The NBA has filed a motion to dismiss Warner Bros. Discovery’s media rights lawsuit, on the grounds that the TNT Sports parent improperly sought to rewrite the nature of its matching rights while “attempting instead to save billions of dollars.” The league, which rejected WBD’s matching rights proposal after signing deals with Amazon, Disney and NBCUniversal, claims WBD changed structural details and presumed rights that the NBA says WBD didn’t have, maintaining, “Far from accepting each term of Amazon’s offer, TBS’s revisions constituted a counteroffer that the NBA was free to reject.” Warner is accusing the NBA of structuring Amazon’s $1.8 billion per year package of games differently for “the sole purpose of attempting to thwart TBS’s matching rights.” Warner Bros. Discovery has until September has until September 20 to respond.

Warner Bros. Discovery is “beefing up” original programming on TNT, according to The Wall Street Journal, increasing spend on dramas that will appeal to the male audience tuned in for the network’s sports programming. Like many media companies, cost-conscious WBD has pared down original content in recent years. But with the possible loss of NBA rights, the company – in addition to scooping up other sports rights – is looking at offering more fresh programming. Films from the Warner Bros. movie library could also be rebooted for made-for-TV movies or series, sources told WSJ.

Omnichannel advertising has seen 25% year-over-year growth, according to Mediaocean’s 2024 H2 Market Report. Asked about the most important consumer trends they are watching, 56% of marketers noted CTV/streaming, followed by generative AI (55%), TikTik/social video (47%), e-commerce everywhere (35%), consumer privacy (28%), gaming (16%), political & advocacy trends (15%), and the metaverse (13%).

Peacock handed a straight-to-series order for South Florida-set, female-led crime thriller “M.I.A.” from “Ozark” co-creator Bill Dubuque. The series comes from studio MRC, with Karen Campbell (“Dexter”) serving as executive producer and showrunner. Stefano Sollima (“Gomorarrah”) will direct and executive produce.

NEW & RETURNING SHOWS

Netflix’s “A Man on the Inside” (fka “A Classic Spy”) will debut in November. The comedy reunites Ted Danson and “The Good Place” producer Mike Schur.

Season two of Oxgen’s “Snapped: Behind Bars” premieres Sunday, September 1 at 7p. The series speaks to women convicted of murder years after their cases were covered on “Snapped.”

“Making Change: The Most Significant Political Films of All Time,” a nine-week limited series showcasing films from the list by The New Republic, will premiere September 6at 8p on Turner Classic Movies. TCM host Ben Mankiewicz and guests including Former Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates, Stacey Abrams, Melissa Etheridge, Sally Field, Spike Lee, Steven Spielberg and John Turturro will dive into cinema’s most impactful political films.

The science and secrets behind animal survival are explored in National Geographic’s “Animal Genius,” premiering Sunday, September 8 at 10p.

Kartoon Studios announced a second season of the animated kids’ series “Shaq’s Garage,” titled “Shaq’s Garage: Maximum Horsepower.” “The first season of ‘Shaq’s Garage’ drove significant growth,” said Todd Steinman, President of Toon Networks at Kartoon Studios. “The second season has even more high-energy adventures, heartwarming moments, and positive messages.”

Insight TV announced the launch of its new wellness travel series, “Journey Within” co-produced and hosted by Brazilian model and television personality Marilia Moreno The series will debut on INTRAVEL and Fubo in the US, as well as INFAST channel carriers globally.

Well, that didn’t take long. Soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo’s YouTube channel launched on Wednesday, and within 90 minutes had drawn one million subscribers, the fastest-ever channel to do so. By Sunday morning the number was 43 million, another record.

INSIGHTS

YouTube is becoming increasing indispensable to consumers. In a recent Hub study, YouTube Premium was ranked as a must-have source by 75 per cent of users, a fraction of a percent behind Spotify – and the rest of the top 5 included YouTube, YouTube TV, and YouTube Music. Jon Giegengack, principal at Hub Entertainment Research, explains the appeal of the platform, and its impact on TV.

How do you explain the popularity of YouTube?
YouTube has lots of differentiators, especially for young people.
· It’s free.
· There are ads, but the ad experience is better than many other platforms: e.g., tolerable ad loads, spots are more likely to be relevant to the person watching, for some ads, there’s the option to skip if you don’t want to watch them.
· YouTube has far more use cases than “regular” TV shows: there are short form or long form videos. You can use YouTube as a tutorial center or a music player. Plus, the same app has things to watch on a TV screen and on mobile.

The content may be technically “non-premium.” But that distinction means less to Gen Z viewers, and there’s no other platform that offers more utility in one place.

How will YouTube impact the businesses of broadcast and streaming?
It’s already happening. In July, YouTube became the first streaming platform to crack 10% of total viewing in Nielsen’s Gauge (that’s the same share as Netflix and Disney+, combined.) The more time viewers spend on YouTube, the less they have available to watch other TV platforms. And the more reason advertisers have to allocate their ad budgets to YouTube instead of those other companies.

How might broadcast and other streamers benefit from YouTube?
In the short term, those companies can leverage social video to drive discovery of their own shows. For instance, NBC and TikTok have credited the resurgence of “Suits” to scenes posted on TikTok. In the long term, YouTube provides a blueprint of how to make entertainment relevant to the next generation of consumers: higher volume and shorter production times; creating and leveraging communities (not just content); and leveraging the interests of users across categories (like short-form, gaming, music, or podcasts) instead of being limited to long form video.

M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Watchers” makes its streaming debut on Max on Friday, August 30. The film follows an artist stalked by mysterious creatures.
