At the annual Paramount stockholder presentation, non-executive chairwoman Shari Redstone didn’t address the status of the company’s merger talks with Skydance Media, but expressed her confidence in the company’s top executives. The Office of the CEO, made up of George Cheeks, Brian Robbins and Chris McCarthy, outlined their plan to cut $500 million in costs, including layoffs, and said they are exploring a joint venture for streamer Paramount+ and a shift in streaming strategy that focuses on company IP like SpongeBob SquarePants and Star Trek. In a note to employees afterward, the CEOs said the company’s town hall meeting, scheduled for today, has been moved to June 25, writing, “Given the ongoing speculation regarding potential M&A, we want to be able to speak to you with as much candor and transparency as possible. By moving the date, our hope is to do just that.”
Meanwhile, Paramount shareholder Aspen Sky Trust sent a third letter of opposition to Skydance’s reported agreement to acquire Paramount, claiming it is an “undervalued bid” that benefits Shari Redstone to the detriment of other shareholders. Aspen Sky Trust owns approximately 6.57 million shares of Paramount.
X has updated its policies to officially allow porn on the platform. In a recent update, X said, “We believe that users should be able to create, distribute, and consume material related to sexual themes as long as it is consensually produced and distributed.” X adds it is restricting exposure to adult content for children or adult users who choose not to see it, and prohibiting content promoting exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, sexualization or harm to minors, and obscene behaviors. It also prohibits pornographic content in highly visible places.
New York lawmakers have reached a tentative agreement for legislation aimed at preventing social media companies from serving automated feeds to minors, reports The Wall Street Journal. Companies would be prohibited from using algorithms to steer content to children without parental consent. The bill is expected to be voted on this week.
Sean “Diddy” Combs has sold his stake in media company Revolt. Combs, who is currently facing multiple allegations of sexual assault, co-founded Revolt in 2013. Employees now make up most of the shareholder group. “We are most proud of the transformation that our teams will experience as they shift from being employees to owners of the business they are helping to build,” said CEO Detavio Samuels. “Black culture is global culture, and Revolt’s superpower is being the home for creators that move culture globally, allowing us to build the most powerful storytelling engine for Black voices.”
Linda Fairstein, the prosecutor involved in the Central Park Five Case who sued Netflix and Ava Duvernay over her portrayal in the 2019 docuseries “When They See Us,” has settled her defamation lawsuit. Netflix has agreed to donate $1 million to the Innocence Project, and add this disclaimer to the show: “While the motion picture is inspired by actual events and persons, certain characters, incidents, locations, dialogue, and names are fictionalized for the purposes of dramatization.” Noted Netflix, “Ms. Fairstein will not receive any money as part of this settlement.” |

Pay TV customers watch more FAST than cord-cutters or cord-nevers, according to a new report, 2024 FAST Market Update, from Xumo and FASTMaster Consulting. Forty-seven percent of consumers that subscribe to a pay-TV service say they also regularly watch FAST, while 46% of cord-cutters report being regular viewers of FAST, and 35% of cord-nevers report doing so. The study notes that FAST viewers trend younger and more diverse. While 46% of the US adult population is between the ages of 18 and 44, 58% of FAST viewers fall within that range. Additionally, Black viewers represent 20% of FAST’s audience, compared to 14% of the U.S. population, and 23% viewers have Latino origins, compared to 19% nationally. “The findings of this report underscore the increasingly important role FAST plays in today’s entertainment landscape, dispelling myths and highlighting the diverse, engaged, and growing audience that finds value in our free and easy streaming,” said Stefan Van Engen, VP, Content Programming and Partnerships, Xumo.
More than half of smart TV viewers never accessed content via cable, satellite or over-the-air antenna last quarter, according to Inscape Market Trends Q1 2024, and nearly a quarter of live linear viewing time was streamed. Thirty-eight percent of smart TV viewers accessed content from both streaming video and linear television, down from 46&% in the first quarter of 2022. The share of time spent with streaming among households has flattened – in 1Q24, streaming accounted for 57% of time spent compared to 58% in the prior quarter. But while streaming was the predominant source of overall US TV viewing, cable/satellite/OTA still took the big wins for sports (72.3%) and news viewing (79.9%) in the quarter. For March Madness specifically, 72.7% of viewing time occurred on cable/satellite/OTA for the NCAA women’s basketball tournament, and 68.6% for the men’s.
Lionsgate’s MovieSphere will be the first major FAST channel to be measured by Nielsen. “By bringing proven linear TV metrics to the FAST space, Nielsen is providing us with a valuable and innovative tool to benchmark performance, evaluate what’s working and respond quickly to our audiences,” said Lionsgate President of Worldwide Television Distribution Jim Packer. “This is potentially a very significant development where our team can leverage viewer reach, duration, frequency, concentration and other audience indicators to help us shape our branded, general entertainment channels to better return value for our partners.”
Netflix is adding 14 new video games to its slate, including Lord of the Rings game “Tales of the Shire,” which will be a mobile title exclusive to Netflix subscribers. “We’re building a games portfolio meant to offer something to every one of our members, no matter your taste or mood,” wrote the company in a blog post.
Max has raised the prices its ad-free monthly and yearly plans. The monthly Ad-Free plan will increase by $1 per month, making the new price $16.99/month and the monthly Ultimate Ad-Free plan will increase $1 per month, to $20.99/month.

Viant Technology is expanding its sustainability program Adtricity with the Supply Decarbonization Initiative, which ensures that ad campaigns executed through Viant’s demand-side platform DSP are powered by 100% renewable energy. The initiative extends to Viant’s entire programmatic supply chain, including supply-side platform (SSP) and publisher emissions, with the goal of making the digital advertising supply chain carbon-neutral. Now, ads delivered through Viant will have a green leaf icon, and consumers can hover over the leaf icon to see the total amount of carbon emissions offset.
Retail media ad spend will expand to more than $153 million this year, according to a new forecast from Ascential plc’s WARC unit. “The continued growth is fueled by advances in off-site targeting as commerce data infuses into non-retail environments,” said WARC.
