Hulu presented its 2014slate of originals. They include:
- Deadbeat: A supernatural comedy directed by Arrested Development’s Troy Miller, starring Reaper’s Tyler Labine and So You Think You Can Dance’s Cat Deeley. It will launch on April 9 as part of Hulu’s first co-production with Lionsgate Television.
- East Los High: The show is renewed for its second season.
- The Hotwives of Orlando: Hulu has exclusive distribution rights to the reality satire from Paramount Digital Entertainment. Stars include The Office’s Angela Kinsey and Happy Endings’ Casey Wilson.
- The Bridge: Hulu will release the original Scandanavian version of the drama series that was recently adapted into an English version by FX.
- The Next Step: This reality-style dance drama from BBC Worldwide North America was acquired from the BBC.
- Moone Boy: Renewed for a second season, returning in the spring.
- The Awesomes: Seth Meyers and Mike Shoemaker‘s animated show will return for the second season in the spring.
- Rev: The show will return for its third season.
- Look for returning seasons of Fresh Meat, Pramface, Elite New Face, Line of Duty, Moody Family and The Only Was is Essex, exclusively.
… The Yahoo Advertising platform will include digital advertising for native and search advertising. The new native ads can be seen on two new sites, Yahoo Food and Yahoo Tech. Tumblr will also use the platform in sponsored posts, said CEO Marissa Mayer in her keynote…

MTV has launched a TV Everywhere viewing experience on its iOS and Android mobile apps for Teen Wolf, The Real World Explosion and Girl Code. Fans can watch the full episodes of these series from the app on their phone after authenticating with their pay-TV provider. MTV will launch similar full series episodes on sister brands VH1, CMT and Logo TV. MTV’s video-viewing app has been downloaded more than two million times since its launch in June.
IndieFlix, the streaming platform for independent filmmakers and films, will double the number of films released in a Distribution Lab initiative for 2014. The move comes after two of its DL flicks hit number one on iTunes in the documentary category last year. “This started as an experiment,” IndieFlix CEO Scilla Andreen said. “The success of Finding Kind and Living On One Dollar shows us that The Distribution Lab was a great way to drive revenue… and a very effective way to get films in front of the audience they deserve.” The next release is The Empowerment Project: Ordinary Women Doing Extraordinary Things, due this spring.
Frederator Studios‘ Cartoon Hangover YouTube channel has passed the one million-subscriber mark in just over a year since its inception. It also out-performed the first 12-month subscribership of other high-profilers in YouTube‘s funded channel program, which include the likes of Awesomeness TV, Jay z, Geek & Sundry and Sourcefed. The milestone makes Hangover the second-fastest growing channel of the YT-funded group. “At Frederator, we’ve prided ourselves for 20 years in giving tomorrow’s hitmakers –the innovative cartoon creators– a chance to reach a bigger audience than traditional platforms,” Founder Fred Seibert told Cynopsis. “Either that, or I have more relatives than I knew about.”
Adap.TV‘s updated Audience Path platform for advertisers is available for customers. Highlights of the product include integration of Nielsen and comScore’s measurement tools including the Nielsen Online Campaign Ratings and comScore-approved Campaign Essentials app.
The Smart TV Alliance unrolled a one-stop portal to develop and publish Smart TV apps. The new platform simplifies the process of creating apps through a universal code for developers with the Application Developers Agreement and the Premium Developer Support Program (until now, app developers needed a separate contract with each TV manufacturer). Shenzhen TCL New Technology has also joined the alliance; it’s the number one smart TV manufacturer in China.
Cinemax is posting “character Vines” to tease the second season premiere of Banshee. The first Vine was posted on Jan. 7 at Cinemax’s Vine handle. “We shot the Banshee Vines on set with the entire cast, using the app itself,” exec producer Greg Yaitanes tells Cynopsis. “They express the inner thoughts of the characters and will hopefully help engage and excite our viewers.” Season two bows Friday, January 10 at 10p.
MediaMath, the digital marketing company, has appointed co-founder Erich Wassermann as its Global Chief Revenue Officer. Additionally, the company appointed Michael Barrett as a board member. Previously, Barrett was the Global CRO of Yahoo.
John Catalano has joined Digital Media Training as the new Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Catalano was previously Director of Sales at Cox Cross Media.
