TV legend Bob Newhart, whose deadpan delivery and dry sense of humor served as the anchor of TV sitcom classics “The Bob Newhart Show,” (1972-1978) and “Newhart” (1982-1990), died Thursday July 18. He was 94. Newhart was the inspiration for countless comedians and dominated ratings for the better part of two decades for CBS, first as bemused Chicago psychologist Dr. Robert Hartley on “The Bob Newhart Show” and later as befuddled author Dick Loudon on “Newhart.” Despite several Emmy Award nominations for those shows, Newhart didn’t win until 2013, when he captured the trophy for his guest-spot portrayal as “Professor Proton” in “The Big Bang Theory” (2007-2019). A Grammy winner for his 1960 comedy album “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart” (the first comedy album to top the Billboard charts), Newhart attracted a new generation of fans through movies – as Papa Elf in “Elf” – as well as guest spots in dozens of TV shows. The finale for “Newhart” – with its ending nod to “The Bob Newhart Show” – is considered one of the best in TV history.
Warner Bros, Discovery is reportedly considering whether to split off its streaming and studio businesses from its linear networks, according to a piece in the Financial Times. According to FT, the company could sell assets or house its studio and streaming assets in a separate venue free from WBD’s overall near-$40 billion debt load. The split-off would be an attempt to boost WBD’s sagging stock price – down 27% this year – and comes shortly after news that the media giant would layoff nearly 1,000 workers, mostly in finance functions. News of a potential deal goosed WBD’s stock up nearly 6% in afternoon trading Thursday.
Members of Hollywood trade union IATSE have voted to ratify their contract with film and TV studios, avoiding a shutdown. More than 85% of IATSE members voted to ratify two new three-year deals – The Hollywood Basic Agreement and The Area Standards Agreement – which increased wages, bolstered health and pension benefits and addressed some concerns around artificial intelligence. |

National Geographic is partnering with Sir David Attenborough on a feature-length documentary special about the health of the world’s oceans – “David Attenborough: Ocean.” The film is being produced by Silverback with the backing of All3Media International, Ocean Ten Media, Minderoo Productions, National Geographic Society and Pristine Seas, Don Quixote ASBL and The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. It will debut in theaters in 2025 before premiering globally on National Geographic and streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
Karim Diané (“One of Us Is Lying”) and Zoë Steiner (“Significant Others”) have joined the cast of Paramount+ original series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.” Produced by CBS Studios, the new series will begin production later this summer. Diané and Steiner will play cadets, joining previously announced cadets Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard and George Hawkins, as well as cast members Holly Hunter as the captain and chancellor of Starfleet Academy, and Paul Giamatti as the season’s villain.

A new season of “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood” premieres on PBS KIDS on August 12 and for the first time will feature stories from the points of view of Daniel Tiger and his best friends. Each half-hour episode will include one story from Daniel’s own perspective and another from the viewpoints of other characters.

Asian content streaming platform Rakuten Viki will debut animated feature film “Yumi’s Cells: The Movie,” based on the popular Webtoon and live action K-Drama, in the U.S. on July 19. Google has become the official search AI partner for Team USA during the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, highlighting athlete stories and enhancing NBCU’s coverage of the events. Google will integrate sponsored content formats – including ways to search and explore the Olympic & Paralympic Games with Google Search and related AI features – within NBCUniversal’s extensive coverage. NBCUniversal’s content will leverage Google’s suite of consumer apps products, including Search, Maps and Gemini. NBCU has created “Explain the Games,” which will showcase Google Search’s AI Overviews and be used during daytime and primetime coverage across all of NBCUniversal’s Olympic linear networks and Peacock. And “Try it with Google Gemini” allows viewers to follow Chief Superfan Commentator Leslie Jones, while audiences can see immersive views of Olympic venues in the city like Versailles, Stade Roland Garros and the Aquatics Centre provided by Google Maps Platform’s Photorealistic 3D Tiles.
Comcast’s enhanced 4K from Xfinity will premiere in time for the Paris Olympics and be available on USA Network’s 24/7 coverage of the Games. Enhanced 4K brings together 4K video delivered over Comcast’s network at its highest bitrate, Dolby Vision for life-like picture quality, Dolby Atmos immersive audio, and ultra-low latency only seconds behind all the live action unfolding in Paris. The launch follows a successful trial of the technology conducted during the 2024 Super Bowl. Moving forward, Comcast said enhanced 4K will be the new quality standard for live sports delivered in 4K on X1.
Overall TV ad impressions were down nearly 4% during the first six months of 2024, according to iSpot TV’s most recent Transparency Report, but the Big 4 networks saw their primetime reach grow by double-digits. According to the report, 7,100 advertisers aired 24.2 million national linear TV ads (10.3 million minutes) across 179 industries; household TV ad impressions were 4.2 trillion in the first half of the year, a 3.73% decrease as most linear dayparts saw ad reach decline; and news programming increased from 18% to 19% of all TV ad impressions year-over-year. Sports programming grew from 12% to 13% year-over-year, while the biggest gainers were the NHL (TV ad impressions up 49%), and the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, which doubled reach vs. the 2023 event. The Big 4 broadcast networks increased primetime SOV by 14.3%, while in the Spanish language segment, Telemundo ad deliveries were up 16% in prime, and the network broke into the top 20 overall (#18).
Yahoo DSP has integrated its cookie-less identity solution – Yahoo Connect ID – with data collaboration platform LiveRamp’s Authenticated Traffic Solution for publishers. Allen Media Group (The Weather Channel), CarGurus, DISH Media, FloSports, and Philo have already adopted Yahoo ConnectID, and more top publishers are expected to follow. The collaboration allows all 21,000 publisher domains that have adopted LiveRamp’s Authenticated Traffic Solution to seamlessly integrate with Yahoo ConnectID with minimal effort and benefit from additional flexibility to meet marketer demand.
Social media platform X saw some drastic declines in June, as advertising fell month-over-month and year-over-year, after seeing growth in CTRs and CPMs earlier in 2024, according to Tracer. CTRs declined 78% month-over-month, reflecting a sharp downturn in user activity. Similarly, CPMs decreased 17% from May to June, suggesting that advertisers are also retreating from X. Tracer analyzed both year-over-year and month-over month percentage changes in key metrics across digital platforms, including X, TikTok, Instagram and LinkedIn. Tracer found that TikTok CPM rose 16% year-over-year, while Instagram saw an 89% increase in CTR’s, while YouTube and Pinterest experienced increases of 77% and 385%, respectively.
Toyota and HBO Max had the most impressions among advertisers in local DMAs from June 16 to July 16, according to the AdImpact Platform. Progressive led advertisers in impressions secured with 3.267 billion, followed by Toyota with 2.899 billion and HBO Max with 2.891 billion. In total, about 396 billion impressions were secured by all advertisers across 210 DMAs, a 13.3% decrease from May 16 – June 15. New York led all DMAs with impressions secured at 30.215 billion, followed by Los Angeles at 13.325 billion and Philadelphia at 10.870 billion. Nexstar Broadcasting Group delivered the most impressions to advertisers in local DMAs with 15.463 billion, followed by Gray Television at 12.657 billion and E.W. Scripps at 12.634 billion

