Trian has nominated activist investor Nelson Peltz and former Disney CFO James A. Rasulo for Disney’s board of directors, following up on a move announced in December. “Disney needs to again be the beacon of strategic clarity and exceptional execution it once was,” said Peltz. “No Disney shareholder should be content with the current strategic muddle or have to endure failed execution without accountability.” That comment followed Disney’s release of a preliminary proxy filing on January 16 that noted, “In a two year quest for a seat on the Disney Board, Mr. Peltz had not actually presented a single strategic idea for Disney,” adding that his assessment of Disney “seemed oblivious to the ongoing secular change in the media industry.”

While Gen Zers report spending most of their time with social media, short videos, streaming music, and video games, a study from Horowitz Research reports the demo is still heavily engaged with professional, full-length TV content. “FOCUS Generation Next” found that Gen Z audiences are almost as likely to be viewers of professionally produced TV content as they are non-TV content. More than half of Gen Zers say they typically watch professionally produced, long-form TV content on their TV sets, while over a third say they typically consume TV content on their smartphones. The smartphone is the device most typically used among 65% of Gen Zers to watch non-TV content.

“Gen Z are most certainly engaged in long-form content almost as much as they are in short-form. What is interesting to us is thinking about how they might bring their short-form behaviors to the big screen and to their expectations when viewing long-form content and what that might mean from a content development, user experience, and revenue perspective,” said Adriana Waterston, EVP and Insights & Strategy Lead for Horowitz Research. “Moreover, now that the writers’ and actors’ strikes are over, we are excited to see how these younger audiences will take to some of the new content on the horizon, much of which is designed to appeal to them.”

Warner Bros. Discovery is the first media company to announce its upfront plans. The company is hosting its sales presentation on Wednesday, May 15 at 10a at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. “Our groundbreaking technology provides standout, industry-leading opportunities to connect our clients with the tens of millions of valuable viewers who watch, stream and engage with our content daily,” said Jon Steinlauf, WBD’s Chief US Advertising Sales Officer. “At this year’s Upfront presentation, we are incredibly excited to showcase our innovative advanced advertising solutions, as well as the Max streaming portfolio, which places brands alongside our award-winning series, films, live sports and breaking news.”

Sports is likely to be a hot topic at the WBD event, starting with the rebrand of its US sports division, WBD Sports, to TNT Sports. Sports programming airing across TNT, TBS, truTV and Max is now TNT Sports, in a division which will continue to be headed by TNT Sports Chair & CEO Luis Silberwasser. TNT Sports holds significant broadcasting rights for leagues including the NBA, NHL, MLB, and March Madness.

Apple TV+ has canceled “Schmigadoon!” after two seasons. Series co-creator Cinco Paul took to Instagram to say season three, including 25 new songs, had already been written, “but unfortunately we won’t be making it. Such is life.”

Also canceled after season two is Max’s Issa Rae comedy “Rap Sh!t.” “We are extremely grateful to Issa Rae for creating ‘Rap Sh!t,’ a one-of-a-kind comedy with compelling social commentary that reached viewers in a way only Issa’s talents can accomplish,” said a Max spokesperson.

Disney Branded Television has ordered a pilot for a sequel to Disney’s 2007-12 series, “Wizards of Waverly Place.” The original series’ stars, Selena Gomez and David Guthrie, are executive producing. Gomez will guest on the pilot and Guthrie is onboard as a series regular.

It took four years, but Netflix hip-hop competition series “Rhythm + Flow” is returning for season two later this year. New judges include DJ Khaled, Ludacris and Latto, with Eminem as a special guest.

UK’s Spun Gold TV is moving to a new headquarters in Birmingham. MD Daniela Neumann will manage Spun Gold’s shows from its new production office in Digbeth, which will also eventually house edit and post production facilities. In addition to BBC Daytime format “Garden Rescue,” the company is also in production on two reality and entertainment format series for US networks.

FilmRise and Viral Nation have entered into a distribution partnership that will expand the FilmRise Creator Partner Program, adding 10 creators. Participating Viral Nation creators will provide FilmRise with exclusive worldwide rights to their libraries. FilmRise’s CPP will curate and re-package videos for worldwide distribution as broadcast-ready television episodes. The deal includes exclusive rights in all digital media, FAST, television, non-theatrical, airline and ancillary rights.

The Barracks announced the launch of a new agency venture, aimed at connecting brands and agencies with the military community through consulting, marketing, sponsorship, and event services. “The military community is one of the largest American consumer segments but most brands do not have a military segmentation strategy. We’re here to bridge the gap in understanding how to effectively reach military and veterans in a way that resonates and connects back to the consumer brand,” said Matt Gafford, founder of The Barracks.

