Cynopsis: Kids!

04/04/08

Good morning. It’s Friday, April 4, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

UPFRONT 2008-2009 SEASON – CARTOON NETWORK

With the lights down, fog pouring in and a little John Williams fanfare, it was all about The Force at Cartoon Network’s annual upfront presentation in NYC yesterday, where George Lucas, escorted by four Clone Troopers and his theme music, was in attendance to show off a clip and talk about his new CGI animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which will bow on the network this fall 2008, following Warner Bros.’ North American theatrical release Friday, August 15. You may recall that Star Wars: The Clone Wars will also air on TNT, after bowing on Cartoon Network. Cartoon Network also announced it has picked up a second season of the animated series Chowder (for a total of 40×30), and is developing a follow-up to its live-action movie Ben 10: Race Against Time. Additionally, Cartoon Network unveiled its “two-pronged, 360-degree” programming plan for 2008-9, which will feature two nights of the network’s programming (Fridays and Thursdays), a Sunday night movie plan, its new short-form development initiative and the network’s ongoing pro-social efforts:

  • Friday nights will feature an all fantasy/adventure line-up with Star Wars: The Clone Wars serving as the anchor for the night, which will be joined by the new animated series from Warner Bros. Animation, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Ben 10: Alien Force, and the previously announced The Secret Saturdays (26×30).
  • Thursday nights will be devoted to comedy and will feature the animated series Chowder (including new season), as well as existing series, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Camp Lazlo and George of the Jungle. Thursday night will also serve as a launch pad for new series, including the debut this summer of the original series, The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack. Based on the clips they showed, Flapjack has a great look, with cut-out style animation incorporated into the show and beautiful backgrounds.
  • Meanwhile on Sunday nights Cartoon Network will be looking for a family audience with a new Sunday night movie franchise (title TBA). Set to launch in June, the movie block will include the TV premiere of titles including Ant Bully, Hoodwinked, Monster house and Open Season, and network debuts of movies such as Kicking and Screaming.
  • The Cartoonstitute is the new development incubator, where Chief Content Officer, Rob Sorcher explained, some 150 visually diverse short-form programs will be produced over the course of 20 months. Helmed by artist/executive producer Craig McCracken (The Powerpuff Girls, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends) and supervising producer Rob Renzetti (My Life as a Teenage Robot, Dexter’s Laboratory), The Cartoonstitute other mission is to cultivate an in-house group of artists, directors, writers and storyboard artist to create content across multiple platforms.
  • Finally, under the Get Animated initiative, Cartoon Network is partnering again with the Food and Drug Administration to further their joint educational campaign Spot The Block, which encourages kids to read and understand food labels. The new online and on-air Spot The Block effort bows this Monday, April 7.
  • OK, so a little more on Star Wars: The Clone Wars for those Star Wars fans. Lucas spoke a bit about the animation style of the new series and where their inspiration came from. Basically, Lucas said that they were going for a mix of anime and feature film style, and looked to Gerry Anderson’s Thunderbirds TV series for inspiration. Lucas continued, explaining that they were working with characters that the world knows, and that they had to, “come up with very sophisticated and dynamic caricatures of those people.” And yes, there are new characters, both bad guys as well as a new 10/11-year old girl padawan character for Anakin.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Lionsgate has begun production on the family-aimed CGI animated film Alpha and Omega, the first picture under its multi-picture deal with India’s Crest Animation Productions. Scheduled for release in 2010, Lionsgate and Crest are co-financing and co-producing the movie. Pre and post-production on the movie is taking place in LA, with key animation being produced at Crest Animation Studios in India. Alpha and Omega revolves around two young and very different wolves that are taken from their home and together will do anything to get back to their pack. The cast stars the voices of Justin Long and Hayden Panetierre in the lead roles, as well as Christina Ricci, Danny Glover, Dennis Hopper and Larry Miller. Anthony Bell (The Boondocks, Rugrats) and Ben Gluck (Brother Bear 2) are directing the movie from a screenplay by Chris Denk, which in turn is based on an original story by Steve Moore (co-creator Open Season). Lionsgate will distribute the film in North America and the UK, with Mandate International handling international sales for the rest of the world, excluding India.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Univision Network is set to launch Planeta U (Planet U), a kid-targeted Saturday morning programming block (8-11a) this Saturday, April 5, 2008. The educational/informational focused block will feature programming for different kid demos: For preschoolers Dora the Explorer, Go Diego, Go!, and Pinky Dinky Doo; for K4-8 – Jakers!; For Kids/Tweens 8-12 – Inspector Gadget’s Field Trip; and for Teens 13-16 – is Beakman’s World. Planet U will also feature segments promoting literacy, problem-solving skills, respect/self-esteems and pride in the Hispanic identity. Additionally, Hispanic celebrities will provide messaging on the environment among other topics.

After several months of negotiations, Jetix Europe N.V. inks a multi-year carriage renewal deal with CANALSAT (France).

Chorion’s The Mr. Men Show (52×11) will premiere in France on France 5 on April 12. The series, which recently launched on Cartoon Network US and Five UK, has also been acquired by ABC (Australia), HOP! (Israel) and Tiji (France).

Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) will debut Japanese anime channel, Animax, in Spain from April 12. It will initially be available to more than 500,000 subscribers through Telefonica Espana’s IPTV operator Imagenio. SPTI is in advanced talks with other pay-tv operators regarding additional carriage.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Xilam has completed new licensing deals for its animated series Oggy and the Cockroaches (200×7, or 65×30): Jemini (plush toys) will produce 12 different plush products based on the series characters’, which will be available at retail in France in June 2008; Benjamin SA (socks) – products to be available in June. Xilam is also in the works on an Oggy DVD Christmas special, to be produced by France Television Distribution, as well as a video game for K7-14 for several platforms. Season 3 of Oggy and the Cockroaches will debut on French pay TV broadcaster Canal +, in fall 2008, and has already been picked up by broadcasters including Mediaset (Italy), VRT (Belgium), MTV Oy (Finland) and Noga (Israel).

Like OMG! Unilever’s Degree Deodorant recruited singer and Disney’s High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale for a user generated online campaign. From April 1 through May 26, fans can visit www.DegreeGirl.com to catch up on Ashley’s latest news, share their own OMG! moments via video or post their stories to the online blog form to enter Degree Girl’s Ultimate OMG! Contest where teens have the opportunity to meet Ashley herself.

STONE SOUP

Hang onto your lunch trays; ABC TV is launching a nationwide casting search for the new summer reality series, High School Musical: Summer Session. The series is scheduled to premiere on ABC on Sunday, July 20 (8-9p) and will air Sundays and Mondays (8-9p) for three weeks, continuing then on Mondays (8p) through the middle of September. So, if you are 16-22 you could have a chance and can download an application and requirements at www.abc.com/hsmsummersession. There will be two casting calls, one in Southern California (details TBA), and the other at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida on May 7 (further details TBA). In addition to these two open calls, casting scouts from the show will be searching the country looking for unknown talent to vie for a chance to try out for this new reality series.
