Today might be the biggest test ever for live streaming online with the Royal Wedding. It’s been predicted by Britain’s culture secretary that 2 billion people worldwide will tune into the wedding via TV broadcasts, but the big unknown is how many more will watch online. The wedding day has been declared a national holiday in the U.K., which makes it more likely that Brits will watch on TV than online at the office, plus the big moments will likely occur in the middle of the night in the U.S., which could also lessen the load on Internet servers. Nevertheless, Web backbone companies like Akamai are gearing up. The company is working with two dozen global broadcasters including Fox News, E! Online, Associated Press, and CBS, to cover the ceremony live online and to serve up clips later during the day. Royal traffic watchers can view traffic updates every five minutes here www.akamai.com/royalwedding. During the World Cup last summer, Akamai delivered more than 1.6 million live streams at peak moments for 24 broadcasters. “I’m expecting sustained traffic throughout the day given the live stream interest in some parts of the world, and more of the on-demand stream interest as the US starts their day,” Akamai Spokesperson Jennifer Donovan told Cynopsis. “Then there’s the overall traffic related to news, videos, pictures, blog posts, social updates, etc. throughout the day that should keep Internet traffic to news sites at a good level throughout the day.”
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
 

Spanish-language network Telemundo is launching a multiplatform campaign for its “El Poder de Saber” series of public service announcements promoting education that kicks off May 2. The network will integrate the issue of education into an upcoming novella and will also offer the PSAs online.
 
Premium movie service Epix rolled out apps for Android tablets, Samsung TVs and Roku set-top boxes, among others, to stream its movies on those devices. The apps are free and let authenticated users watch films like Star Trek and Iron Man 2. Epix, as a newer entrant, has built its service on multiplatform access, so a mobile launch is a natural next step.
 
Lexus teamed up with online portal MSN to create a Web series called Fresh Perspectives with six artists creating videos in response to a “theme.” The series then showcases the artists putting their works together with Lexus as the sponsor.
 
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Daily deals sites are still the new black. Case in point – the Web site Killerstartups.com  just launched a daily deals site for Internet entrepreneurs and online business owners, according to TechCrunch. The new service will be hosted at Startups.com and feature daily discounts on Web apps and software for online businesses.
 

Podcasting technology provider Call In Studio is launching a new product that lets podcasters and radio stations accept, manage and screen live calls for their shows through the Web. The service is cloud-based and billed on a per-use basis. The company is founded by former Box Office Mojo co-owner Sean Saulsbury.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Ads on Smartphones work, according to a new study from Google. The computer giant studied mobile phone usage and found that 71 percent of Smartphone users search for related content on their Smartphones after being exposed to ads online and offline. Google also said that 82 percent notice mobile ads and 74 percent are driven to make a purchase after using their mobile phones while shopping. About 88% of users who look for information or content on their phones take action related to that search within a day, Google said.
 
New research says the number of video ad impressions on mobile phones is rising and now averages 728 million per month in the first quarter, up more than one-third from a year ago. The data comes from mobile ad network Rhythm NewMedia.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Multiscreen measurement service Rentrak Corporation inked a deal with Image Entertainment, Inc., an independent programming distributor with more than 3,000 DVD titles in its library. Under the deal Rentrak will track the performance of Image’s on-demand content.
 
Online media company Resonate Networks struck a two-year partnership with DataLogix to enable advocacy groups to better communicate with their members and issue calls to action during the upcoming political season.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Smartphones are expected to comprise 45.3% of all handsets shipped in 2015, while Smartphone processor revenue will grow nearly 21% each year from 2009 to 2015, said research firm In-Stat, citing compound annual growth rate figures.
 
Privacy is a big issue for Smartphone users who are concerned about sharing data on their mobile devices. Only 36% of respondents in a recent study said they felt in control of their personal information, according to eMarketer data from TRUSTe and Harris Interactive. Respondents also cited concerns about being tracked by advertisers on mobile phones, especially given the more personal nature of a phone and the data it stores.
 
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Hearkening back to the social media platform that boosted him onto cable, Conan O’Brien’s “Team Coco Digital” rolled out  video greeting cards exclusively for online fans addressing Facebook situations, such as status changes, photo tagging, and “surviving mass unfriendings.” The trick is users need to “like” Team Coco to gain access to the videos to post on Facebook walls.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~
 

Advanced digital video technology solutions provider Imagine Communications appointed David Sykes as VP of Sales. He most recently worked for Opnext. He’ll report to Imagine’s CEO Richard Stanfield.
