NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Legendary TV and Digital Media signed a deal with Ben Stiller’s and Stuart Cornfeld’s Red Hour Films to produce digital and TV programming. Red Hour Films is behind hits like films Zoolander and Tropic Thunder, and digital Emmy-nominated digital series Burning Love, and in the works producing a Zoolander animated series.

A new online TV network, Raw Science, debuted today at www.RawScience.tv. The online network will include science channels on YouTube that already boast 3.5 million subscribers. Raw Science is also partnering with Khan Academy for a series that will feature popular science content creators delivering breaking news and developments.

International Twitter mobile users won’t need internet access, Reuters reports. Twitter is partnering with Singapore-based mobile app provider U2opia so that those without internet access on mobile phones can still view trending topics on Twitter (but not real-time tweets). Google Talk and Facebook both have similar deals with the company.

Facebook announced that it’s changing its News Feed algorithm to better accommodate the high level of posts competing for space in a user’s feed. However, Facebook warned advertisers that this will likely bump out brands out of the feed quicker, so the site advised a combination of “engaging posts and advertising to promote your message.”

CONTENT MEDIA

VEVO released its Top 10 Most Views Music Videos of 2013, and the winners, as of December 1st are:
1.      Wrecking Ball from Miley Cyrus: 371 million views
2.      We Can’t Stop by Miley Cyrus: 295 million views
3.      Scream And Shout by Will.i.am Ft. Britney Spears: 262 million views
4.      Diamonds by Rihanna: 254 million views
5.      Roar by Katy Perry: 237 million views.

Amazon has 11 pilots for new shows ready to roll out on Amazon Instant Video and UK’s LoveFilm in 2014, and casting has just been announced for one of them: Mozart in the Jungle, a behind the scenes peak at the classical music world. The stars include Malcolm McDowell, Gael Garcia Bernal and Bernadette Peters; the comedy is written by Oscar-nominated Roman Coppola, his cousin Jason Schwartzman and Alex Timbers.

Netflix, YouTube’s WIGS channel and The CW’s digital arm CW Seed, all received nominations from The Writers Guild Awards on Friday. Netflix originals House of Cards and Orange is the New Black were both recognized, and it’s the first time OITNB has been recognized by top dogs in the TV industry. The 2014 winners will be announced on Feb. 1 in ceremonies in both Los Angeles and New York City.

The Grammys premiered a new social and digital campaign after the nominees were announced on Friday on The Grammy Nominations Live! Countdown to Music’s Biggest Night. The campaign, integrated on Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, YouTube and Facebook, hopes to hook viewers for the CBS ceremony on January 26th. The New York Times reports the promotion is estimated to be valued at $20 to $30 million.

Sega announced that it’s teaming up with mobile advertising company NativeX, to start advertising in Sega video games, starting with Sonic Dash. The ads will show up between levels or non-gaming times on Apple and Android devices.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

Spotify is planning a free, ad-supported version of its mobile streaming-service, according to the Wall Street Journal. After a year-long negotiation, Access Industries’ Warner Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Vivendi’s Universal Music Group have agreed to license their music for free to Spotify’s mobile users, rather than having them pay a monthly fee. The service is currently free only on desktops and laptops. Spotify has 20 million active users world-wide.

RESEARCH

Netflix is well on its way to gaining the edge on young adult TV subscribers, according to a new study from Statista. Among U.S. subscribers between 18 and 36, 46 percent choose cable and 43 percent choose Netflix. However, among Americans 68 and older, 63 percent are cable subscribers and only 13 percent are Netflix subscribers.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY

It’s time to light the lights! Disney has created a series called Muppisodes to promote its March 2014 film, Muppets Most Wanted. The first three-minute episode was exclusively launched on BuzzFeed last week, and features the Swedish Chef taking on Gordon Ramsey in a food truck cook off.
