Good morning. It’s Monday, January 6, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
After 2013 saw Las Vegas-based MMA promotion World Series of Fighting expand its presence on the screen and around the world, the company is now approaching 2014 with loftier goals. With World Series of Fighting 8 set to run on NBCSN on Jan. 18, the promotion is looking to broaden its visibility, not only in the US, but globally as the company continues to take root. This year will see as many as a dozen telecasts on NBC platforms, with executives telling reporters that two could land on NBC itself.
Cynopsis Sports spoke with company president Ray Sefo about his plans with NBC Sports, lessons learned and its global objectives as the sport continues to grow.
Sefo on 2013: There were so many great moments, but making history and being the first organization to come out on national television on our first show ever with no history behind us was obviously a big highlight for us. We were previously able to talk to NBC and present our case and they were confident enough in what we brought to the table and our ability to do the job so that was the great moment to have happen. 2013 was a great year, and a good learning year as well, but the promotion is like martial arts itself, you continue to learn and you continue to improve on things.
On lessons learned: There is so much that we’ve learned about the whole promotion itself. What’s fortunate about this whole thing, is that I have the know-how of doing things because when I ran my first promotion, it was a two-man team and it wasn’t until the week of the fight that we had staff on board. Back then, I was the event manager, I was the guy who booked flights and hotels, etc. Fast forward to 20 years later, I have a staff that does all that stuff so it allows me to focus on the big-picture things like the networks, the staff, the fighters and negotiations.
On working with NBC Sports: NBC has been amazing for us, they understood our vision and we are very proud and very happy to be partners with them. This year we are looking to do 10-12 shows on NBC Sports Network, so we have a great relationship and it has moved forward in the way that we were hoping it would. We look forward to an even better year in 2014.
On going global: We are looking to go global. We did a show in Vancouver and we are looking to go to Japan, Australia, New Zealand this year. We are finalizing Mexico and Brazil. Obviously all these things puts us out there in the media as we have a network already in New Zealand, we are finalizing a network in Australia and the list goes on. One of the things I’ve said all along is that I want to have a presence within that country and that’s the reason why we have our partners form around the world. Australia and New Zealand are probably going to have about 12 shows, with six in each. Out of those 12 shows, probably four of those shows will be on NBC Sports Network. Our sports will continue to grow for another 20 years because of the vast amount of talent and interest in all of these areas.

More numbers for last week’s 2014 NHL Winter Classic on NBC, which tied as the highest-rated NHL regular-season game in nearly four decades, and became the second-most watched such game in 39 years. The contest, according to Nielsen, was up nearly 20% in both household rating and viewership versus the 2012 NHL Winter Classic, with a 2.5 ratings and 4.404 million viewers, per fast nationals.
Up north, Canadian viewers also made records, with CBC’s broadcast of the Winter Classic delivering a record 3.57 million viewers across the country. That represents the largest audience for an outdoor NHL game on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada as well as the largest audience ever for a non-playoff NHL game in Canadian broadcast history.
Voters for Tuesday’s NBA Fan Night presented by Sprint on NBA TV selected the Pelicans/Heat game for the telecast with the contest starting at 7:30p. NBA Fan Night host Ernie Johnson and analysts Chris Webber and Greg Anthony will offer analysis during the AutoTrader.com Pregame Show starting at 7p.
