Good morning, it’s Friday, April 11, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

The plot thickened once again between Yahoo and Microsoft as Time Warner and News Corp. crept back into the picture, according to reports. Talks are underway to have Time Warner take a 20% stake in a combined Yahoo/AOL, giving the company the cash to buy back some of its shares from investors. Meanwhile, News Corp. is talking to Microsoft about making a joint bid for Yahoo, putting forth the prospect of a combined Yahoo/MSN/MySpace juggernaut. Yahoo’s directors are scheduled to meet this morning to mull their options. Analysts seem to think this all much ado about nothing and that the company will end up accepting Microsoft’s original offer, according to The Wall Street Journal.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Amidst all the hullaballoo, Yahoo found time to complete a distribution deal with Major League Baseball Advanced Media to feature a co-branded MLB.TV player on the Yahoo Sports portal in exchange for a share of the advertising and subscription revenue it generates. MLB.TV, which runs $119.95/year or $19.95/month, will continue to offer video subscriptions and manage ad sales on its own this season. Then Yahoo will take over subs and ad sales exclusively in 2009 and 2010, utilizing its Clickable format and new AMP management platform.

MySpace
signed a deal to give exclusive international TV and DVD distribution rights to some of its original content such as Roommates and Special Delivery to ShineReveille, a distribution arm of the London-based Shine Group. No user generated content or branded channel content is included and MySpace will retain the rights to sell its shows online in international markets.

USANetwork.com is trumpeting some high growth Q1 numbers heading into the upfront, including 3.1 million average site visits and 6.5 million video streams – double and triple digit increases from last year – and an average time spent of 29 minutes/per user. Q1 was the first full quarter its Character Arcade casual gaming site was operational, which now has 211,000 registered users.

TVN Entertainment signed a deal to distribute feature films and specialty content from Gravitas Ventures as two separate on-demand offerings.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

If only this were around in Dickens’ day. Online book distributor DailyLit signed a deal with publisher Grove/Atlantic to release Mike Lawson’s new thriller House Rules in daily bite-size email and RSS installments for set price of $9.95. DailyLit has signed similar deals with 20 publishers in all.

Online video start-up WorldTV is adding interoperability with mobile video broadcasting service Qik.com, allowing WorldTV users to create and share live broadcasts simultaneously on Qik and their WorldTV channel.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

After chasing Netflix into the movie mailer & download business, Blockbuster is now out to enter the crowded movie-to-the-set top market by developing its own broadband connected device to stream movies directly to the TV, according to THR. The company acquired Movielink last year for $6.6 million, giving it online rights to about 6,000 movies. The Blockbuster chain also announced it will switch over to offering Blu-ray DVD rentals and sales in all 5,000 of its retail outlets starting this week.

A new report from media research firm Centris suggests the digital switchover next Feb. may leave more than half of the 17 million + households who rely on over-the-air broadcast signals without reception. The report, following up on an earlier one revealing potential “gaps” and geographical challenges to broadcasters, identifies 10 markets with reception issues including New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington, D.C., Seattle and San Francisco.

FCC chairman Kevin Martin vowed not to give up the fight to force cable operators to offer a la carte programming, according to Multichannel News, despite requests from the Senate Commerce Committee to refocus his energy on the digital transition.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

The State Privacy and Security Coalition, a trade group representing prominent internet publishers including Google, Yahoo, AOL and Facebook, sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission this week, apposing a New York state bill out to limit companies’ ability to collect information for behavioral marketing purposes. The group argues that the industry imposes sufficient self-regulation already, and that an effort by a state body to regulate interstate internet commerce would be unconstitutional.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Newspaper sites collected 26.9% of the $7.5 billion spent in local online ad dollars in 2007, down from a 35.9% share in 2006, according to a new study from Borrell Associates. Paper sites are losing ground to pure play internet companies such as Google and Yahoo, which are beginning to set their sites more on local markets. Papers still enjoy a sizeable lead over local TV web sites which got 9.5% of the pie, an identical share that went to Yellow Pages sites in 2007. Not surprisingly video is the fastest growing local online ad component, expected to jump from $363 million in 2007 to $1.2 billion in 2008.

Seattle-based media technology firm RDPA and Nielsen Outdoor have developed a proprietary GPS device called the Nielsen Personal Outdoor Device, or Npod, to measure out-of-home advertising exposure by reading WiFi signals. The sample member’s path and travel speed is aligned with the “visibility zone” of out-of-home advertising sites, taking into consideration each site’s precise position, size, illumination status and direction it is facing. The resulting measurement of opportunity to see delivers reach, frequency and site-specific ratings data.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

CBS Television Distribution created a new position to manage branded advertising online. Greg Bennett was hired as SVP/Branded Integration and Online, overseeing product integration and other unique marketing opportunities on multiple platforms. He will be based in New York and report directly to John Nogawski, CTD President.

Mark Dawson
was named VP/Programming Services for the ICTV ActiveMedia Group. Mark will oversee the creation and launch of ActiveVideo programming from brands such as Fox, CNN and Reuters. He joins the iTV platform provider from Gemstar-TV Guide.


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

The Apple trailers site has an exclusive of the newest Iron Man trailer, available in small, medium, large, 480p, 720p, 1080p or optimized for the iPhone. The presentation is much more impressive than on the cluttered MySpace Trailer Park site, which got to debut the first Iron Man trailer. The movie has all the makings of being the biggest box-office extravaganza of the summer. Offering consumers a pristine taste of the experience is as compelling an argument for the need for more bandwidth as the industry can make.
