A recent study by Revry – “Q2 2024 Queer Entertainment Insights” – which analyzed more than 10 million viewer preferences across queer-centric content, showed that watch hours increased by 9% in the period, underlining the rising demand for inclusive and authentic LGBTQ+ content. Comedy was the most popular genre, commanding 38% of total watch-hours in the second quarter. Drama and documentaries collectively accounted for 47% of watch hours. Engagement was highest during weekends and evenings, according to the study, with weekend comedy marathons performing 16% above average, while evening studio films like “But I’m A Cheerleader” and “Stonewall” achieved 17% above average minutes watched.

Electric Entertainment has acquired the exclusive North American distribution rights to the full-length feature film “Long December.” The deal gives Electric all digital, non-theatrical, home video and broadcast rights in the US and Canada.

Fox series “9-1-1-Lone Star” will officially end its run with the upcoming fifth season. The final 12-episode season of the drama series starring Rob Lowe will premiere September 23, with the series finale scheduled for early 2025.

Fox Entertainment and Veteran television writer and producer Hank Steinberg have entered a broadcast direct deal that will expand his current collaboration with the company to develop new, Fox-owned scripted dramas for the network. Known for creating the police procedural drama “Without a Trace” for CBS, the post-apocalyptic drama “The Last Ship” for TNT and ABC’s social justice legal drama “For Life,” Steinberg is currently executive producer of the Fox medical drama “Doc,” slated to debut as part of the network’s midseason lineup.

Academy Award nominees Melissa McCarthy (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) and Clive Owen (“Closer”) will star in the upcoming Paramount+ limited series “JonBenét Ramsey” as JonBenét’s parents Patsy and John Bennett Ramsey. Produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, production will begin in Calgary, Canada, with Richard LaGravenese (“Behind the Candelabra”) serving as showrunner and executive producer. Four of the eight episodes, including the first episode, will be directed by Anne Sewitsky (“Presumed Innocent”), who will also serve as executive producer.

Peacock has given a straight-to-series order to “The ‘Burbs,” a new series adaptation of the 1989 film of the same name. Celeste Hughey (“Palm Royale,” “Dead to Me”) will write and executive produce the series starring Keke Palmer (“Nope,” “Password”), who will also executive produce. Seth MacFarlane (“Ted”), Erica Huggins and Aimee Carlson for Fuzzy Door will executive produce alongside Brian Grazer (“Empire,” “Arrested Development”), Kristen Zolner and Natalie Berkus for Imagine Entertainment. Dana Olsen, the writer of the 1989 film, will serve as co-executive producer on the series. The series will film in Los Angeles at the same location as the original 1989 film, the backlot of Universal Studios Hollywood.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

HGTV’s newest spinoff series “Bargain Block New Orleans” will premiere Wednesday October 9 at 9p. The five-episode series pairs renovation experts and partners Keith Bynum and Evan Thomas, stars of the network’s Detroit-based “Bargain Block,” to restore rundown houses in yet another iconic city.

Telemundo is launching a new phase of its show, “En Casa con Telemundo,” with a two-hour live format beginning September 9 at 1p. With the expansion of “En Casa con Telemundo,” the network’s live programming now extends to 15 hours from Monday to Friday.

The seven-episode Max Original adult animated series “Creature Commandos,” written and executive produced by James Gunn, debuts December 5 on Max followed by one episode weekly until January 16.

Paramount+’s new original series, “Landman, starring Oscar winner Billy Bob Thornton will premiere on Sunday, November 17 on Paramount+. The series will launch with two episodes and subsequent episodes of the 10-episode first season will be available every Sunday. Co-created by Oscar nominee Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace, “Landman” is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, 101 Studios and Sheridan’s Bosque Ranch Productions exclusively for Paramount+.

COMING UP

Ahead of its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, Hulu and Disney+ will premiere original film “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band” on October 25.

It’s beginning to look a lot like the “Most Uplifting Christmas Ever” as UPtv gears up for its annual yuletide promotion with 50 days of Christmas programming beginning November 3 with nearly 100 titles, including 12 premiere movies and an all-new Gaither music Christmas special “Gaither Vocal Band: New Star Shining.” The network will celebrate the season of giving for a third year with a “Most Uplifting Christmas Ever” Sweepstakes, where one lucky grand prize winner will receive a $10,000 cash prize and an additional $10,000 will be donated to the charity of their choice by UPtv.

Hulu documentary, “Child Star,” premieres September 17. Directed by musician, actor and former child star Demi Lovato, the documentary explores the highs and lows of growing up in the spotlight. Lovato sits down with iconic former child stars such as Drew Barrymore, Kenan Thompson, Christina Ricci, Raven-Symoné, JoJo Siwa, Alyson Stoner, and more, to reflect on their personal experiences working in the entertainment industry.

The original film “Caddo Lake,” from producer M. Night Shyamalan and writer-directors Celine Held and Logan George, debuts Thursday, October 10 on Max.

“The Real Full Monty,” a two-hour special in which a group of male celebrities will volunteer to bare all to raise awareness for prostate, testicular and colorectal cancer testing and research, will air December 9 at 8p on Fox.

STREAMING

Disney Branded Television said the next seven one-to-three-minute “Bluey Minisodes” episodes will begin streaming Monday, October 7 on Disney+ and will roll out on Disney Jr., Disney Channel and Disney Jr. On Demand throughout the week. The first batch of seven “Bluey Minisodes” episodes were released on July 3.

