Bandwidth is like chocolate – too much is never enough. Comcast is rolling out its next tier of DOCSIS 3.0 superfast internet service, dubbed “Extreme 105.” The 105 refers to a blinding maximum download speed of 105 Mbps, capable of downloading a 4GB HD movie in 5 minutes, a feat that takes an hour an a half with a standard 6 Mbps Comcast connection. The service is now available in most major Comcast markets including San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Washington D.C. and Boston. It’s being offered at an introductory rate of $105/mo for triple play customers but costs $200/mo. as a standalone. (Who cares if cable becomes a dumb pipe if that pipe costs $200 a month?)
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
NBA.com
wrapped up the 2010-11 season with a total of 1.94 billion videos viewed according to Nielsen, an increase of more than 140% from last season. The NBA GameTime app, now available on Apple TV, Google TV, Roku, Vizio, LG, iPhone, Android, Blackberry, iPad, Panasonic and Samsung, delivered an increase of 130% in downloaded content from last year, according to Turner Sports/NBA Digital.
 
BBC.com
is reporting record gains growing its user base by over 35% during Feb. and March. Average visits to BBC.com registered 29% increases and user engagement levels rose 18% year on year, per ComScore ratings.

Video search engine VideoSurf raised $16 million in further capital in a round led by Pitango Venture Capital, per AllThingsD, nearly doubling its seed money. Videosurf pulls video from sites such as Hulu, Metacafe, Dailymotion and Fancast with an emphasis on entertainment.
 
Hillcrest Labs
, developer of the Kylo OTT TV browser and the loopy Loop pointer, has raised an additional $5.5 million in funding from unnamed investors, according to an SEC filing. The company’s last round, led by AllicanceBernstein, totaled $25 million in 2008.
 
Developers were most excited by the anticipated release of the Kinect developers kit at Microsoft‘s MIX 11 conference this week. It’s due out later this spring but you can sign up now to be notified.
 
NATPE||Content First
is renaming its summertime multiplatform-themed LATV Fest “PitchCon 2011,” emphasizing it as an avenue for creative types to gain access to producers and industry insiders. The early June event will include pitch presentations and classes on budgeting, scheduling, web video production and multiplatform writing.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
YouTube
is sending repeat copyright defenders to the YouTube Copyright School, required coursework for folks who upload videos that are requested to be taken down by their copyright owners.  In the past, the site operated under a three strikes rule, disabling accounts after their third copyright complaint.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
While search is still the primary way publishers direct traffic to their content pages, representing 41% of external referrals, social referrals are catching up, responsible for 11% during Q1, according Outbrain‘s inaugural Content Discovery and Engagement Report. (Outbrain draws data from sites where its platform is installed.) Of the six content verticals examined, stories in the news, entertainment and lifestyle categories were the most likely to receive traffic from social sources. Traffic coming from social media sources has the highest tendency to “bounce” to another site but readers who go from one content site to another are most likely to be engaged in what they’re reading.
 
With all the talk of cord cutting, global pay TV subscribers actually increased 6% in 2010 over the previous year, according to In-Stat. But many of the top providers lost basic subs as cable was impacted by gains in satellite and IPTV services, according to the researcher, with only Western Europe logging cable TV gains. China has the largest payTV subscriber base with 160 million and Western Europe is the largest regional market for IPTV services with nearly 17.5 million subscribers.

Google and Microsoft’s Bing each added search market share through March, according to ComScore, with Google growing from a 65.4% share in February to 65.7% share in March and Bing up .3 percentage points to 13.9%. Yahoo, which is testing its new Yahoo Search Direct engine, continued its slow slide, falling to a 15.7% share of the U.S. search market.

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion is launching its PlayBook tablet on Tuesday, despite challenges in getting developers to make apps for it. The 7″-screen device is priced at $500 (the starting price of the 10″ iPad), but it has the ability download Flash video and multitask with a broadband connected TV – in other words it can stream video on the TV while running related apps on the tablet.
 
The Civil War is getting more attention in this its 150-year anniversary with the launch of History‘s $7.99 “The Civil War Today” iPad app, chosen as the iPad “App of the Week” on the iTunes store. Cool features include the ability to tweet from app using Morse Code and view continually updated content about the war including original newspapers, photos, battle maps and journals. In fact, the network is promising to update the app daily for the next 4 years.
 
The popular Stitcher SmartRadio app is now available for free for the iPad. The app “stitches” together audio programming from thousands of media outlets and the larger iPad screen displays a wider variety of curated topics that change with trending news and topics.
 
Comcast’s E! Online is offering up a live stream broadcast of the Royal Wedding on the morning of April 29, delivered directly to your Facebook page, where you can cobble together your own snarky viewing parties. AOL marketer Debbie Menin was named Industry Practice Head, AOL Entertainment, charged with partnering with sales leadership to execute a national Entertainment industry strategy. She is based in AOL’s LA office.
 
Mobile ad platform Verve Wireless has tapped AP’s former head of sales Dan Hodges to run national advertising sales as Chief Revenue Officer, and former AOL VP Aimee Irwin, who will serve as SVP/Business Development and Publisher Network. Dan will be based in Verve’s New York City office while Aimee will be based in Bethesda, MD.

New personalized social media-driven iPad app Flipboard has hitched its wagon to a megabrand. Flipboard is an elegant content aggregation app that is refreshes itself constantly with articles, images and videos your social networking friends recommend to you. Reading recommended articles is something we all already do – this just makes it so much easier- to both share and consume. (It also curates content from around the web in several categories.) Now Oprah Winfrey herself has become a partner. The social news service has struck a deal with Oprah and Discovery’s new OWN network in a deal that will give the TV host a prominent place on its home page and Flipboard users access to exclusive scenes from the Queen of Daytime’s final season. It is the first exclusive deal the start-up has struck and looks to be a win-win, giving Oprah a hot new brand to tie to in the digital space. The Palo Alto-based start-up has certainly impressed investors thus far. It recently landed a huge $50 million second round of funding largely from New York-based Insight Venture Partners, confirms AllThingsD, giving it a valuation of a nice round $200 million.
