Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning, it’s Friday, April 18, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

All 5 members of the FCC met behind open doors on the Stanford University campus yesterday to hold another hearing on net neutrality issues, and this time Comcast decided not to show up at all. The refused invitation comes days after the MSO released a “Bill of Rights” initiative with P2P content delivery provider Pando Networks, recommending how best to manage file sharing traffic. FCC commissioners seemed to be divided about the issues. Michael Copps and Jonathan Adelstein called for the agency to prevent Comcast and its competitors from unfairly discriminating against some customers, reports the AP. But two others, Deborah Tate and Robert McDowell, warned against burdening the industry with additional regulations.

NBC Universal became the latest TV studio to unveil a purely digital production outfit. Based in Burbank and led by VP Cameron Death, the NBC Universal Digital Studio formed a flagship strategic partnership with OMG Digital to line up sponsors for its shows right out of the gate. Multiplatform Sci Fi conspiracy series Gemini Division will be the studio’s first release coming this summer, developed with Sony Pictures Television International. It stars Rosario Dawson as a New York City cop who uncovers an underworld of “genetically fabricated life forms,” produced with Electric Farm Entertainment (the team behind Afterworld.) Woke Up Dead, also from Electric Farm, is the studio’s next project about a college student who wakes up one day as a zombie. NBC Universal Digital Studio retains domestic distribution rights for both series while SPTI retains all international rights including television, theatrical and DVD releases, internet, digital sell-through, gaming and mobile rights.
Universal Studios Home Entertainment took the wraps off of the studio’s first slate of movies and TV shows produced for the Blu-ray format, to be released day-and-date with standard DVD editions. Season 2 of Heroes on Aug. 26th will mark the first global Blu-ray release, followed by a pack of Universal feature films including The Incredible Hulk, Wanted, Hellboy II and the latest Mummy movie.
How retro. While most networks are hastening to get their shows up online as quickly as possible, The CW has decided to discontinue streaming for the final 5 episodes of Gossip Girl, returning on Monday at 8 pm ET. The CW promises past episodes and other exclusive content around the show will still be available, including contests, trailers and character-based widgets.
Call for Content: MTV and Mark Burnett Productions are holding a MTV Movie Spoof Contest looking for fodder for the 2008 MTV Movie Awards. Submissions and voting have begun on a ton of UGC sites including Photobucket, MySpace, Break, Buzznet, Heavy, Funny or Die and Daily Motion.

lonelygirl 15 and KateModern creators Miles Beckett and Goodried formed a new studio focusing on producing original series for social networks dubbed EQAL, with $5 million in Series A financing led by Boston-based Spark Capital. Also involved in the round were Ron Conway (an early Google investor); Netscape co-founder Marc Anderssen; Hollywood producer Conrad Riggs (Survivor); and former Google executive Georges Harik.
Online video network Broadband Enterprises will conduct its second annual upfront presentation on April 24 at the Nokia Theatre in New York, debuting 10 original online shows in a number of genres including comedy, entertainment, sports, environmental, music and parenting.
Gaywired Media completed a redesign of its LGBT consumer flagship site featuring new social networking features, new columns and a new video player that will feature vlog content from a variety of new contributors.
Call for Content: Documentary unit P.O.V. is holding a UGC contest with Boston PBS station WGBH and NPR looking for unique takes on the issues that will factor into the upcoming Presidential elections. The winning Why Vote? submission stands to receive $2,000 in funding and a paid internship.

Satisfied with its first round of testing with Google‘s search engine, Yahoo moved closer to outsourcing search advertising to its rival, according to The Wall Street Journal. A search tie-up with Google could increase Yahoo’s cash flow by more than $1 billion a year, says a Citigroup analyst.

Google eased investors’ fears reporting a 30% jump in profits ($1.31 billion) thanks to a 42% increase in revenue ($5.19 billion). Company officials denied feeling adverse affects from the slowing U.S. economy and claimed that paid click growth has been much higher than reported by the likes of comScore and others. (Google claims paid clicks grew by 20% in Q1 from a year ago, compared to 30% and 45% growth rate the previous 2 quarters.) Needless to say Google stock soared on the news.

Universal’s Blu-ray announcement comes on the back of a new study by consulting firm Oliver Wyman suggesting studios can wrangle $7-$9 for high def VOD and online day-and-date rentals, $4 more than the current going rate. The study suggests consumers are also willing to pay up to $5 more for digital ownership with interoperability and storage issues worked out. The firm sees HD VOD and online rentals as a $5 billion growth opportunity overall. Ka-ching.
Facebook nearly doubled its U.S. unique user base in the last year, according to the latest social networking metrics from Nielsen Online, increasing from 12.6 to 24.9 million users. The site still trails MySpace by a wide margin, however, which registered over 60 million uniques in March.

Veoh Networks is sporting a new homepage that makes it a little easier to find things. Veoh actually removed the space-grabbing video player from the home page to make room for new personalized news feeds, video recommendations, personalized subscriptions and other social networking functions. The site is touting big growth in several categories including global unique visitors (up 25% during Q1 to 28 million uniques) and total hours of video viewed (46 million hours in March). Veoh also said the average length of a clip viewed increased from 6 – 10 minutes from the previous quarter, suggesting viewers are either finding more ambitious content to watch or buying more comfortable desk chairs. And they’re doing so during primetime TV viewing hours. Veoh said prime time viewing increased 44% during Q1.
