Paramount Global said it is implementing “Phase Two” of its workforce reduction on Tuesday, and that by the end of the day 90% of planned layoffs will be complete. Paramount Global is in the process of being purchased by Skydance Media in a deal valued at about $8 billion. In August, Paramount unveiled a plan to slash 15% of its workforce in an effort to cut $500 million in costs. The first round of layoffs began shortly after that announcement – including the closing of its Paramount TV Studios and the departure of several high-profile executives – with company officials saying the reductions would occur in three phases. Among those affected by the layoffs were special correspondent and “CBS Saturday Morning” co-host Jeff Glor, according to reports.
DirecTV has agreed to carry an additional 10 channels from A+E Networks, with a wide range of curated programming and popular anchor series from A&E, Lifetime, and The History Channel. The new channels include: “Crime 360,” “Deal Zone,” “UnXplained Zone,” “Movie Favorites by Lifetime,” “Duck Dynasty,” “Cold Case Files,” “Modern Marvels,” “Tiny House Nation” “Ice Road Truckers” and “Ax Men.”
Ryan Murphy defended his Netflix series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” after Erik Menendez said it was inaccurate, adding that he found it “interesting” that Menendez issued a statement against the series without seeing the show, according to reports. Speaking on the red carpet for another new series he is debuting this month – “Grotesquerie” on FX – Murphy said that it is “really, really hard if it’s your life, to see your life up on screen.” Still, Murphy defended the series depiction of the brothers, who were convicted in 1996 of the shotgun murders of their parents and are currently serving life sentences, adding that the bulk of the film centers around the abuse they claim they were subjected to by their parents.
A Nevada federal court hearing that could determine the fate of Rupert Murdoch’s media empire has concluded but there is no word of its ultimate outcome. Rupert Murdoch has been attempting to revise the trust in which his interests in Fox and News Corp., will be split among his four oldest children in the event of his death. While the original trust calls for ownership in Fox and News Corp., parent of Fox News and The Wall Street Journal, respectively, to be split evenly among the siblings, the elder Murdoch is looking to amend the trust to allow his son Lachlan, currently CEO of Fox and chairman of News Corp., to wield more power. According to Reuters, the other three children – Prudence, Elisabeth and James – could technically outvote the more conservative-leaning Lachlan on matters concerning the companies, setting the stage for future battles. Rupert Murdoch has proposed an amendment that would block the other siblings from interfering in how the properties were run, ensuring their conservative bent.
RedBird IMI purchased reality TV producer Efran Films, changing its name to Bright North Studios and naming former CNN chief and RedBird executive Jeff Zucker to its board of directors. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. This deal follows RedBird’s purchase of British TV and film producer All3Media for $1.45 billion from Warner Bros. Discover and Liberty Media.

MGM+ has ordered a new drama series – “Robin Hood” – from writers John Glenn (“SEAL Team,” “Eagle Eye”) and Jonathan English (“Ironclad,” “The Ark”) and Lionsgate Television. The series will premiere next year on MGM+ in the U.S. and will be available to MGM+ viewers in the U.K., Italy, Germany, Spain, Latin America, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. The 10-episode first season will shoot at PFI Studios in Serbia beginning in February.

Food Network’s October schedule welcomes all things Halloween, kicking off October 1 as the “Chopped: Legends” at 8p tournament comes to a conclusion, followed by “Guy’s Grocery Games” wrapping up its biggest team tournament on October 2 at 9p. The “Kids Baking Championship: Scary Good” Halloween special airs on October 7 at 8p, then it’s back-to-back epic finales starting with “Halloween Wars” on October 27 at 9p and “Outrageous Pumpkins” at 10p. October 28 at 9p is the finale of “Halloween Baking Championship” and “Last Bite Hotel” comes to a conclusion on October 29 at 9p with three VIP guests – “Iron Chefs” Alex Guarnaschelli, Cat Cora and Jose Garces. In primetime, there are new episodes of “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” while premieres of “Be My Guest with Ina Garten,” “The Kitchen,” and “The Pioneer Woman” are in daytime.
“Nashville” will begin airing on AXS TV September 30 and the network will broadcast all six seasons of the popular country music series. Originally debuting on ABC in 2012, “Nashville” stars Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere, with special guest appearances by a roster of country music stars including Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood, Zac Brown Band, Luke Bryan, Kacey Musgraves, Thomas Rhett, and Trisha Yearwood.

