Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, April 22, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

Turner Broadcasting is set to launch its UK preschool channel Cartoonito in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).  Cartoonito will debut as a branded programming block across several EMEA territories in September 2011, which brings its distribution to 125 million homes in 112 territories.  The Cartoonito block will run on Cartoon Network in Turkey and the Middle East.  Turner has acquired the new CGI animated Bananas in Pyjamas series for the new Cartoonito block.  The series is produced by Southern Star Entertainment/Southern Star Singapore, a division of Endemol Group), in association with Australian Broadcasting Corporation.  The programming line up will also feature the new 3D animated series Jelly Jamm, co-produced by Spanish indies Vodka Capital, 737 Shaker and RTVE (Radio Television Espanola).  Several additional pan-EMEA preschool series are expected to be unveiled for 2012 in the coming months.  Additionally, joining Cartoonito in EMEA are the Cartoonitos, six animated character shapes (Lolly, Bubble, Cuba, Spike, Ting, and Ringo), who are featured in interstitial wraparounds.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Chris Colfer, better known as Kurt on Glee, is writing a new pilot based on Florence Laughlin’s kid’s book, The Little Leftover Witch, for Disney Channel, per THR.  The book tells the story of a young witch, Felina, who is taken in by a mortal family when her broom breaks and she is stranded.  Sheila Greenwald illustrated the book.

MORE KIDS STUFF

CBBC (UK) furthers its commitment to its new Salford home in the North of England as Damian Kavanagh, Controller CBBC, unveils the drama line-up of new and returning series for its in-house production for next year.  Three of these series will be produced in the region.  CBBC picks up the new series The 4 O’Clock Club (13×30)  a new comedy/drama revolving around brothers at the same school, Nathan, a teacher, and Josh his student.  Josh dreams of becoming a rapper, the series features raps, and Nathan wants to prevent him from making the same mistakes he made  all of this finds the two in conflict and frequently in the detention room  also known as “The 4 O’Clock Club.”  The series is set to begin production near Salford in the next few months and stars former rapper Doc Brown.  CBBC gives the go ahead for returning series: Young Dracula for a third season (13×30) that will be produced in Liverpool; Sadie J returns for a second season (13×30) to be produced at BBC Studios in Elstree (near London); and, as previously announced, Trace Beaker Returns gets a season three pickup (13×30), which will shoot this summer in Newcastle.

Beyond Distribution finalizes a multi-title content deal with Thai Public Broadcasting Service.  The license agreement features kid-targeted series as well as documentaries: Wild Animal Baby Explorers (52×15)  a preschool aimed natural science program that looks at the world up close in detail; Backyard Science (26×30)  a science activity series for kids and featuring kids; Hyper Parents & Coddled Kids (1×60)  aimed at adults the documentary looks at today’s overprotective parents; Riverdance Live From Beijing (1×60).

Disney Junior will premiere new episodes of its short-form series A Poem Is…, Monday-Friday, April 25-29 at 9:55a.  Designed to introduce preschoolers to poetry, these new installments of A Poem Is… will feature Caroline Kennedy, Kenneth Branagh and Vanessa Williams reading poems by A.A. Milne, Sara Coleridge, Eliza Lee Follen and Anny and Jane Taylor.

Mattel enters into VOD licensing and distribution deal with Avail-TVN, a North American digital media services provider, for its Barbie series.  Under the deal, Barbie content (including some 20 titles initially released as direct to DVD titles) will be available via VOD in both English and Spanish beginning tomorrow, Saturday, April 23, 2011, beginning with Barbie of Swain Lake and Barbie Fairytopia.  Two new movies will be added each month through the end of the year.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Marvel Entertainment launches a merchandise program based on the teen-targeted super hero video game franchise Marvel vs. Capcom.  The co-branded program comes on the heels of the latest release in the gaming franchise, Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds.  Marvel extends franchise and console gaming experience by signing on deals with manufacturers for products in a range of categories:

  • Mad Engine will develop apparel featuring t-shirts and sweatshirts with the Marvel Super Heroes and Capcom characters. Product is currently available at Hot Topic stores.
  • Philcos Enterpriser is producing a line of t-shirts and sweatshirts available this April exclusively in Canada at retailers including HMV, Spencer Gifts, Blockbuster and Winners. Sears will also carry a youth line in stores from July 2011.
  • Diamond Select Toys and Collectibles will release Marvel vs. Capcom Minimates. The two-pack set will be available at Toys”R”Us stores and comic/specialty stores from August 2011.
  • Hollywood Collectibles Group will debut high-end collectible statue sets based on characters featured in Marvel vs. Capcom 3.  Each set will include one character from each universe. Product will be available September 2011 through Diamond Distribution and

Mad Catz released its Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds  Arcade FightStick: Tournament Edition for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, currently available via www.store.gameshark.com and www.shop.capcom.com .
UDON will release an art book this summer featuring a compilation of existing Marvel vs. Capcom imagery along with all-new art from noted comic artists.
