Cynopsis: Kids!

04/11/08

Good morning. It’s Friday, April 11, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Turner International expands into India, where it will begin produce animated feature films.  Additionally, Turner International has teamed with sister company Warner Bros. to form the Hollywood TV channel.  Turner, which is setting up its own animation studio in India, plans to produce two animated movie per year, beginning in 2009.  Meanwhile discussions are underway for carriage deals for the new Hollywood TV channel, which Turner aims to launch by years end.  Turner has a range of channels already available in India including kid-centric channels, Cartoon Network and Indian-kids channel Pogo.

MORE KIDS STUFF

doing whatever a spider can … and that makes for one very busy Spider-Man, in two different animated adaptations:

  • First, each Saturday, beginning tomorrow morning, April 12, Kids’ WB on The CW will air back-to-back episodes of the newest Spider-Man series, The Spectacular Spider-Man (9:30-10:30a).
  • Joining Kabillion, simultaneously on VOD and Broadband, is Spider-Man, The Animated Series (13×26) on May 1, 2008.  Spider-Man, The Animated Series will be available on Kabillion On-Demand (via Comcast & Bresnan Cable systems across the country) and the Kabillion broadband site (
  • www.Kabillion.com).  Bill Schultz, CEO, Kabillion says to expect multi-platform marketing and fan efforts based around the CGI series.  Starring Neil Patrick Harris, Spider-Man, The Animated series was produced by Mainframe Entertainment in association with Sony Pictures Television, and originally aired on MTV in 2003.

KidsCo, a 24/7 multiplatform channel, has entered into a sub-Saharan Africa broadcast deal with pan-African platform operator, Gateway Broadcast Services (GTV).  The channel debuted in the Saharan African territories including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia, Ghana, Ethiopia, Botswana, Namibia, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Malawi and Zimbabwe last week.  The channel, which had its initial launch this time last year, expects to be available in 40 or so territories, including Europe and Latin America, within the next 18-months. A joint venture of NBC Universal, DIC Entertainment and Corus Entertainment, KidsCo is targeted to K6-10 and families and offers a mix of live-action and animated TV series and feature films from the DIC and Nelvana libraries.  Last month KidsCo launched Sky Cable (Philippines), Hana TV (Korea), SingTel’s mio (Singapore) and PNCC (Palau), and is also available in Romania, Ukraine, Hungary, Russia, Turkey and Poland.

This weekend Portugal gets two new Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) channels, with the launch of the general entertainment Sony Entertainment Television (SET) for People 16-49, and Animax, the Japanese anime channel aimed at viewers 15-35, on Saturday, April 12, 2008.  At launch both channels will be available via IPTV and DTH operator, MEO, part of Portugal Telecom.  Additionally, SPTI is in advanced negotiations with other Portuguese operators for carriage of the channel.  As previously announced, Saturday will also see the debut of Animax in Spain

MARKETING/LICENSING

7-Eleven launches a month-long Iron Man promotion that leads up to the release of Marvel Entertainment and Paramount Pictures’ live-action Iron Man movie on May 2, 2008.  The promotion features various themed cups and mugs: four 3D Slurpee cups that feature pictures of the movie’s stars in character including Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) and his nemesis Iron Monger, the Iron Monger cup features 24 frames from the Iron Man.  The store is also offering a refillable mug (28 oz) featuring the red and gold helmet of Iron Man’s Mark III suit of armor.  Additionally, 7-Eleven will offer three different Iron Man Slurpee spoon-straws with detachable Iron Man and Iron Monger figurines.  Ah, and the Slurpee flavor of the month is the AMP Energy Freeze, a frozen version of Pepsi’s AMP Energy, an exclusive for 7-Eleven.

STONE SOUP

Harry Potter fans get your quill pens and ink ready to vie for a chance to spend quality time with an oh so rare copy of J.K. Rowling’s handwritten stories, The Tales of Beedle the Bard (Lest I remind you there are only 7 copies of this book?), and the company of security guards.  Amazon.com is offering fans a chance to do just that by entering its Beedle the Bar Ballad Writing Contest (www.amazon.com/beedleballads, www.amazon.co.uk/beedleballads).  OK, here is the scoop, first off to enter you have to be 13+, hey I’m just telling you the rules I don’t make them up.  Moving on, participants will need to submit a creative submission, in English, of 100 or fewer words answering one of the following questions:

  • What songs do wizards use to celebrate birthdays?
  • What other sports do wizards play besides Quidditch?
  • What have you learned from the Harry Potter series that you use in everyday life?

Submissions will be accepted now through April 22, with winners chosen in two categories, Tweens/Teens 13-17, and People 18+.  On May 5, Amazon will post the semi-finalists from both demos, and then will ask its customers to vote for their favorite.  The contest is open to customers in 24 countries, including the US, UK, Germany, Japan, China and Canada.  But that ain’t all folks, the winner gets to wear a lovely pair of white gloves while visiting with the book.  How kind to provide guards and gloves, this will greatly reduce concerns of paper cuts.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

John Paul Geurts is upped to VP and Creative Director, Nickelodeon Recreation
Geurts will have oversight for all creative and design development for Nickelodeon’s Recreation business segments, which includes hotels; theme parks; cruises; and live entertainment.  Geurts, who joined the company 15 years ag0, will continue to oversee Nickelodeon Recreation’s Design Studio based in Orlando, Florida.  Formerly, Nick’s Creative Director, Geurts will continue reporting to EVP, Howard Smith.

Ernest Martinez is promoted to Creative Director, Radio Disney.  Martinez will also continue as Radio Disney’s afternoon on-air personality, Ernie D.  Based in Dallas, Martinez is now responsible for programming, as well as overseeing feature and on-air promo content and on-air talent.  He will report to the radio networks’ VP/Programming, Ray De La Garza.
