IN THE NEWS |
| Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr said Tuesday that he expects Paramount to face little trouble winning regulatory approval for its proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. Speaking to Arjun Kharpal on CNBC, Carr said, “I think this is a good deal, and I think it should get through pretty quickly.” He contrasted Paramount’s bid with an earlier attempt by Netflix, which had reached an agreement to purchase Warner Bros. Discovery’s studio and streaming assets before stepping aside when Paramount submitted what was viewed as a stronger offer. Carr said Netflix would have faced “a very difficult path” to approval because the proposal “raised a lot of competition concerns.” Paramount has pledged a $7 billion breakup fee if the transaction fails to secure regulatory clearance.
Comcast spinoff Versant released its first earnings report Tuesday. The company reported full-year revenue of $6.6 billion, down 5% from the year prior. Linear distribution revenue slipped 5.4% to $4.1 billion, while advertising revenue declined 9% to $1.58 billion. But it appears the future is digital. Non-pay TV revenue reached 19% of total revenue in 2025 as the company shifts its business model, with $826 million in platforms revenue. Versant is looking to increase that share of revenue to 33% in the next three to five years, with the goal of getting “closer to 50%,” said CEO Mark Lazarus during the company’s earnings call.
How much does college sports drive streaming subscriptions? Nearly 20% of March Madness fans call it a primary factor. |

| “Palm Royale” has been canceled by Apple TV after two seasons. The 1960s-set dramedy starred Kristen Wiig as a social climber in Palm Beach, Florida.
“Destination X,” on the other hand, has been renewed for a second season. The NBC reality competition hosted by Jeffrey Dean Morgan (“The Walking Dead”) sends contestants on a road trip, where they must determine their undisclosed location.
Also renewed for season two is Netflix’s reboot of “Little House on the Prairie,” ahead of the series launch on July 9. Like the 1974-83 original, the family drama is based on the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
Apple TV is now part of the premium subscription lineup offered through the Roku Channel. Gil Fuchsberg, President of Subscriptions, Partnerships & Corporate Development at Roku, described the agreement as “a win for all – our viewers, our platform experience, and our partners at Apple,” noting that partnerships like this help boost engagement and content discovery. |
