ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos nabbed the first television interview with President Joe Biden following his troubling performance at the presidential debate last week. A first look of the interview will air Friday, July 5, on “World News Tonight with David Muir,” with portions airing on “Good Morning America” Saturday and Sunday. The extended interview will air Sunday, July 7, on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” and “Good Morning America” on Monday, July 8.

Paramount Global is back to talking to potential buyers after the company’s merger talks with Skydance Media came to an abrupt in June. A group of investors including BET CEO Scott Mills and CC Capital’s Chinh Chu is holding exclusive talks with the company about acquiring BET Media Group for about $1.6 billion, reports Bloomberg. BET was in play last year, but Paramount withdrew from discussions in August.

Barry Diller is considering making a bid for National Amusements, which would give him a controlling stake in Paramount Global, reports The New York Times. The media mogul’s company, IAC, has signed a non-disclosure agreement with National Amusements as he explores a deal. Diller, named head of Paramount Pictures in 1974, tried once before to buy the company, but was outbid by Sumner Redstone in 1994.

Meanwhile, CNBC has reported that Paramount Global is exploring the possibility of merging its streaming business with an existing streaming platform. CNBC also said Paramount is considering a deal with a technology/media-focused company.

New advertisers for Warner Bros. Discovery’s annual Shark Week, kicking off July 7, include Ford, Harbor Freight and Universal Pictures. Gorilla Glue, PNC Bank, Sherwin Williams, Sport Clips and University of Phoenix are returning partners. Sponsorships include convergent opportunities such as custom video, promotional elements like tagged tune-in, billboards and in-program messaging, and streaming collections. “Shark Week is a pop-culture phenomenon that has become synonymous with summer programming, and our viewers look forward to the entertaining, innovative shark-themed programming year-after-year,” said Greg Regis, EVP, Advertising Sales, Warner Bros. Channel Factory, the brand suitability and contextual advertising platform, Ad Fontes Media, a tech company that rates the news for bias and reliability, have partnered to give advertisers greater confidence to invest in news content. Adtech startup Advocado has rebranded as Veil Global Technologies. The new name is tied to the digital audio watermarking technology, VEIL (video encoded visible light), which Advocado acquired from Veil Interactive Technologies in 2021. “For too long the advertising industry has been dependent on a multitude of fingerprinting technologies that do not interoperate,” said Steve Saslow, the company’s executive chairman. “With Veil Watermarking, the supply chain will be connected, efficient and focused.”

The Advertising Research Foundation announced an enhancement to its Workforce Initiative for Diversity and Excellence in the form of a grant of $50,000 from the Nielsen Foundation. The foundation prioritizes initiatives that power and advance inclusive innovation and representation in the media and technology industries, including media and technology careers. It’s the fourth consecutive year of support from the Nielsen Foundation.

Intuit Credit Karma’s Airport ad was 608% more effective than the average Banking & Finance creative during the first half of 2024, according to TV outcomes company EDO, which analyzed spots in15 industries. Tops in alcohol was Ciroc’s Lemons (271% more effective), Omnipod’s Bath Time and Pizza (+459%), Magic Spoon’s Tastiest Revolution (+1633%), and Long John Silver’s (+294%). What was their secret? “The most engaging ads of H1 utilized a range of creative tactics to pique consumer interest — including bright, punchy colors, laugh-out-loud comedy, and musical cues from diverse artists like Aretha Franklin and Charli XCX,” said Laura Grover, SVP, Head of Client Solutions at EDO. “What they all have in common is an ability to inspire viewers to take action in the minutes after the ads aired — a proven predictor of the future sales that will grow their businesses.”

In-game advertising solution Anzu and carbon intelligence platform Cedara have launched a carbon measurement and compensation solution for intrinsic in-game advertising. Cedara’s GARM-compliant methodology aims to enhance the visibility of intrinsic in-game advertising’s carbon footprint for the first time. “As the intrinsic in-game advertising space continues to mature and become a larger part of ad budgets everywhere, understanding its environmental impact is crucial,” said Anzu Co-Founder and CPO Ben Fenster. “Partnering with Cedara is another step towards sustainability in this sector. New six-episode thriller “The Dispatcher,” starring Patrick Brammall (“Colin from Accounts”) as a police dispatcher, is headed to Apple TV+. “The Dispatcher,” set in Australia, is adapted by writer and executive producer Kris Mrksa (“Requiem”) from Ryan David Jahn’s book of the same name. The series is executive produced by Jamie Laurenson and Hakan Kousetta at 60Forty Films, with executive producers Kris Mrksa and Joanna Werner at Werner Film Productions.

It’s cost-cutting time at Blackstone-backed studio Candle Media, which is splitting into two divisions, reports Semafor. Animation projects will be folded into Moonbug Entertainment (“CoCoMelon”), while the live action productions companies, including Hello Sunshine, Exile, True Stories and Faraway Road, will be rebranded as Candle Studios. It’s not a crisis, but a matter of timing, co-founder Kevin Mayer told Semafor. “We paid at the top of the market,” acknowledged the exec. “Have the financials borne out the way we would like, to have to support the price we paid? Probably not…. Talk to us in two or three years.”

Canada’s Mercury Filmworks (“The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse”) and France and Canada’s Blue Spirit Studios (“Rocket and Groot”), part of TF1 Group’s Newen Studios, announced the launch of “Seraphim,” an animation pipeline designed to produce “high end animation that melds the artistic expressions of 2D and 3D techniques blurring the line between concept art and production.”

Casting notes: Jeremy Irons has joined the season four cast of Apple TV+ drama “The Morning Show.” The Oscar winner for “Reversal of Fortune” will play the father of Jennifer Aniston’s character….Kevin Bacon (“City on a Hill”) and Glenn Howerton (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) are onboard “Sirens,” Netflix’s dark comedy starring Julianne Moore, Meghann Fahy and Milly Alcock.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

We TV is launching a new series, “Wiggin’ Out with Tokyo Stylez,” next month. The 8-episode docuseries follows celebrity hairstylist and entrepreneur Stylez. “Tokyo Stylez’s dedication, discipline and natural born talent has made her one of the most sought-after hairstylists in the industry with an impressive roster of A-list clients,” said Brett Dismuke, Head of Content, We TV and ALLBLK. “Wiggin’ Out With Tokyo Stylez pulls back the curtain on her life as viewers continue to get to know Tokyo, the dynamic stylist, but also Tokyo, the person who is doing her best to manage it all and build her empire.” The series will stream on ALLBLK.

Dating show “Too Hot to Handle” returns to Netflix for season six on Friday, July 19.

“Strange & Suspicious,” digging into unsolved, strange stories, premieres Monday, July 8 in 12 major markets including the FOX O&O’s in New York, Los Angeles and Detroit. The show hails from TMZ Studios.

CNN Original Series will debut a two-hour special from the HLN series “How It Really Happened with Jesse L. Martin.” The two-hour report, “The Atlanta Olympic Bombing” premieres Sunday, July 21 at 9p, streaming live for pay TV subscribers on CNN.com, CNN OTT and mobile apps.

Coinciding with WBD’s Shark Week will be the inaugural Bark Week, on Cineverse FAST channel Dog Whisperer With Cesar Millan. The channel will also be available on Pluto TV.

The Florida Panthers have signed a multi-year agreement with Scripps Sports to locally broadcast Panthers hockey free for residents of Miami/Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Fort Myers. The E.W. Scripps Company can televise all locally produced Panthers preseason, regular-season and round one games of the postseason with distribution on cable.
