Cynopsis: Kids!

4/27/07

Good morning. It’s Friday, April 27, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood is taking issue with the US Dept. of Health and Human Services (HHS) for using Shrek as a spokes-ogre in its anti-obesity public service campaign, which has been running since February.  Calling it a conflict of interest the child advocacy group says that on the one hand Shrek is telling kids exercise and eat well, while on the other hand the character is also featured many candy and junk food ads and promotions.  The anti-obesity Shrek ad campaign is a joint effort of HHS, the Ad Council’s Coalition for Healthy Children and DreamWorks Animation SKG.  As I said when the project was first announced, if you look at the use of Shrek in this PSAs from an adult over thinking point-of-view it doesn’t make complete sense, you have to look at the character and campaign from a kid perspective.  That said, the anti-obesity PSAs featuring Shrek will not run from just prior to the Shrek the Third movie release until about a month after it opens, according to USA Today, which quotes an HHS spokesman explaining, “because we’re not in the business of promoting movies.”  Following that, the PSAs will return and the campaign will run through the end of the year.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Soup2Nuts, an animation studio and unit of Scholastic Media, has begun production on 26 halfhour episodes of the animated property WordGirl.  The new series will premiere in September 2007 during the PBS Kids Go! programming block. WordGirl follows he adventures of mild-mannered fifth grader, Becky Bostford, who becomes WordGirl armed with a cape, vocabulary words and lots of definitions.  The series began last year as a group of shorts (20×2′ and 10×1′) and a website that launched on PBS Kids Go! and its website.

Adult Swim, which shares space channel space with Cartoon Network, held its 2007-2008 upfront presentation last evening in NYC. The great news for young adults is that Adult Swim will move to a seven-night a week schedule with the addition of Friday nights, starting July 6, 2007 at 11p.  Summer will also bring the premiere of Robot Chicken: Star Wars a special on June 17.  Produced in conjunction with Lucasfilm, the special will feature celebrities galore, including George Lucas’ voice and likeness (in action figure form), as well as the voices of Mark Hamill, Conan O’Brian, Seth MacFarlane and Robert Smigel among others.  In the new show department, the 2007-2008 season will see the debut of three new Adult Swim series: Superjail (2008); Fat Guy Stuck in the Internet (fall 2007); and the already announced Lucy, Daughter of the Devil (summer 2007).  Among the returning series are Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, Squidbillies, The Boondocks, The Venture Brothers, Metalocalypse, Moral Orel, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job, and yes Aqua Teen Hunger Force.  The Adult Swim upfront was a somewhat unconventional event.  Rather than introduce its new line-up with the usual lecture/theater sweaty butt style presentation, the network teamed with Microsoft’s Zune to provide attendees with Adult Swim branded Zune players pre-loaded with new season information.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Azteca America has licensed Discovery Kids en Espanol programming from Discovery Networks US Hispanic Group.  The network will air the kids programs on Saturday and Sunday mornings 6:30-8:30a.

Disney Channel Latin America has acquired the first two seasons of the animated series The Secret Show in a licensing deal with BBC Worldwide. Targeted to K7-12 The Secret Show is produced by Collingwood O’Hare for the BBC, is due to air on the pan-regional Latin American network in 2007.  Additionally, Canada’s BBC Kids has acquired the second season, which it will debut on May 8.

Sarah Silverman will serve as host of the 2007 MTV Movie Awards, which will be televised live, a first, on Sunday, June 3 from the Gibson theatre in Universal City, California.  You may recall Mark Burnett will executive produce this year’s show, with Salli Frattini executive producing for MTV, and will include a new category featuring user-generated content, as part of an MTV and Yahoo! Movies partnership.  Silverman is the host of The Sarah Silverman Program, which airs on Comedy Central.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Barbie became a tech-head yesterday when Mattel launched its new Barbie Girls platform, virtual and real life play experience, at an event in NYC.  The toymaker officially introduced BarbieGirls.com, a girl-targeted online social community that went into beta testing earlier this month, and unveiled a Barbie Girls MP3 Player designed to be used in conjunction with the website. Mattel will expand Barbie Girls to include 12 countries and in five other languages from fall 2007.

  • Literally a tech-head, the Barbie Girl device is a 4.5-inch MP3 player (512 MB) with a design based on the Barbie Doll, which is to say while it isn’t a Barbie doll it pretty much looks like one.  MP3 player has a miniSD slot for a memory card, and can play any non-DRM-encrypted MP3 or WMA files. The Barbie Girl MP3 ($59.99) will be available from July 2007 across the US, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand.
  • In addition to a range of tools for designing and customizing virtual characters and rooms, BarbieGirls.com has a host of safety filters, features and rules to help protect its young users, yet allowing them to chat among its registered members in two ways.  There is B Chat, allows members to talk in their “rooms’ or ‘public space’, and Secret B Chat, a private chat that can takes place only in a girl’s ‘room’ and only with her ‘best friends’  girls who also have a Barbie Girl device and who have physically connected their devices into each others computer docking station.

Del Rey, an imprint of Ballantine Books at the Random House, will publish a novel based on the Electronic Arts’ real time strategy game Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars on May 29, 2007 in the US and Canada.  The novel will be released in the UK and Germany soon.  Rated “T” for Teens by the ESRB, Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars is currently available for the PC and will be released for Xbox 360 on May 10.

This week marks AOL launch of the previously announced Ye Olde Shrek the Third Royal Tournament, a collection of Shrek related games, three weeks ahead of the May 18 release of Shrek the Third.  Aimed at kids and parents, the tournament debuts with four challenges, which will be followed by another 20+.  Ye Olde Shrek the Third Royal Tournament is a co-production of AOL, DreamWorks Animation and Mark Burnett Productions.  ( http://shrek.aol.com )
