Verizon Wireless announced 2.2 million iPhone 4 activations during Q1 of 2011, accumulating them during a period of less than 2 months since the device’s Feb. release on the platform, with 22% coming from new customers. More than half of Verizon’s new customers signed up for either an iPhone or 4G HTC Thunderbolt, released in March. The company reiterated its goal of placing a smartphone in 50% of its subscribers’ hands by the end of the year.
Amazon launched a Kindle Store in Germany, Europe’s top market for eBooks, with some 650,000 titles. Selections include 250,000 German-language titles, thousands of free classics and a wide collection of independent newspapers and magazines. Germany’s writers and publishers will also have the Kindle Direct Publishing service at their disposal to make their works instantly available on the new store.
The New York Times signed up 100,000 new subscribers to its digital subscription service, introduced in Canada in mid-March and rolling out globally during Q2. Digital advertising grew by 4.5% and made up 28% of the company’s total Q1 ad revenues, but did not offset losses in print revenue – down 7.5% for the quarter.

Nokia will receive royalty payments in the “billions of dollars” for installing Windows software on its phones beginning in 2012. Plans include the development of a new global mobile app store built on the Windows Marketplace infrastructure.
Tivo got a win in a ruling in its long-running patent case against EchoStar, with the U.S. Court of Appeals claiming that EchoStar did violate its “multimedia time warp” system. The decision clears the way for Tivo to finally force Dish Network to disable any infringing set-top boxes in current subscribers homes.
A coalition of privacy groups called for the government to adopt industrywide measures to protect users’ privacy in the wake of Google‘s settlement over its infractions with the Buzz social network. Suggested requirements include to endorse Do Not Track legislation, to require the deletion of search histories and to beef up cloud encryption technologies. Google admitted problems with the launch of Buzz, admitting it “fell short of our usual standards for transparency and user control.”
AT&T said its agreement to buy T-Mobile would enable the company to build out high speed wireless internet services across 97% of the U.S. by integrating a significant portion of T-Mobile cell sites into the AT&T network. The telco also claims that the merger would spur economic growth and innovation.
Timeshifting continues to be a significant factor in how consumers watch TV, according to Nielsen data released leading up to this year’s Upfronts, with DVR penetration now topping 38%. Mobile Video viewing has also increased 41% from last year, with the heaviest usage coming from teens ages 12-17 who watch 7 hours 13 minutes of mobile video a month. Other trends include:
- Viewing video online also continues to rise, with 143.9 million Americans viewing video online in Jan. 2011
- The audience overlap between visitors to network and broadcast media sites and social networking & blog sites is significant. In January 2011 alone, 49% of social networking & blog site visitors also visited TV network and broadcast media sites
A growing number of mobile phone users are concerned about their privacy, particularly when “checking in” or using location-based, GPS-powered apps, according to a new Nielsen study. The concern is more pronounced among women app downloaders, with 59% reporting they have privacy concerns compared to 52% of male app downloaders. Privacy is also more of an issue for users 45 years or older, with 61% of the demo claiming concern.
Annual mobile payment transactions will increase to 45 billion in 2015, according to In-Stat, sparked by an increased level of interest shown by banks, credit card companies, mobile operators and handset/operating system providers. Areas of the largest growth include mobile web payments, app store billings and micropayment transactions.
Research in Motion’s new PlayBook tablet may be a bigger hit than initially expected, according to a research note from RBC Capital Markets, which projects as many as 50,000 units sold during the first day across 70 retail outlets (including pre-sales.) Freedom Interactive took the wraps off its first daily iPad app this week around the group’s O.C. Register. The daily edition, free for now but scheduled to cost about 99 cents/week going forward, presents news, information, video content, photos and interactive features across 6 categories with 6 major advertisers attached, according to Doug Bennett, President of Freedom Interactive. The company’s approach included creating a separate crew of production staffers familiar with HTML5 and setting up a syndication structure to help publish digital content out to Freedom’s 27 dailies and 8 TV stations. “Developing the basic template was where the heavy initial development costs lied,” said Mr. Bennett, who says Freedom’s Colorado Springs Gazette will be its next publication to get an iPad app.
