Former president Donald Trump said he will “absolutely” debate Democratic presidential contender Kamala Harris in September. “I would be willing to do more than one debate, actually,” Trump said on a call with reporters. ABC is scheduled to host a debate on September 10 that Trump and Biden had agreed to, though Trump has suggested that the event be moved to Fox News, rather than “very biased ABC.”
Peacock had the best year-over-year improvement in its bottom line since it launched in 2020, noted Comcast in its 2Q24 earnings report. The streamer shed 500,000 paid subscribers during the quarter, dropping to 33 million, but is up 38% versus the prior year period, and revenue rose 28% to $1 billion. Basketball should give Peacock some bounce – the streamer landed 50 exclusive regular-season and post-season NBA games, including national Monday night games and doubleheaders, in a deal Comcast struck with the league, said Comcast President Mike Cavanagh on an earnings call. WNBA games are also in the mix.
As for Comcast’s pending agreement with the NBA, Cavanagh said a deal will officially be announced soon. While Warner Bros. Discovery said it is asserting its right to match one of the three deals the NBA has agreed to, “We don’t believe that the resolution of matching rights will affect the package that we expect to be awarded,” said Cavanagh.
TelevisaUnivision reported a 2% rise in ad revenue in the US, to $462.4 million for the second quarter. The Upfront process is “taking a little longer” than usual to complete due to increased ad-supported streaming options, said CEO Wade Davis during his company’s earnings call, but added that could be offset by advertisers turning to the generally more expensive scatter market.
Now that Google has reversed its long-held plan to deprecate third-party cookies, explaining in a blog post it will instead “introduce a new experience in Chrome that lets people make an informed choice that applies across their web browsing,” what are industry experts saying? Some thoughts…

Billionaire investor Ike Perlmutter has sold his entire stake – 25.6 million shares – in Disney, according to the WSJ. The sale comes after Perlmutter was on the losing side of a bitter proxy fight. Perlmutter became a major shareholder in Disney in 2009, when he sold Marvel Entertainment to Disney for over $4 billion. Perlmutter says he sold his shares between early April, when a campaign by activist investor Nelson Peltz to win two seats was defeated, and mid-July.
CBS is making some moves. Starting this week, the Wednesday and Thursday episodes of “Big Brother” will move from 9p to 8p. Sunday’s edition will remain at 9p. “Let’s Make a Deal in Primetime” specials” will air at 8p on Fridays starting August 16, followed at 9p by “Lingo.”
MTV’s “Caught in the Act: Unfaithful” has been renewed for season three. The investigative series is set to return this fall.
The next Bridgerton sibling looking for love on Netflix drama “Bridgerton” will be bohemian Benedict. The second-oldest brother was featured in a teaser for season four.
Viewership of the first season of “Veep” was up 353% on Max on Monday, following the news that Vice President Kamala Harris had won enough delegates to nab the Democratic nomination for president. The comedy had 2.2 million total minutes watched, versus 486,000 the day before.

YouTube ad sales grew 13% year over year to $8.66 billion, reported Alphabet, as the company beat earnings expectations for the quarter with a year-over-year rise in revenue of 14%. “Our strong performance this quarter highlights ongoing strength in Search and momentum in Cloud,” said Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai. “We are innovating at every layer of the AI stack. Our longstanding infrastructure leadership and in-house research teams position us well as technology evolves and as we pursue the many opportunities ahead.”

Israeli security startup Wiz has ended talks with Google parent Alphabet on a proposed $23 billion deal, according to a Wiz memo. Instead, the company will proceed with its previously stated goal of generating $1 billion in recurring revenue ahead of an initial public offering. “Saying no to such humbling offers is tough, but with our exceptional team, I feel confident in making that choice,” wrote Wiz CEO Assaf Rappaport. The deal would have been Google’s largest acquisition ever.
