Cynopsis: DIGITAL
04/30/10
Good morning, it’s Friday, April 30, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Google is working on an offshoot of its Android operating system to act as an application platform for set-top boxes and broadband-connected TVs, per the WSJ. The solution, which will be officially unveiled at the Google I/O Developers conference in May, is already attracting interest from electronics and chip manufacturers including Sony and Intel. There are already several competing parties vying to create a standard App Store environment for the television including Yahoo, Vudu and DivX but fragmentation and confusion among consumers and electronics retailers has slowed adoption so far.
Twentieth Century Fox‘s “Avatar” sold 6.7 million DVDs and 2.7 million Blu-rays (a new record) during its first 4 days of release, well on its way to becoming the top selling movie in both formats. Not surprisingly, the Blu-ray version of the movie was also illegally downloaded a record 200,000+ times during its first 4 days, according to TorrentFreak, despite its huge 10GB file size.
Bravo is partnering with live video platform Ustream to stream a social get together around the premiere of the new season of The Real Housewives of New Jersey. Andy Cohen will be the point person on Twitter and Facebook during the premiere party, beginning Monday, May 3 at 8:30 pm (a new night for the Jersey Housewives.)
Hey, hey, hey. Bill Cosby’s long-running animated show Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids has launched on the iTunes store from Classic Media. Season one (36 episodes), which debuted on CBS in 1972, is currently available for $29.99 with individual episodes priced at $1.99.
Mobile marketing is beginning to spark advertisers’ interest but if they want to play on the iPhone and iPad they’re going to have to pay handsomely for the privilege. Marketers are being charged a premium to maintain a presence on Apple‘s new iAd platform, according to the WSJ. Inaugural rates are being set at 5-10 times higher than typical mobile ad rates and marketers who want to participate in the launch of the platform could pay up to $10 million. Apple is also making it clear that it plans to maintain a sizeable amount of control over how the creative is delivered, which is rankling some creative directors. The upside for publishers is that higher rates will also trickle down to them, as they get to keep 60% of the revenue generated on the platform.
Mobile advertising company InMobi introduced a new solution offering advertisers automated, cost per acquisition or CPA-based performance tracking to improve ROI for their mobile advertising campaigns. InMobi’s AdROIt solution allows advertisers to track mobile advertising campaign objectives such as reviews on a new digital camera or requests for hotel rates on a cost per acquisition (CPA) basis and then link performance metrics to a myriad of influences including the advertising creative, publisher, and consumer targeting details.
Digital out-of-home network Access 360 Media has acquired Arena Media Networks creating a combined network of 20K+ screens reaching more than 54 million consumers/month in all top 100 DMAs. AMN screens are located in sports and entertainment venues including Madison Square Garden, Yankee Stadium, Wrigley Field and Dodger Stadium.
“Avatar,” and Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” helped giant screen exhibitor Imax Corp. earn a much-improved $26.6 million in profit during Q1, compared to a loss of $2.6 million a year ago. Revenue more than doubled to a record $72.8 million from $33.1 million Q1 2009. The company expects the hits to keep on coming, adding new theaters and bringing a slate of big new pictures, including “Iron Man 2”, “Shrek Forever After”, “Toy Story 3” and “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” Imax also announced a deal with Warner Bros. to distribute up to 20 movies in the format through 2013, including “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” parts one and two, “Happy Feet 2”, “Batman 3” and “Superman”.
In a sign that Apple has taken a real PR hit over iPhone-gate, Jon Stewart – an avowed Mac fan – weighed in on Apple’s draconian efforts to recover its iPhone prototype and punish the perpetrators in his Wed. Daily Show telecast. He even coined a new phrase to describe the company: “Appholes.”
Apple CEO Steve Jobs went on the offensive about his dislike of Adobe’s Flash in the most demonstrative terms yet in a new blog post on the subject. His “Thoughts on Flash” tome criticizes the technology’s proprietary nature, its reliability, security and performance track record and its lack of experience with touch interfaces. But his biggest gripe is that Flash puts a barrier between Apple and software developers, meaning that developers can take advantage of improvements from Apple only after Adobe upgrades its own software.
Global mobile content retailer Mobile Streams has signed a deal with European Ringback Tone specialist Muzicall to distribute a range of content through Muzicall’s distribution channels in the UK, Switzerland, Portugal and The Netherlands.
Pets United, a company that began by aggregating pet-themed retail sites such as Dog.com and Petsupplies.com, has rebranded itself TABcom to reflect a widening range of sites including lifestyle, garden and eco-conscious brands. TABcom has licensed more than 5,000 domain names but only 15 are currently active.
Research company Kantar Media is introducing internet ad network competitive tracking reporting, promising detailed insights into companies, advertisers and products running on what have been up until now hard-to-fathom ad networks. Kantar monitors ad network advertising across 4,500 national and local sites in the U.S. and Canada and will break down results by categories, product and parent company. The NHL rolled out its first dedicated iPad app – “NHL Ice Time – Playoff Edition,” just in time for the second round of the playoffs. Co-developed with video streaming partner NeuLion, the iPad app will deliver live scores, stats, highlights, live audio and a condensed 12 min. video versions of each game, along with an extensive highlight archive from the entire 2009-10 season. The app is being offered for free for the remainder of the season. No word yet on what it will cost next year, or whether or not it will support live streaming of out-of-market games (currently delivered in Flash via NHL.com).
Cookie Jar Entertainment and NDi Media have teamed up to develop and distribute an online multi-user role-playing game, “Muzika” next year, based on the TV series Mudpit, currently in production. The game utilizes NDi Media’s collaborative “Mix Master” music platform.
Video sharing site Metacafe has hired Angela Gaspar as VP/Strategic Accounts, based in Los Angeles. She joins from Warner Bros. Digital Media, where she served as VP/Digital Sales. Gil Larsen has also joined as Senior Director of Eastern Sales, based in New York. Gil comes over from the NBA, where he served as Director of Global Business Development.

Privacy concerns or not, Facebook has grown up beyond the social sphere to become a search engine, video sharing site and publishing platform all rolled into one. Video publishers must figure out how to reach folks through the platform or risk hemorrhaging audiences. Mobile-focused online video company Kyte, which integrated to the Boxee player earlier this month, introduced new integrated support of Facebook – announcing support of its new Social Plugins solution and rolling out a three-pronged Kyte’s Facebook Application Framework. The solution will help publishers distribute content out into the social stream by enabling fan page integration, news feed notifications when a new video is posted and fully branded “canvas” pages that can serve as a publisher’s branded video destination within Facebook. Video placed on these pages can be swapped out, monetized with ads and be used to facilitate social events such as viewing parties and live interactive video sessions. Meanwhile, publishers seem to be embracing Facebook’s social plugins faster than you can say “Like.” More than 50,000 websites have already adopted the “Like” button in addition to other new features, according to TechCrunch, just a week after the program was announced.
