Seeing the same ads over and over not only impacts the viewing experience, it can affect viewers’ perception of brands. In a study from the AD-ID and The Harris Poll, 59% of viewers report that seeing the same ads repeatedly leads to a negative impact on their viewing experience, and 61% state that the frequency of ads makes them less likely to want to buy products or use the services of the company. Forty-nine percent agree that they have decided not to purchase a product from a brand when they see the ads too often. On the upside, the poll found that 76% of viewers agree that they would like to see ads better targeted to their interests, 33% said they don’t mind watching ads that are relevant to them, and 63% report that they have purchased a product and/or service they were unaware of because of an ad they saw.

ABC has tweaked its Monday and Wednesday schedules. The network added six more simulcasts of ESPN’s “Monday Night Football,” displacing previously announced “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune,” “Press Your Luck” and “What Would You Do?”. The game shows will debut in 2025, while “What Would You Do?” moves to Wednesdays, taking the slot held by “Scamanda,” which will wait for midseason.

The Association of National Advertisers sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission regarding the FTC’s approval of a report recommending legislation to limit companies’ ability to harness consumers’ data. While the ANA said it supports privacy legislation, the letter argues that a nationwide standard should account for “both the potential harms and clear benefits that the responsible use of data creates for consumers and the economy.” Christopher Oswald, EVP at the ANA, notes that targeted advertising subsidizes free and low-cost content and also “enables small, midsize, and start-up businesses to enter markets, innovate, and compete, thus driving down prices for consumers and empowering a vibrant, competitive marketplace of businesses.”

In more FTC news, the commission is dropping certain income-based requirements for Lifeline, its low-cost phone and Internet service program, for Hurricane Milton victims receiving federal disaster relief assistance. On Friday, the FCC said circumstances stemming from Hurricane Milton produced “good cause for further action to expeditiously ensure that households receive critical assistance for their communications needs in the aftermath of hurricanes and other tropical weather systems in the near term.”

Former director of development Susan Merwin is suing Lionsgate, Renegade Entertainment and Renegade 83 for sex discrimination, claiming she was illegally terminated because she took maternity leave. The lawsuit alleges Merwin was told her job had been eliminated, but “behind closed doors, Defendants had made the reprehensible decision to illegally terminate her employment and replace her with her subordinate.” Merwin also alleges she development department was run like a ”boy’s club.”

Streaming services may be stealing eyeballs, but broadcast and cable networks have the lion’s share of TV ad exposure time, or “ad voice,” according to data from Comscore. The measurement company invited Evan Shapiro, media cartographer and founder of ESHAP, to evaluate its newest dataset, The Score Report, and Shapiro found:
· 43.7% of total ad exposure is attributed to broadcast television alone. The top four included CBS with 10.2%, followed by ABC with 9.8%, NBC with 9.4%, and Fox at 5.3%.
· A sizeable portion of Share of Ad Voice in 1H24 was driven by live programming, including morning and nightly news programs on each of the big three broadcasters, and sports.
· Hulu and YouTube surpassed several major cable networks in terms of ad exposure. Tubi, Fox’s AVOD platform, also outperformed many established broadcast players.

In the second quarter of 2023, 87% of ad time was viewed on broadcast or cable.

“In my opinion, this this data can empower our industry and offer us the kind of transparency we need to move our business forward,” said Shapiro. “The marketplace is full of studies and charts, data, and reports. Total viewing measurement without proper context does not help the media buyers for whom television measurement is intended, nor the media community who needs to monetize viewing now, more than ever.”

Donald Trump passed on FOX News Media’s offer to host a second presidential debate, but the candidate has agreed to a pre-taped town hall, airing Wednesday, October 16 at 11a on Fox News’ “The Faulkner Focus.” The event will focus on women’s issues and be held with an audience entirely composed of women. FOX News said it has extended a standing invitation to Vice President Harris for a town hall event of equal stature.

Univision debunked the false claim made by right-wing commentators that Harris used a Teleprompter during Thursday’s town hall. The moderator of the town hall, Enrique Acevedo, and the President of Univision News, Daniel Coronell, each posted on X to refute the claim, explaining that the teleprompter seen on the broadcast was for Acevedo. “The prompter displayed my introduction (in Spanish) and then it switched to a timer. Any claim to the contrary is simply untrue,” wrote Acevedo.

The 30th annual Critics Choice Awards will air live on E! on Sunday, January 12 at 7p, following a one hour red carpet pre-show. Chelsea Handler is returning as host for the third consecutive year. Though the show has been broadcast on The CW since 2017, E! was the first network to televise the awards, back in 2001.

Documentary “Uncharted” will premiere on Paramount+ on Tuesday, October 22. Produced by Abby Greensfelder’s Everywoman Studios for MTV Entertainment Studios, the film goes behind the scenes at Alicia Keys’ She Is The Music songwriting camp.

Max Original documentary “Louder: The Soundtrack of Change” drops Thursday, October 17. The film offers archival footage, interviews, and personal accounts from group of female artists.
