GroupM announced the launch of the GroupM Ad Innovation Accelerator, aimed at redefining engagement between advertisers and audiences. Onboard at launch are BrightLine, Disney, KERV, NBCUniversal, Roku, Telly, and YouTube. The working group will strategize and create scalable ad formats for ad-supported streaming environments. “We have to craft a future of our industry where engagement, innovation, and outcomes converge,” said Andrew Meaden, Global Head of Investment, GroupM. “As we shape the next era of media where advertising works better for people, it is critical we continue to innovate new advertising experiences with our partners around the world to ensure brands are meeting audiences where they are. With more ad-supported options emerging, advertisers must respect audiences’ preferences and use cutting-edge technology to deliver more personalized content.” The program will roll out in North America for GroupM clients at Mindshare, Wavemaker and EssenceMediacom.
YouTube has become the fourth-largest pay TV provider of any kind, reports MoffettNathanson Research, having grown 35% year-over-year. And projections have YouTube surpassing DirecTV’s satellite business (now 8.13 million) by early next year to become the third-biggest pay TV provider overall. As of 3Q23, the number one and two video distributors were Comcast Corp. (14.5 million) and Charter Communications (14.4 million).
The Television Academy reversed its decision to exclude Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series from the live Primetime Emmys telecast. The Academy had previously announced plans to present the award at the Creative Arts Emmys, but was faced with objections from the WGA, late-night stars, and the possibility of additional payments for clips.
Disney is being sued by an employee who claims the company concealed a pattern of sexual misconduct by Neal Gonzalez, former VP, Distribution. “Women were discouraged to come forward about his behaviors because management seemingly accepted Gonzales’ conduct as being part of the entertainment industry and his firing would hurt the company financially,” alleges the suit. Gonzalez left the company in 2022 after three other women accused him of sexual harassment. |

Sinclair Broadcast Group announced network distribution agreements with CBS Television Stations to add Sinclair’s free over-the-air national diginets Comet, Charge!, TBD and The Nest to additional CBS affiliates beginning this week. “We are thrilled to announce the expansion of our networks’ distribution and the strengthening of our impactful partnership with CBS, showcasing our commitment to delivering compelling content to a broader audience across the US,” said Lee Schlazer, Sinclair SVP, Distribution.
Tegna and NBC on struck multi-year deal that renews station affiliation agreements for 20 Tegna markets nationwide, including 10 of the top 25 markets for NBC. “As the largest NBC affiliate group among independent station groups, we are proud of our longstanding partnership that enables us to serve local communities,” said Dave Lougee, President/CEO, Tegna. “This new multi-year agreement allows our stations to continue providing consumers and advertisers with premium network content such as ‘Today,’ ‘Sunday Night Football’ and this summer’s Paris Olympic Games.”
Nexstar Media Group and Fubo have reached a new multi-year distribution agreement covering 89 Nexstar-owned local TV stations affiliated with The CW Network, MyNetworkTV, ABC, and independents, including 37 CW Network affiliates, 25 MyNetworkTV affiliates, 23 ABC affiliates, and four independent television stations. The agreement also extends Fubo’s carriage of NewsNation. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The ad-supported version of Disney+ is now available in all Spectrum TV Select packages no additional cost. As part of companies’ new distribution agreement, Charter video customers can immediately begin streaming entertainment from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Stars Wars and National Geographic, including movies, TV shows and original programs through the Xumo Stream Box or any other Disney+ supported device.

RedBird IMI, a joint venture between RedBird Capital Partners and International Media Investments, has taken a stake in production company Media Res (“The Morning Show,” “Pachinko”). Media Res was founded by CEO Michael Ellenberg, former head of drama for HBO. “It’s been thrilling to watch Michael’s ability to bring together the most creative minds in the business and develop innovative, commercially successful series for the new viewing landscape,” said RedBird IMI head Jeff Zucker. “Media Res was a natural partnership for us as we continue to expand our presence across all forms of scripted, unscripted and children’s entertainment as well as news and information.”
Added to the cast of MGM+ crime thriller “Hotel Cocaine” as series regulars are Tania Watson (“The Head”), Corina Bradley (“Star-Crossed Romance”), and Laura Gordon (“Late Night with the Devil”), joining the previously announced Danny Pino (“Mayans M.C.”), Michael Chiklis (“The Shield”), Mark Feuerstein (“Power”), and Yul Vazquez (“Severance”). Tiger Aspect Kids & Family’s “Mr Bean: The Animated Series” has been commissioned for a fourth run, in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery and ITVX. Executive produced and voiced by Rowan Atkinson, season 4 will comprise 52 episodes and air on Cartoonito and HBO Max across EMEA, on WBD’s kids’ channels and streaming services across Southeast Asia and South Asia, and on ITVX Kids in the UK and Eire.

Nearly two-thirds of consumers say they would choose an ad-supported option if it saves them $4-5 per month on a video subscription, significantly higher than just six months ago, according to Hub’s “TV Advertising: Fact vs. Fiction.” All things being equal, nearly four in ten viewers would choose a streaming service over another if it had a lighter ad load. Most viewers consider ad breaks reasonable if they are one minute or shorter – ninety seconds is the tipping point where most viewers no longer consider a break reasonable, reports Hub.

The YES Network and MSG Networks have formed Gotham Advanced Media and Entertainment (“GAME”), a 50/50 joint venture to capitalize on technical and operational synergies associated with YES’ and MSGN’s streaming services. GAME will also offer digital content distribution services, including platform technology, operational support and data analytics to third parties. “With the launch of GAME, we are excited to develop new product offerings, and premium features and functionality, to serve audiences like never before, while also providing a scalable tech solution for third-party content owners seeking to deliver state-of-the-art streaming experiences to their customers,” said Jon Litner, CEO of the YES Network.
The NCAA and ESPN are teaming for a $920 million, eight-year agreement that gives ESPN exclusive rights to 40 championships, including the Division I women’s basketball tournament. The deal includes 21 women’s and 19 men’s sports.
BLAST struck a multi-year deal and collaboration with Epic Games to run their the Fortnite Championship Series and Rocket League Championship Series, starting in 2024. BLAST will run all operations of competitions, event production, and marketing of the RLCS and FNCS. BLAST will also be responsible for the commercial rights of both games’ competitive broadcasts and events.

The CW Network’s broadcast of the 2023 Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl on Saturday, December 30 delivered more than 1.1 million Total Viewers, according to Nielsen. The CW’s first college bowl game saw viewership peaking at 1.9 million Total Viewers during the final quarter hour.
CNN’s “New Year’s Eve with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen” drew 2.33 million viewers, up 12% from the year prior, and the special’s second largest audience since it launched in 2007. By the time the ball dropped, the audience had swelled to 3.41 million.