Reality series “Bold & Bougie” premieres Thursday, February 15 at 9p on WE tv. Featured are Malaysia Pargo, entrepreneur and mother of three; Tameka Foster, wardrobe stylist to Hollywood’s elite; Gocha Hawkins, a restaurateur, mother of two and a grandmother of four; Princess Banton-Lofters, talent scout, television producer, and mother; and Crystal Smith, restaurant owner and single mother of three ready to reclaim her power following a public divorce from a famous ex.

“Kings from Queens: The RUN DMC Story” chronicles the forefathers of hip hop, starting Thursday, February 1 on Peacock.

Even in Hawaii, not everywhere is paradise. HGTV’s “Renovation Aloha” follows the transformation of dilapidated properties on the island of O’ahu into beautiful homes. The series debuts Tuesday, February 20 at 9p.

Dulé Hill (“The West Wing”) and director Danny Lee (“Who Is Stan Smith?”) take audiences on a road trip to explore the transformative power of the arts, in PBS’ “The Express Way With Dulé Hill,” premiering Tuesday, April 23 at 9p (check local listings).

CNN Anchor and Chief Washington Correspondent Jake Tapper investigates some of the most outrageous political controversies of the modern era in “United States of Scandal With Jake Tapper,” kicking off with a special two-episode premiere on Sunday, February 18 at 9p.

NewsNation is launching a Sunday public affairs program, “The Hill Sunday with Chris Stirewalt,” on March 3 at 10a. The show will feature a variety of politicians and newsmakers discussing the latest political news.

“TMZ Investigates” debuts Monday, January 22 at 9p on Fox. In the series premiere, TMZ explores the growing danger of celebrity stalking.

STREAMING

“Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning” starts streaming Thursday, January 25 on Paramount+. The Paramount Pictures production was released in US theaters on July 12.

Collector car auction Barrett-Jackson has partnered with Endeavor Streaming to introduce an enhanced streaming service for its events. Launching ahead of Barrett-Jackson’s flagship Scottsdale Auction, the platform will enable automobile enthusiasts to stream 150+ hours of live auctions every year, including exclusive live coverage of the Scottsdale Auction on Monday January 22 and Sunday January 28.

IAB Tech Lab shared its 2024 roadmap, addressing pain points and challenges in evolving digital advertising standards. “The digital advertising industry is standing on the precipice of profound change,” said Anthony Katsur, CEO of IAB Tech Lab. “The specifications we’ve outlined don’t just reflect anticipated shifts – they’re a clarion call for industry adaptation and resilience. Lotame announced its adoption of Unified ID 2.0 technology to help enhance cross-channel data interoperability, addressing the challenge posed by the deprecation of third-party cookies. The partnership extends Lotame’s data capabilities to include audience activation across authenticated ad inventory. “Interoperability with Unified ID 2.0 is a game-changer,” said Eli Heath, Head of Identity at Lotame. “This integration complements our holistic approach to addressability across both authenticated and non-authenticated environments with our Panorama ID, and positions us uniquely for scaled audience activations across all channels.”

ROI in CTV advertising significantly outshines that of linear TV with a combined 70% of advertising experiencing a “much better” or “slightly better” ROI, according to Teads’ “Tech Themes 2024: 5 Key Media Topics Shaping the Industry.” Other findings include:
· CTV’s incrementality with mobile advertising exemplifies the power of an omnichannel strategy, with a 67% increase in unaided brand recall attributed to a combined approach
· In the wake of a post-cookie era, only 16% of advertisers feel fully prepared for the cookieless shift and 14% of publishers have crafted an action plan, with concerns regarding data accuracy and reliability the main reasons for holding back
· “‘Brandformance,” a fusion of brand building and performance marketing, is altering the playbook for agencies and marketers with 74% of marketing executives planning to increase their budget allocation in the next year

YouTube is eliminating about 100 positions in a restructuring of its content teams. According to tubefilter, YouTube will bring its creator management teams together under dedicated central leadership in each country.

Andrew McCarthy reunites with Brat Pack alums for a documentary headed to Hulu. “The Brat Pack has cast a long shadow over my life and career,” said McCarthy. “After all these years, I was curious to see how it had affected my fellow Brat Pack members. What I found was surprising — and liberating.” “Brats” is produced by Neon and Network Entertainment for ABC News Studios.

IFC is celebrating Dolly Parton’s birthday today with a Dolly Parton Birthday Marathon, starting at 1p and running through early Saturday morning. The event will include Parton films “Steel Magnolias,” “Nine to Five” and “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” along with a “Dolly wisdom” interstitials that will run during commercial breaks and feature memorable lines like, “If you don’t like the road you’re walking, start paving a new one.”