National Geographic’s documentary special “The Devil’s Climb” will premiere October 17 at 9p on National Geographic and will be available to stream the next day on Disney+ and Hulu. From Plimsoll Productions, “The Devil’s Climb” follows world-class rock climbers Alex Honnold and Tommy Caldwell on an epic expedition to summit Devil’s Thumb, a legendary 9,000-foot peak in the Alaskan wilderness surrounded by old-growth rainforest and known as one of the most dangerous mountains in North America.

Digital marketing agency WMX is offering a programmatic advertising tool – Sonar – that it says can reach every consumer touchpoint – from discovery to conversion – while maintaining customer privacy. According to WMX, Sonar uses first-party data, geographic targeting and custom audiences to maximize ad spend. Key features include omnichannel reach, from desktops to TVs, and AI-powered performance and analysis.

Last Friday’s primetime debut of the NASCAR Xfinity Series on The CW Network delivered the largest audience for a NASCAR Xfinity Series race since July 20 and generated the network’s highest ratings in more than eight months. The race drew an average of 906,000 Total Viewers according to Nielsen and peaked at more than one million total viewers between 9:30p-9:45p. Compared to the September 14 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Watkins Glen, viewership rose by double digit percentages across key demos including +52% in Adults 25-54 (234,000), +50% in Adults 18-49 (161,000) and +16% in Total Viewers. Compared to the Xfinity Series race on August 23, viewership increased by double-digit percentages in Total Viewers (+10%), Adults 18-49 (+31%) and Adults 25-54 (+26%). The NASCAR Xfinity Series continues on The CW this Saturday, September 28, with the first playoff race live from Kansas Speedway. Coverage begins with NASCAR Countdown Live (3:30p-4p), with the race beginning at 4p. Rick Allen serves as lead race announcer alongside analysts Jeff Burton and Steve Letarte.
The Pickleball Slam returns for its third edition on February 16 at 4p on ESPN with tennis legends and defending champions Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf competing in Las Vegas against tennis Hall of Famer Andy Roddick and Wimbledon finalist and former world No. 5, Eugenie Bouchard for a $1 million prize. Ryan Seacrest’s debut as host of “Wheel of Fortune” boosted the game show’s ratings to its largest premiere week audience in 5 years (since 2019), averaging 8.31 million total viewers, according to Nielsen. His first episode as host, which aired on September 9, was “Wheel of Fortune’s” highest-rated season premiere audience in 9 years (since 2015), with 9.63 million total viewers tuning in. During his first week as host, the show was the #1 show in syndication with a 4.88 HH rating and 8.31 million total viewers. “Wheel of Fortune” grew +21% among homes (4.88 HH rating vs. 4.03) and total viewers (8.31 million vs. 6.87 million) vs. last year’s premiere week. It was also up double-digit percentages in all key demos.
During the week of September 16-22, FOX News Channel’s “Gutfeld!” posted its best week since launch, powered by former President Trump’s appearance on the late-night show. This was Trump’s first late night interview during an election cycle since NBC’s “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” in 2016. Additionally, FNC continued to lead cable news combined throughout primetime and total day and marked 37 straight weeks leading basic cable with total day viewers. In primetime (8p-11p), FNC earned 2.5 million viewers and 310,000 in the 25-54 demo. In total day (6a-6a), FNC posted 1.5 million viewers and 203,000 in the 25-54 demo. Notably, FNC secured 74 of the week’s top 100 cable news telecasts with viewers.