Fox Sports summer soccer coverage attracted 1.2 billion views on social media around the UEFA Euro and CONMEBOL Copa America tournaments, on par with the 2022 Men’s World Cup, the most viewed soccer event in Fox Sports digital history (1.2 billion). CONMEBOL Copa America had an average minute audience of 60,000, up 493% from the 2021 tournament and making it the most streamed Copa America event in Fox Sports history. The Argentina-Columbia CONMEBOL Copa America final (338,000 AMA) and the Spain-England UEFA Euro 2024 final (227,000 AMA) were the two most-streamed non-World Cup soccer matches in Fox Sports history, while Alexi Lalas’ “State of the Union” podcast was the ranked as the No. 1 soccer podcast in America on Apple Podcast Charts for the first time. Fox Soccer social media channel added more than 1 million new followers, aided by vertical streaming for “Fox Soccer Now.”
CBS Sports has reached an exclusive, multi-year, multi-platform rights deal with the English Football League, offering the widest distribution of EFL matches ever in the United States. CBS Sports will air at least 250 EFL matches each season across the Championship, League One, League Two, Carabao Cup and Bristol Street Motors Trophy beginning in August and continuing through the end of the 2027-28 season. Matches will air on Paramount+ with select matches airing on CBS Sports Network and CBS Sports Golazo Network.
“Access Hollywood” will present a countdown to the Paris Olympic Games beginning July 22. In addition to comprehensive coverage of the Games with Kit Hoover, Scott Evans and Zuri Hall on the ground in Paris and Mario Lopez anchoring the show from Hollywood, Access Hollywood will feature exclusive interviews with athletes and celebrities, an inside look at the exclusive Olympics arrival party, behind the scenes coverage of Team USA, fashion and history segments and visits to locations in the city that have served as backdrops to notable films, TV shows and music videos.
Gray Media will air a live broadcast of The Harlem Globetrotters, the first for the team in 40 years, from its sports residency at American Dream in New Jersey on August 18. The event tips off at 7p on local television stations owned by Gray.
“ESPN8: The Ocho” will air across all ESPN platforms beginning August 1 through August 4, offering 54 hours of unique, obscure sports, including over 21 hours of live content. Banana Ball will anchor each night in primetime from Louisville, KY, while Rock Hill, SC, will host live events for fans hoping to cheer on Ocho athletes for the third year in a row. “The Ocho Show,” returns to the studio with Victoria Arlen, Arda Öcal and Cristina Alexander, while original podcast, “Never Tell Me the Odds,” featuring Clinton Yates, Öcal and Ryan McGee, joins the annual summer event. On Friday, select sports will be available in Spanish on ESPN Deportes.

Fox News Channel continued to reap ratings gold from the Republican National Convention on July 17, becoming the only network to grow its audience each night in primetime versus its 2016 RNC average. FNC’s special coverage “FOX News Democracy 2024: The Republican National Convention,” which featured vice-presidential candidate JD Vance’s speech, averaged 6.7 million viewers and nearly 1,118,000 in A25-54.
Shark Week returned to Discovery Channel on July 7, helping the network rank as the #1 primetime cable network, excluding news and sports, reaching 25 million total viewers across Discovery Channel, Max and discovery+, a 10% increase over last year. Throughout the week, Discovery owned seven of the top 10 telecasts among Adults 25-54 with “Expedition Unknown: Sharks vs. Nazis in Paradise” (#3), “Jaws vs. Leviathan” (#4), “Caught! When Sharks Attack” (#6), “Great White Serial Killer: Sea of Blood” (#7), “Great White Danger Zone” (#8), “Makozilla” (#9), and “Belly of the Beast: Bigger and Bloodier” (#10).