Let’s Make a Deal Primetime” returns Wednesday, January 24, at 9p on CBS, with a special episode honoring the 60th broadcast anniversary of the show. Up for grabs will be over $600,000 in prizes. The show also pays tribute to its original stars – host and creator Monty Hall and model Carol Merrill – with an antique living room setup from the ‘60s and classic clips.

A&E will premiere two-night documentary event “James Brown: Say It Loud,” executive produced by Mick Jagger, Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson, Tariq ‘Black Thought’ Trotter, Peter Afterman, David Blackman, Victoria Pearman, Bruce Resnikoff, Shawn Gee, Zarah Zohlman, Charlie Cohen, and Mari Keiko Gonzalez, on Monday, February 19 and Tuesday, February 20 at 8p. The documentary examines Brown’s legacy through exclusive interviews, never-before-seen archival footage and his music catalog.

Family Entertainment Television will celebrate the 35th anniversary of the debut of “Lonesome Dove” this February across FETV and FMC. The four-part Western miniseries starring Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, Diane Lane, and Danny Glover will air Saturday nights at 8p on FETV and February 5-8 at 8p on FMC.

“Armenia, My Home,” offering a visual journey through Armenia, premieres Friday, February 23 on PBS (check local listings). From filmmaker Andrew Goldberg, the show is narrated by Andrea Martin (“Only Murders in the Building”).

SPORTS ROUNDUP

The Super Bowl has set its pre-game lineup. Reba McIntire will sing the national anthem, Post Malone is performing “America the Beautiful,” and Audra Day tackles “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Usher was previously announced as the half-show headliner for the big game, airing February 11 on CBS.

FOX Sports has signed World Series champion Adam Wainwright to its lineup with a multi-year deal beginning this season. “I’m excited to join the FOX Sports family,” said Wainwright. “I love the game of baseball, and I really enjoy talking about the chess match that goes on between the pitcher and the hitter. Hopefully, my experience on the field will allow me the opportunity to share the game I love in a unique and deep way, bringing viewers closer to the game.”

Telemundo is opening the US Men’s National Team’s 2024 soccer schedule with a friendly against Slovenia on Saturday, January 20 in San Antonio, TX. Coverage of the USA’s first match this year begins at 3p on Telemundo, Universo and Peacock. Telemundo Deportes’ commentary team will lead the coverage.

Magnifi by VideoVerse, an AI-driven video technology company and video editing SaaS platform, has been selected by Club de Futbol Monterrey Rayodos, a professional soccer club based in Mexico, as their video editing solutions provider. Magnifi’s platform will produce highlights of matches.

The National Hockey League’s transformation of the City of Toronto for 2024 NHL® All-Star Weekend festivities will include hosting the 2024 Hyundai NHL Fan Fair, a four-day family-friendly fan festival at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre South Building from February 1-4. Bavaria Fiction is currently filming a 60-minute documentary about Akiva Weingarten for 3sat, showing his journey from an ultra-Orthodox community in New York to a new life as a liberal rabbi in Germany. “Ultra-Orthodox: Rabbi Akiva’s Journey to Freedom” (w/t) is executive produced by Emanuel Rotstein together with Leon Spanier. Rotstein is also the director and author of the film, which will be broadcast on March 6 at 9:45p on 3sat and will be available in advance from February 28 in the 3satMediathek.

“Bing,” produced by Acamar Films, has now been streamed over one billion times on BBC iPlayer. In addition to the milestone, the animated kids’ show has been picked up by The BBC, Rai, France Télévisions and NPO as well as partners in Australia and Malaysia.

European distributor Global Screen has acquired worldwide distribution rights (excluding German speaking territories) for four-part documentary “Jan Ullrich – The Hunted,” which is available on Prime Video in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Woodcut Media is currently in production on “Titanic in Colour,” a docuseries that has presold to C4 (UK) and SBS (Australia). The show includes interviews with relatives of the passengers on the doomed ship.

Lifetime’s “The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard” has reached 9.8 million viewers across linear and digital platforms. The four-part series debuted on January 5, and averaged 1.1 million viewers per night, according to Nielsen.

The premiere of CBS late-night show “After Midnight” drew an average 686,000 viewers, according to Nielsen fast national numbers. That’s up 31% for the time period after “The Late Late Show” went off the air, but down from that show’s final season average of 806,000.

OutKick finished 2023 with a monthly average of 7.2 million total multiplatform unique visitors, up 65% versus 2022, according to Comscore. The platform saw increases across all categories in the fourth quarter of 2023 versus 3Q 2023 with 73 million total multiplatform views (up 15%), 73 million total multiplatform minutes (up 9%), and 6.1 million total multiplatform unique visitors (up 7%).
