Good morning. It’s Friday, August 10, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing. 

This week marks the launch of Discovery Familia, a new family-centric Spanish-language channel, in the US on DirecTV Mas.  During the daytime Discovery Familia will offer programming targeted to preschoolers such as Hi-5, Pokoyo and Animal Jam.  In the evenings the channel features content for children and women, focusing on travel, health/nutrition and design topics, including a show called Bizzare Foods, which will pretty much travel the world looking for peculiar and exotic foods.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Shape-shifting robots continue to entice Hollywood as the Fox based production entity New Regency teams with the Mark Gordon Company to produce movie adaptation of Voltron: Defender of the Universe, the 1980s anime TV series, and possibly as a franchise, according to Variety.  Justin Marks is writing the script.  Gordon is also working on movie versions of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and Green Arrow.  Sure he was more of a soup can meets oil barrel than a shape-shifter, but I say bring back TOBOR the Great (1954/Republic Pictures).

MORE KIDS STUFF

MTV Networks has entered into an agreement with Alltel Wireless, which will offer a selection of programming, including on-demand mobile video, WAP sites, games and personalization features, from MTV, Nickelodeon, The N and Comedy Central, as well as other MTVN companies. 

Disney Channel will feature fairytale themed episodes of its series Little Einsteins, Monday-Friday the week of September 10, 2007 at 9a.   The week concludes with the debut of a new Little Einsteins episode, Little Red Rockethood, on Friday, September 14.

Season three of Life With Derek will air Fridays at 6:30p on Canada’s Family Channel from Friday, September 7.  The network will offer a broadband preview of the first episode of the season September 3-6 at family.ca.  Produced by Shaftesbury Films in association with Family Channel, a fourth season Life With Derek begins production this September.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Vivendi Games’ Sierra Entertainment announced development of The Spiderwick Chronicles video game based on the upcoming Paramount and Nickelodeon Films movie of the same name, set for release in early 2008, which in turn is based on the series of kid books by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi.  The Spiderwick Chronicles video game is in development at Stormfront Studios and will be available for Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS and PC in February 2008 in conjunction with the debut of the movie.

Sony Online Entertainment and Virgin Comics, Sir Richard Branson and Deepak Chopra’s venture, have joined to create a massively multiplayer online game based on the comic book Ramayan 3392 A.D., which is based on an ancient Indian legend.  Under the exclusive multi-year license deal, SOE will develop and publish the MMO, which will initially be released for PC.

Tom Brady, the QB for the New England Patriots, will be the cover athlete for Humongous, Inc.‘s video game Backyard Football ’08.  Backyard Sports fans voted Brady as their favorite NFL player in a poll conducted by Humongous.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Nique Fajors has joined Capcom as VP/Marketing.  In his new position, Fajors will oversee all elements of marketing for Capcom in North America, which includes product marketing, creative services and public relations.  Previously, Fajors served as VP/Sales and Marketing, Atari.

RATINGS

Toon Disney earned its most watched day on record this past Monday, August 8, 2007 in key demos, delivering K2-11 282,000 and K6-11 184,000.  The day included the Toon Disney premiere of the movie The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl (5-7p) delivering K2-11 718,000 and K6-11 518,000, up by 80% and 90% respectively versus the same time period last year, making it the network’s top rated movie telecast ever.
