Cynopsis: Kids!
08/10/12
Good morning. It’s Friday, August 10, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.
Cartoon Network adds a twist to its TV Everywhere efforts with the launch of the free CN 2.0, a new version of its Cartoon Network app, which allows kids to simultaneously videos (show episodes, clips, network schedule) and play games on iOS devices. Earlier this summer Cartoon Network launched live streaming of its TV programming via CartoonNetwork.com and iOS devices. In addition to all of the features of the original Cartoon Network app, the CN 2.0 also includes exclusive games and collectibles. Specifically for the iPad the new CN 2.0 uses an interface that allows kids to watch videos and play games at the same time, or do one or the other simply by rotating the tablet (check out how it works here http://toonview.turner.com/View/2a1f042o2e1m072x2c2r). The iPhone and iPod touch versions include all the same content and also allows users to watch and play in the same app, although not simultaneously. The CN 2.0 app offers a selection of Cartoon Network series including Adventure Time, Ben 10 and Regular Show, along with games such as Adventure Time’s Adventure Masters and Ben 10’s Null Void: Escape Velocity. Additionally, the app includes a feature called DNA Lab that allows users to create virtual collector cards from resources they earn by watching episodes and playing games in the app.
The Random House Group, the UK-based division of Random House, establishes Random House Enterprises (RHE), a new unit that will seek out new multi-platform business opportunities. Based in London, RHE will look to expand The Random House Group’s content and intellectual property across TV, licensing and merchandising, gaming and live events around the world. Jo Edwards is appointed as Head of Licensing, RHE and will report to Nigel Waters, Group Commercial Director of The Random House Group. She previously toiled for 11 years for Discovery Communications, most recently as VP/International Consumer Products, Discovery Communications. In addition, Chloe Johnson-Hill, previously Publicity Director at Random House imprints Jonathan Cape and Bodley Head, has joined the RHE team as Manager, RHE (Events).
CBBC (UK) commissions the new original kid’s drama series The Knot (3×30) from Lime Pictures. Currently filming in the Isle of Man, The Knot will debut this fall 2012 on CBBC. The three-part drama revolves around a group of foster kids that come to live in the rugged terrain near the Irish Sea with a family and their two kids, and stars Debra Stephenson, Mark Moraghan and Kelle Bryan with several up and coming kids. The Knot is produced by Lime Pictures in association with CinemaNX and with the support of Isle of Man Film. The Knot is executive produced by Lime Pictures’ Creative Director Tony Wood and Sue Nott for CBBC. Directed by Dirk Campbell, all three episodes were written by Nick Leather (Hollyoaks). Lime Pictures is a subsidiary of All3Media.
The puppet alien ALF (Gordon Shumway who gets his nickname from the acronym for Alien Life Form) is headed to the big screen in a mixed CG and live action movie from Sony Pictures Animation, which has picked up the rights to the 1980s sitcom, per Heat Vision. The new movie will be produced by Jordan Kerner (The Smurfs and The Smurfs 2 movies, The Mighty Ducks, Inspector Gadget among others) along with ALF TV series creators Tom Patchett and puppeteer, and voice of ALF, Paul Fusco. Executive producing the picture are Ben Haber of Kerner Entertainment and Kenneth Kaufman. Kaufman heads up Alien Productions with Patchett and Fusco, who together own the rights to ALF. The original ALF TV series is currently airing on The Hub TV Network. In addition to the original ALF (102 episodes) live action/puppet series that ran in Primetime on NBC, there was also an animated ALF TV series that ran as part of NBC’s Saturday morning block in the late 1980s.
