04/01/11
Good morning, it’s Friday, April 1, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
The controversial window of (super pricey) premium VOD has arrived. DirecTV announced it will begin offering 48-hour movie rentals from four major studios (Warner Bros., Fox, Sony and Universal) beginning at the end of April approximately 60 days after their theatrical release, reports THR. The satellite broadcaster will be the first distributor to offer the service nationwide, while Comcast and Vudu reportedly test a similar offering in select markets. Each movie will cost $30 to rent – that’s about 62 cents for each hour you get to keep the movie.
CBS announced on Thursday that it will feature eight nights of programming in the coming days emphasizing Twitter, with performers and personalities from shows such as The Big Bang Theory and Hawaii Five-O tweeting in real time. #CBSTweetWeek, (note the Twitter hashtag), will run from Sunday through April 11, kicking off with Sunday’s 8 pm telecast of the Academy of Country Music Awards. Too bad “$#*! My Dad Says is on hiatus.
James Cameron told CinemaCon audiences that he planned to make the Avatar sequels using higher frame rates in order to improve the resolution of the 3D imagery, according to reports. Cameron, George Lucas and Jeffery Katzenberg extolled the virtues of theaters as a social venue and encouraged exhibitors to utilize the 3D medium to feature alternative content including live concerts and sporting events. Cameron and Lucas also announced plans to re-release versions of “Titanic” and “Star Wars Episode 1: the Phantom Menace” in 3D.
As if on cue at the Las Vegas event, the Digital Cinema unit at Sony announced it has selected Arqiva as its technology partner for the live global 3D distribution of the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships to worldwide cinemas in 2011.
Video ad network TidalTV has raised an additional $30 million from New Enterprise Associates, Comcast Interactive and Vahalla Partners to continue its international expansion and develop new multi-screen applications for advertisers, agencies and publishers. The investment nearly doubles the company’s last two financing rounds.
Bellevue, WA-based social media monitoring firm Visible Technologies announced a $6 million round of funding from existing investors, Investor Growth Capital (IGC), Centurion Holdings, Ignition Partners, In-Q-Tel and WPP. Visible builds enterprise software and services to extract value from social networking communities. It has raised a total of $45 million to date.
An increasing number of advertisers drove customers to download their mobile apps in February, according to mobile ad network Millennial Media. The top verticals driving downloads were Auto and Finance, contributing to the 14% growth of app downloads as a post-click campaign action month-over-month. Other trends for Feb. on the 91+ million user network included:
- Local Market Targeting grew 22% month-over-month with Telecoms, Restaurants, and Insurance advertisers using geotargeting to provide customized content and deals
- m-Commerce as a post-click campaign action more than doubled during the month as retail advertisers incorporated elements into Valentine’s Day and President’s Day promotions. Many offered additional discounts for items purchased via the mobile web or in the advertiser’s retail app
- Watch Video as a post-click campaign action grew 13% month-over-month with Consumer Electronics and Auto Verticals leveraging the use of video in product launches
Once the object of attacks itself (resulting in huge settlements and record fines), Microsoft is now acting as the put upon party. The company filed in Brussels a formal antitrust complaint against Google on Thursday, urging EU regulators to take action against the search giant for uncompetitive practices. The crux of the complaint is that Google uses its dominant search engine to promote its products over rivals. This is especially in true in the smartphone space, says Microsoft, where Google is purposely withholding technology Windows Phone 7 users need to access YouTube metadata the way Android and iPhones do. The company also says Google is blocking access to content owned by book publishers and preventing advertisers from accessing their own campaign data.
News Corp., parent of several popular cable networks including Fox News and FX, joined the chorus of content companies to send a cease and desist letter to Time Warner Cable to get the company to stop streaming live shows to the iPad, according to the LATimes.
Amazon is looking to add its own “near-field communications” (NFC) mobile payment system for smart phones to allow users to purchase items at retail stores with a wave of their phones, reports Bloomberg. NFC-enabled handsets are expected to double next year to 35 million units shipped according to ABI Research.
Meanwhile, Google and Intel are among 32 new members to join the NFC Forum, a non-profit industry group assembled to hasten the adoption of near field communications.
The next big high tech hub could be…Kansas City? Google announced that Kansas City, MO will be the city to receive an ultra-high-speed internet network capable of I gigabit download speeds, up to 100 times faster than what passes for broadband from some DSL providers.
Sony Pictures Entertainment signed on with Thought Equity Motion to utilize its T3 Metadata Editor to better manage content and clearance information. The platform, which includes tools such as facial recognition, scene detection, and script synching, will enable Sony to create interactive features allowing users to search content by actor, location, line of dialogue as well as manage restrictions around music clearances, product placements, etc.
Look for prosperous virtual goods market to more than double by 2014. Thanks to explosive growth from Facebook and Twitter, more than 10 billion social networking and online world (SNOW for short) accounts have been created as of the end of 2010, according to In-Stat with some 4.5 billion still active. The increasing proliferation of smartphones has provided always-available access to the networks and virtual worlds, greatly enhancing the opportunity for purveyors of virtual goods to sell their ware. The market for mobile virtual goods has already expanded to $2 billion globally. The top 10 virtual goods companies earn 73% of current worldwide revenues. While Asia still dominates, The Americas and European/Middle East/Africa regions now have grown to account for well over a quarter of all virtual goods sales.
Cablevision has delayed the launch of its Live TV iPad app as it awaits Apple’s approval, per the WSJ. The application, which isn’t being delayed because of the programming conflicts over Time Warner Cable’s version, provides access to 32 live cable channels from within the customer’s home. The app was originally slated to be released by the end of March.
ESPN has developed its customizable ESPN ScoreCenter app for the Windows Phone 7 devices. The app, downloaded more than 13 million times for iOS and Andriod, gives easy-to-navigate access to scores and stats from 15 major sports.