Dr. Seuss Enterprises has teamed up with Little Dot Studios (an All3Media company) on a new Dr. Seuss-themed YouTube channel. The new channel already has a full slate of always-on original programming produced by Little Dot Studios, including read-alongs as part of the “Dr. Seuss Storytime” series and phonics games like as “Learn to Read with Dr. Seuss Babies.” Other content includes “The Lorax’s Nature Club,” “The Cat in The Hat’s Quirky Quiz” and drawing series “Draw Your Dream Pet.” The channel will also feature Spanish-language content for bilingual and Spanish-speaking households.

Paramount+ film “We Will Dance Again,” a documentary about the October 7 Hamas terror attack on the international Nova Music Festival, will premiere on the service on September 24. The See It Now Studios Original Documentary won two awards at Doc Edge in June, including Best International Editing and the In Truth We Trust category award.

IAB Tech Lab has released the IAB Tech Lab Privacy Taxonomy, which is now available for public comment. Developed under the guidance of IAB Tech Lab’s Privacy Implementation & Accountability Task Force, the new framework addresses the need for businesses to manage personal data more effectively and ensure compliance with privacy regulations. “Our industry is at a critical juncture where the need for a unified approach to data privacy has never been more urgent,” said Jared Moscow, Director of Product, Privacy, IAB Tech Lab. “The IAB Tech Lab Privacy Taxonomy is more than just a technical standard—it’s a foundational shift in managing data privacy. The Privacy Taxonomy enables businesses to systematically approach the complexities of data privacy with a common framework.” The Privacy Taxonomy provides a standardized language for defining, classifying, and communicating personal data, a structured framework enabling organizations to accurately label and understand the data they possess in an interoperable way with their business partners, facilitating more transparent and efficient data processing, compliance management, and privacy practices.

When it comes to digital marketing, most multi-location brands remain largely invisible in local searches, with the average brand failing to appear in 3 out of 4 local searches, according to the new SOCi Visibility Index. Key takeaways include:
– Search: While multi-location brands are doing a good job of claiming and completing their local profiles on Google, there is room for better optimization and improvement on Yelp and Facebook.
– Reputation: Less than half of reviews get a response from businesses on Google, and response rates on Yelp and Facebook are even lower.
– Social: Multi-location brands are successfully building audiences on Facebook by posting a healthy mix of photo and video content, but audience engagement on average is still low.
– This year’s index shows high recognizability does not equal high visibility – household brands like Chick-fil-A, Target, and Walgreens did not make SOCi’s 100 Most Visible list, while niche and regional brands are more visible online by showing up in non-branded searches related to their most important keywords.

“High local visibility in popular search and social sites where consumers are spending the majority of their digital time is no longer just a competitive edge—it’s a necessity. Yet many well-known brands are missing out on this opportunity by neglecting their digital presence at the local level,” said Monica Ho, CMO of SOCi. “Brands that optimize their local presence are not only more visible but also more trusted, driving significantly higher engagement, reach, and ultimately foot traffic and revenue to their businesses.

LG Ad Solutions has launched Native Screensaver Ads, a full-screen advertising experience that activates across the Home Screen, LG Channels and Content Store on LG Smart TVs. LG Ad Solutions found, contrary to the belief that viewers attention is limited once a TV screen is idle, that Screensaver ads increased brand awareness on average by 2.5-times. “In the past, a Screensaver ad might have indicated that viewers had left the room, but today’s viewing habits are markedly different. Now, 93% of viewers multitask while watching TV, engaging in activities like messaging, shopping, browsing social media, or playing games on their phones,” said Dave Rudnick, Chief Technology Officer, LG Ad Solutions. A study conducted by LG and measured by Lucid found that by strategically aligning ad delivery with specific user states, users do indeed pay attention to ads, even during downtime. Additional findings included:
– 2.9 percentage points lift in Brand Awareness. 2.5X above benchmark.
– 16.2 percentage points lift in Brand Awareness for Women with a Household Income $80K+.
– 19.7 percentage points lift in Brand Consideration for Adults 45+.

Tennis Channel plans to dub English commentary during live matches in Spain into Spanish in real-time using an artificial intelligence-driven feature in a partnership with AI-translation platform LingoPal.Ai. The channel will beta test the feature during the women’s Guadalajara Open Akron presented by Santander event in Mexico on September 9-15 for feedback from audiences of its locally programmed Spanish channel, available in that country since August 2023. Although the matches will be announced and analyzed in English in the U.S. on Tennis Channel and Tennis Channel+, the commentary will be translated into Spanish in Spain for the entire tournament. Tennis channel will include a series of on-screen alerts whenever it shows content translated from its original language by artificial intelligence.

Pay TV Channel Pickbox has purchased a drama package from distributor Sphere Abacus (formerly Abacus Media Rights) for Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Bulgaria that includes, among others, “Catch Me A Killer,” produced by CMAK Films with LMP Night Train Media.

Seven.One Studios International has acquired “If Pigs Could Talk,” a new documentary special where a group of scientists embark on a unique experiment to decipher the language of pigs. Using advanced AI technology, they are able to translate pigs’ grunts, squeals, and snorts into human language for the first time.

Mattel, Inc. and WildBrain have secured multiple new distribution deals internationally for animated kids’ shows “Fireman Sam” and “Polly Pocket,” based on the Mattel brands. The new deals are part of a multi-year co-development, production, distribution and licensing agreement between Mattel and WildBrain.

Viasat World will launch its new crime-themed television channel, Viasat True Crime, in Czechia, Slovakia and Slovenia on September 17.

BBC Studios Kids & Family Productions and Trustbridge Entertainment have joined forces on “My Friend Maisy,” a 2D animated series starring the titular character and her friends from the bestselling book series.
