s new multi-platform service that will provide high school sporting event information and coverage.  High School Playbook will rely on a mix of professional TV stations, content from regular folks, as well as a network of trained student journalists, referred to as “Sideline Reporters,” who will be outfitted with Canon Hv20 HD camcorders.  Covering 10 different men’s and women’s sports, High School Playbook will feature school game schedules, athlete profiles and school comparisons, as well as game-day weather reports, scores and bloopers.  The service makes its initial debut in seven of Hearst-Argyle’s 26 markets: KCRA/Sacramento; WTAE/Pittsburgh; and WBAL/Baltimore, which beginning this week will provide High School Playbook features within their existing YouTube Channels.  Meanwhile, WESH/Orlando; WLWT/Cincinnati; WYFF/Greenville/Spartanburg; and WXII/Greensboro/Winston-Salem, are starting YouTube pages with High School Playbook content.

MARKETING/LICENSING

MGA Entertainment debuts its MyePet virtual world, Rescue Pets: Myepets.com, live online.  Targeted to kids 4 and up, users can enter the secret code, which comes with the purchase of a plush pet, the site lets kids adopt, name and care for online pets with an eye to encourage decision-making skills.  Users can also travel from their MyPet’s My Room to other areas to play and “buy” what they need for their virtual experience (e.g. decorations, clothing, accessories).

Teen actress Amanda Bynes has teamed with retailer Steve & Barry’s to launch dear, a new apparel, accessory, and footwear line they developed together.  The dear product line, which includes 220 items all under $20, is available exclusively at Steve & Barry’s.  Bynes plans to make in-store appearances in the coming months.

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) has tapped Dimensional Branding Group as the exclusive licensing agency for the PlayStation brand, first party software title characters and related intellectual property for use on branded merchandise.  DBG will work with SCEA’s newly formed licensing group, headed by Shelly Gayner, the Director/Licensing and Business Development.  John Leonhardt, President/DBG, will lead the DBG PlayStation licensing team.

HIT Entertainment appointed Singapore-based FCI Brands Pte. Ltd. to rep its preschool portfolio in Southeast Asia, including Thomas & Friends, Bob the Builder, Barney & Friends, and Pingu.  The territories covered are Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Brunei, and Vietnam.  FCI Brands currently reps Turner Entertainment, PAWS Inc, and MGA Entertainment.

Jakks Pacific has inked a Master Toy and Activities licensing deal with Nelvana Enterprises for the preschool series Max & Ruby.  Under the agreement, Child Guidance preschool division and Flying Colors activity division of Jakks will develop, manufacture, and distribute a line of toys and related products based on the Max & Ruby property across a range of categories including plush, preschool learning, figures, foam puzzles, and craft activities among others.  The Max & Ruby products are slated to launch in 2008.  The TV series airs in the US on Nick Jr. and Noggin.

WizKids Inc., will release the next installment of its Star Wars PocketModel Trading Card Game – Ground Assault this October 2007.  The new Star Wars Booster pack features Star Wars ground vehicles with new ground and space PocketModel units, and of course new playing cards, which include new characters.  The initial star Wars PocketModel game sets were released in June 2007.

The Sorpresa! Network will be a partner and sponsor of the Hamptons International Film Festival, being held October 17-21, 2007. The network will sign on to a signature program titled Sorpresa! Youth Film Competition for K6-17 as part of the festival’s Youth Media Program.
